An Arizona woman is suing Red Lobster after she says she contracted E. coli from tainted lettuce. She’s the first person in Arizona to file a lawsuit connected to an E. coli outbreak stemming from romaine lettuce from Yuma.In a 17-page lawsuit, a woman named Rosalie Styles claims she was hospitalized with cramps, nausea, blood in her stool, all of it coming after a meal at a Red Lobster in Peoria. According to the lawsuit, Styles ordered a Caesar salad on or around March 23 at Red Lobster off 79th Avenue and Bell Road. Seven days later, doctors told her she tested positive for E. coli. The lawsuit says Styles spent three days in the hospital. She and her attorneys now believe the romaine lettuce she consumed came from Yuma. They also believe Red Lobster is liable for her getting sick. The complaint states that because of the restaurant's actions, Styles "was forced to endure great pain, suffering, and inconvenience and may endure the same in the future."Styles remained hospitalized until April 2 and was allegedly still recovering as of May 2, the date of the complaint.“E. coli is a really serious infection, it can lead to hospitalization, kidney failure, and sometimes death,” said Jessica Rigler with the state Department of Health Services.  In fact, state health officials say 52 percent of the 121 people diagnosed, ended up in the ER during this latest outbreak. Eight people have been diagnosed with the infection in Arizona. One person in California died from their illness.“This is, however, our largest E. coli outbreak since 2006 when we had an outbreak associated with spinach,” said Rigler. More than 200 people were infected that year. “Right now the federal government is conducting a lot of traces back to find out if they can identify exactly where that lettuce was contaminated, was it at the farm, was it in a processing plant,” Rigler said. So far, state health officials say until the all clear is given, don’t take any chances and steer clear of romaine lettuce. “It’s possible we’ll be able to call a close to this outbreak soon, but we need to keep monitoring for the next ten or so days to make sure we don’t identify any additional cases,” said Rigler. “If you don’t know where your romaine lettuce came from, don’t eat it. Once this outbreak is cleared, we will work with the federal government to make the announcement.”Scripps station KNXV in Phoenix reached out to Styles and her attorneys for comment on the suit but have not heard back. Scripps station KNXV in Phoenix also reached out to Red Lobster who provided this statement:“The health and safety of our guests is important to us, which is why we take food safety very seriously. ANCHORAGE, Alaska – President Donald Trump is projected to win the state of Alaska, according to The Associated Press.Winning the state gives Trump three additional electoral votes, bringing him to a total of 217, still far behind Joe Biden.The AP still projects Biden will win the presidency, since he is on track to finish with at least 290 electoral votes. A candidate needs 270 to win.With the contest in Alaska called, the only two states that remain up in the air in the presidential race are Georgia and North Carolina, based on AP projections. Regardless of which way they sway, it likely won’t alter who takes the White House.Along with the presidency being called, the AP also projects that Alaska’s Republican senator, Dan Sullivan, will win reelection to the U.S. Senate.Sullivan's win brings to the GOP to 50 seats in the Senate, while the Democrats have 48. The Senate majority will all come down to who wins the two runoff races in Georgia. Residents in the state will vote on Jan. 5.Additionally, the AP projects Republican Don Young will win reelection to U.S. House in Alaska's at-large congressional district. 1136

An Ohio couple was stunned to find a Nazi symbol on a pizza they picked up from Little Caesars Pizza Saturday night.Jason Laska was running an errand for his wife and picked up a pizza from the Little Caesars in Brook Park.“I walked in. I said, ‘What do you guys have left?’ And they said a pepperoni and a cheese and I said ‘give me the pepperoni,’” Laska said.He told WEWS he paid for the grab-and-go pizza but didn’t look inside the box until he got home, but his wife said she was disgusted to find pepperonis carefully arranged in the shape of a backward swastika. We’re deeply disappointed that this happened, as this conduct is completely against our values,” Jill Proctor said. “We have also reached out to the customer to discuss this personally with him.”Jason Laska said he is stunned someone would have the audacity to create an image like that amid the current civil unrest in America.“These are the kinds of things that are continuing to fuel the hate and the confusion that exists in the country and in the world,” Laska said.He added he was contacted by both Little Caesar Enterprises, Inc. corporate offices and the franchise owner who apologized for an insensitive joke between employees.