As many NFL fans question the patriotism of kneeling NFL players, the spotlight is now turning to the fans themselves. The Green Bay Packers handed out small American Flags during the Packers-Lions Monday Night Game, as part of the NFL's Salute to Service Military Campaign. "During the National Anthem, everybody was waving (their flags) and singing," Marine veteran Tegan Griffith told WTMJ.  "It made me feel very good."However, by halftime, Griffith says she and her fellow veterans noticed many of the flags were discarded."We started noticing people leaving (flags) on the ground, next to food wrappers and beer cups," Griffith explained.  "We found a couple on the bathroom floor.  The veterans I was with started to get a little upset."After the game, the flags were seen everywhere."It looked like red, white, and blue confetti," described Phil Olson, a season ticker holder.  "People were walking all over them.  It struck me as unpatriotic."After the game, both Olson and Griffith told WTMJ they spotted several fans picking up the extra flags."I'm going to tell the Packers they they shouldn't hand out flags because it's the wrong venue," Olson said. "Every game, the Packers will give out a souvenir with the Packers logo on it.  Everybody takes the (souvenir) home.  But after this game, hardly anybody wanted the American flag."The Packers released a statement on the matter:"We distributed more than 77,000 United States flags as part of the Salute to Service theme of the game. We were particularly pleased with how they contributed to the festive atmosphere of the game, especially during the national anthem. We received a lot of positive feedback. Another Confederate statue came down on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus this week.A crowd of nearly 250 protestors took down the statue known as Silent Sam on the eve of the new school year.According to a school website, the statue was built in 1913 and was put up to commemorate Confederate soldiers from the university, "who died for their beloved Southland" during the Civil War.The removal of the statue comes months after students and some faculty began calling for it to be taken down.As that played out in North Carolina, another monumental change occurred in Oklahoma, as the Tulsa Public Schools, after weeks of debate, voted to rename Robert E. Lee Elementary School.In the past three years, over 100 Confederate monuments have been removed. However, far more remain, and are still being cataloged.  They’re also not just in the south.According to a recent report by the Southern Poverty Law Center, more than 1,700 monuments and namesakes, commemorating the Confederacy remain."The SPLC, of course, does not support destruction of memorials,” says Lecia Brooks, with the SPLC. “We just believe they should be removed from public space to a place where they can be taught about in context-- to a museum, to an archive.”Brooks says the two events this week, both occurring at the very start of the school year, sends a message that the debate is far from over."College admins do themselves a disservice and underplay the students if they think that they’re just going to simply forget about these things at the end of the school year and come back and start a school year anew with the same monuments existing,” Brooks says. “I think it’s wonderful. (AP) — A 30th horse has died at Santa Anita on the last weekend of racing before the Southern California track closes for the season.Mike Marten, a spokesman for the California Horse Racing Board, says a 4-year-old gelding named American Currency was injured Saturday while exercising on the training track and was euthanized.The board had recommended that Santa Anita suspend the current meet following a string of deaths since Dec. 26, but management chose to continue until the last day of the meet on Sunday.Track owner, The Stronach Group, formed a panel to review horses' medical, training and racing history for the final six racing days.But Marten says American Currency wasn't entered to run in any race and thus wasn't subject to review by the panel.The horse is the fourth from the stable of Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer to die at the track. Hollendorfer was banned from Santa Anita following the latest death.The Stronch Group said in a statement that Hollendorfer "is no longer welcome to stable, race or train his horses at any of our facilities."On the recommendation of the special panel, the track's stewards scratched four horses trained by Hollendorfer that were to run Saturday and Sunday. 1244

An invasive bug called the lanternbug is causing several counties in New Jersey to go under quarantine.Officials with the New Jersey Department of Agriculture said the bug is not harmful to animals or humans, but it is potentially harmful to more than 70 plant species, including fruit trees, vegetables, and vines.“We have been working diligently to slow the advance of this bug,” Secretary Douglas Fisher said in a press release. “We are targeting areas where severe infestations have been confirmed, and we also encourage residents to destroy the Spotted Lanternfly if possible when they see it. It will take a combined effort to help keep this pest from spreading.” 678
