MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota, put a national spotlight on systemic racism and social inequities. Just a few weeks later, the state’s unemployment rate for people of color is further hitting home how real and current those issues are.“It’s really shocking that number is the way that it is,” said Kimberly Jones.Jones is an African American woman and was a Minnesota-based flight attendant recruiter, who lost her job in March.According to data from Minnesota’s Department of Employment and Economic Development, she is a part of the half of all Black workers in the state who have lost their jobs and have had to file for unemployment during the past five months. Right now, Black workers in Minnesota are almost three times as likely to still be unemployed, compared to white workers. That’s significantly higher than the national average, which also shows Black workers across the country struggling with unemployment at a higher rate than white workers.“We have been suffering and going through this kind of social inequity for so long,” said Jones. “It is sad to say you almost get used to the norm. I get used to the redlining. I get used to not being able to get a job. I get used to the discrimination. My hope is that with everything that has happened together the way that it has, it will begin to shed light on things that absolutely have to change.”The issue of people of color having disproportionately higher unemployment in Minnesota and around the country is not a new issue or one just isolated to this economic downturn, according to experts like William Rodgers with Rutgers University. Rodgers is the Chief Economist and a Professor of Public Policy at Rutgers’ Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy.“The big concern there that I have is that this is potentially writing the same rules we have seen in previous recessions,” said Rodgers. “African Americans, Latinos, and other groups, but especially African Americans, they are the first ones to be fired and they are the last ones to be hired when there is a recovery.”Given the recent national awareness and concern over systemic inequities for people of color, there is action being taken to change the course of history this time.“Employers need deep help in addressing the institutional racism that exists within their walls and to determine really what kind of actions they can take to really start to create new policies and practices and new ways of being as it relates to how they hire talent,” said Towanna Black.Black is the Founder and CEO of Minnesota’s Center of Economic Inclusion. Her organization recently created several new positions to help private companies and other employers address their role in this inequity and unemployment disparity.“We do an assessment upfront that helps employers understand, almost across 200 dimensions, what is happening inside your business and how those policies and practices either help your employees move forward economically or hold them back,” said Black. “We are glad to say that employers, not only in Minneapolis/St. Paul but across the country are reaching out.”While employers work on change, someone like Jones has changed her mind about returning to the workforce that historically has worked against her and other people of color. She has instead decided to work on a nonprofit passion project, turning her home into a shelter for woman called The Genesis House Service Corporation. 3489

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Buck McCoy is just one of many survivors from Nashville's Christmas explosion. Friday night he stayed at a friend's house but said he's not sure what's left of his Lofts at 160 home."About 5:30 or so I heard some gunshots - it sounded like four or five, maybe six gunshots. I looked out the window and didn't see anything," said McCoy. That's when he went back to bed, a decision he believes saved his life."Within maybe ten minutes of that a huge explosion, which completely ripped the walls apart of my house, stuff was coming down on me, there was dust everywhere," McCoy said.He got out of bed to find his face and hands bleeding from broken glass and debris. "You know I was looking out the window just ten minutes before the whole explosion, so if I had picked that moment where it exploded to be looking out the window, I feel very lucky on this Christmas to be here. It was that close," he said.McCoy managed to capture cell phone video immediately after the blast as people desperately looked for safety. "I was really thinking that there was some kind of a war going on and that this could be something that I wouldn't get through, that I would not make it through," McCoy said.He eventually walked to a friend's house where he has been staying ever since. McCoy said at one point he did go back home to look for his cat but firemen sent him away. MOUNTAIN VIEW (CNS) - A 24-year-old man is today recovering after being shot in Mountain View.The victim was at a party in the 200 block of Southlook Avenue when a car, driven by a female suspect with a male suspect in the passenger seat, pulled up out front just before 9:40 p.m. Saturday.``The male suspect fired one round at the victim and struck him in the lower abdomen,'' said officer Robert Heims of the San Diego PoliceDepartment. ``The victim's mother drove the victim away from the scene and then called the police.''He was taken to a local hospital with non-critical injuries. NASHVILLE, Ind. — A faculty advisor for the yearbook at a high school in Indiana has been suspended without pay for two weeks for a photo caption that referred to a Black student as "Black Guy" instead of the student's name.Brown County Schools Superintendent Dr. Laur Hammack and high school principal Matthew Stark made the announcement in a letter to the district on Friday.The mistaken caption printed in Brown County High School's 2020 yearbook."Our investigation did not identify any students (currently enrolled or graduated) who were involved in the creation of the offensive content," the district's statement read. "We believe the content was created by the faculty advisor for the yearbook; he will no longer serve in that role. Additionally, this same faculty member is being suspended without pay for two weeks."The district did not identify the staff member nor say whether the advisor is also a teacher."Both the family of the student and the former faculty advisor involved have committed to a restorative conference where the harm that was caused is acknowledged, the individual causing the harm is held accountable, and an honest discussion about the harm caused by this inexcusable act is conducted," the district's statement read.The district said that the discussion will and needs to continue."We are having meaningful conversations with students, families, and members of the larger Brown County community to help ensure an incident of this type will never happen again," the district said. "We will continue to keep you informed of our efforts."The caption was in a photo of one of the high school's basketball teams."We remain deeply grateful for the ongoing engagement of the student and family involved in being a collaborative partner in rejecting discrimination of all types and against anyone," the district said in its statement. "We will not [waiver] in our commitment to treating all our students with the respect and dignity they deserve.