“Two of the employees kind of were, I guess, egging each other on, or one was egging the other on to play a joke on a third employee that was there,” Laska said. “That was why it was not cut or anything like that. They made it as a joke and it was never intended to go out to a customer, but it did.”The couple hopes the experience will be a teaching lesson for the employees who are allegedly under the age of 18.“What repercussions are they getting from that, just termination?” Misty Laska said, “When they can just go right down the street and find another job?”They told News 5 they chose to share their experience to encourage others to learn the history and hateful symbolism behind the Nazi slogan.“Even in a joking manner it’s absolutely unacceptable,” Jason Laska said.Misty Laska, who was the first to discover the hateful prank, encourages others to speak up when they hear or see people committing racist acts.“We’re trying to get rid of racism. ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. (AP) — Cal Fire alleges that fast food chain In-N-Out was responsible for a 2017 wildfire in rural Arroyo Grande, according to a lawsuit filed in San Luis Obispo Superior Court.The San Luis Obispo Tribune reports that Cal Fire claims the September 2017 wildfire was caused by a tractor mowing grass on In-N-Out property, saying it was covered in “dry annual grasses and scattered brush, which created a receptive bed of flammable vegetation.” The agency also claims the tractor was improperly maintained and the driver allowed the fire to spread.Cal Fire is seeking roughly .2 million from the burger chain to recoup costs.The fire burned about 245 acres (99 hectares) in four days. As daylight fades against Baltimore's Eastern District station, the blue glow of giant monitors begins to fill a corner room.Inside, the screens inform a bold new prediction…police now think they can stop crime before it happens.The room is what the Baltimore Police Department calls its new Strategic Decision Support Center.In addition to one in the Eastern District, there is one in the recently renovated Western; both rooms bringing technology once hubbed at headquarters down to the street level in two of the most historically violent areas of the city.Commissioner Darryl De Sousa says these rooms will go live in June and at full operation will have police working alongside analysts to study the various streams of data from the department.They will combine existing data like CCTV cameras and past crime incidents with new tech like freshly installed license plate readers on squad cars and eventually, gunshot detection through the new ShotSpotter contract.All of it will then pass through a computer algorithm which will predict what crime could happen next and more importantly, where.Simply put, the goal of these rooms to forecast Baltimore's felonies."I am very optimistic,” Commissioner Darryl De Sousa said while showing the room to WMAR 2 News, “I am a very optimistic person period, but this center, it embraces technology and that is one thing that has been missing in the police department for years. "If this technology is the missing piece then it is in Chicago where Baltimore saw where and how it could fit."I am absolutely convinced, if they attack it like we did here in Chicago, they'll see positive results from it," said Superintendent of Chicago Police Eddie Johnson.Johnson swears by what is called predictive policing.WMAR television station traveled to Chicago to see how this policing philosophy works.In early 2017, CPD built rooms like they now have in Baltimore.Since then, Chicago has shown consistent violent crime reduction month after month, results Johnson says they began to see immediately."We didn't expect to see that kind of progress that quickly but we have,” Johnson tells WMAR 2 News, “So every district we have implemented it in, they've had at least somewhere between 22 and 30 percent reductions in gun violence."Those gains are even greater in Englewood on Chicago's south side. District 7 is traditionally the most violent area of this city, not unlike the Eastern and Western Districts of Baltimore and is where the predictive policing philosophy first went online.So far this year the gains CPD is seeing in the neighborhood are impressive: a 55 percent drop in shootings, a 43 percent drop so far in homicides.Commanders on the south side say a lot of it is being in the right place at the right time.It is a deployment strategy made possible by the District 7 Strategic Decision Support Center where a computer algorithm figures in past crime trends and data with real time camera and shooting data for the area; even locations of businesses, roadways and weather are figured in as well. That algorithm along with the aid of analysts spits out hot maps for the next patrol shift.Those maps include red boxes of 500 square foot areas the computer identified as high-risk locations for the upcoming shift.Police Officers are then directed to make sure those boxes get repeated attention while on patrol."All of us have that same philosophy: smarter policing results in fewer victims," said LAPD Deputy Chief Sean Malinowski.Malinowski is the architect of this predictive philosophy and started it in Los Angeles, built it in Chicago and is now on the ground and helping its launch in Baltimore.While the way the data is shared and calculated can be complex, the concept is simple: if crime is defined as its intersection with opportunity, then remove the opportunity.[This whole program is based on the concept that human activity is inherently predictable?] “Yes,” Malinowski answered, “And it is…and if you look at it over time, you can track month to month where the hotspots are and if you animate that you'll see it persists, it persists, it persists. All we're doing in this is try and get out in front of it so that before it happens, we prevent it and we are disrupting these patterns.”And Malinowski says they disrupt it not by flooding neighborhoods with police or mass arrests, but rather simply asking the officers to be visible.The predictive model chooses instead to have meaningful interactions with residents in the zone before the computer's prediction can become a crime."When it is working in its best form, the officers will respond to that. They will spend ten or 15 minutes having some kind of community interaction or investigating something in that area and then the criminal is denied that opportunity to commit the crime in the first place."The proof Chicago says is in its numbers, not just in Englewood, but city wide as predictive policing is now being practiced in more than half of Chicago's 22 police districts and is credited with a near 30 percent drop year over year in each murders and shootings.The early success in Chicago is why former Baltimore Police Commissioner Kevin Davis originally recruited Malinowski and his theory to Baltimore and why Darryl De Sousa is about to implement it.De Sousa visited Chicago and Superintendent Johnson just more than two months before its Baltimore launch."I have also told him, look, the technology that we've implemented, that is one piece of it but it has proven to be successful so they cannot go wrong with trying it out," Johnson said, "Let's face it, each city is different in some ways but crime is crime. So, if it can work in Chicago and L.A. and Baltimore, I am convinced it can work anywhere in the country."De Sousa likes what he sees in Chicago and is happy to be the third major American city to flip the switch on this predictive theory.In Baltimore right now, both district’s rooms are complete but some of the technology like ShotSpotter is a month or so away and analysts are still being trained.Still, for the commissioner, the forecast looks bright."I am very excited about it,” De Sousa said, “I am very encouraged about it and I am gonna remain optimistic."But not everyone in Baltimore share’s the commissioner’s view, the predictive policing theory has it’s critics, especially in a city that is struggling to repair its relationship between police and community."We've been doing different versions of that for decades,” Leaders of a Beautiful Struggle Lawrence Grandpre said, “Having more data to do that is great but for some folks that feels like shifting deck chairs on the titanic."The director of research for the Baltimore grassroots think tank says even new data can still drive old bias."We have a system of policing that has more arrests in poor neighborhoods, more arrests in black neighborhoods and all that data is going to appear on that algorithm and it is just going to look objective that we need to increase policing in black neighborhoods, we've already done that for decades."And that's the concern for Grandpre and so many others in Baltimore.There is a deep seeded distrust between police and community in both the areas of the city where police are beginning this predictive program.It is a fractured relationship Malinowski is fully aware was further stressed by the explosive trial of the Gun Trace Task Force."There is a lot of work to do in re-building the trust but I am optimistic about that,” Malinowski said, “I think as they show success, they will be able to come out and engage and then see the police in a different light. That is what my hope is."He is optimistic because there is a blueprint.On Chicago's south side, traditionally its most violent, CPD says this predictive policing model is working because it has the buy-in from the community.The commander of District 7 made sure his similarly wary residents not only knew about what they were doing, but how they were doing it."Well I brought them in and talked to them about it,” Commander Kenneth Johnson said, “And with a lot of the community residents we actually show what was going on with the room. We have to be open and transparent in order to build.And Baltimore Police say the same is happening here. Commissioner Darryl De Sousa says he is committed to keeping these new tools completely transparent. He says he needs the support from the community in order for this to work."We want the community to know we are not trying to hide anything from them at all,” De Sousa said, “We want to bring them here, we want to bring them into the actual room, the strategic decision support center right here and give them a walking tour so they know exactly what we are gonna do. I am trying to build trust here." 8805
