SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An Animal Planet TV series focusing on the San Diego Zoo and the zoo's Safari Park will premiere Saturday, offering audiences a behind-the-scenes view of the zoo's daily activities."The Zoo: San Diego" will debut with two one-hour episodes titled "Welcome to Our World" and "New Day for an Old Tortoise." SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Health officials Wednesday confirmed the first influenza- related death of the 2019/2020 flu season in San Diego County.The county's Health and Human Services Agency reported that a 74-year- old Chula Vista man died Aug. 15 due to complications from Influenza B. The man, whose name was withheld, also had additional medical issues, according to county health officials.The county tracks flu activity year-round during each flu season, which corresponds with the county's fiscal year from July 1 to June 30. Health officials didn't confirm the first flu death in each of the last two flu seasons until October.RELATED: San Diego County records second case of measles this year"Influenza deaths can occur at any time since influenza circulates throughout the year," said Dr. Dean Sidelinger, the county's interim deputy public health officer. "The elderly, pregnant women and those with underlying medical conditions are at higher risk of developing complications from influenza."Since July 1, health officials have confirmed 106 flu cases throughout the county. At this time in the last two flu seasons, officials had confirmed just 26 cases in 2018 and 114 in 2017. The 2017/2018 flu season resulted in 342 flu-related deaths, the most since the county began tracking flu data nearly 20 years ago.The season's flu vaccine will not be widely available around the county until September, according to local officials. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Just after midnight, a full rail closure between Oceanside and San Diego to accommodate work along the passenger and freight rail line will go into effect and continue until 5 a.m. Monday.The closure will affect four rail services operating on the San Diego segment of the Los Angeles-San Diego-San Luis Obispo Rail Corridor: North County Transit District COASTER, Metrolink, Amtrak and the freight carrier BNSF.On Monday, riders are encouraged to plan for increased travel time as trains could be delayed.Full rail closures are routinely scheduled to advance rail construction and ensure worker safety. During the upcoming closure, construction activities are planned for the Del Mar Bluffs Stabilization project and the Mid-Coast Trolley project.In Del Mar, stabilization work continues on the bluffs. Crews will weld and test tieback anchors along previously placed support columns and pour concrete for retaining wall installation on the upper bluffs near 12th Street. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A Vista man who possessed child pornography and also secretly recorded an underage girl showering at his home via hidden camera was sentenced Friday to seven years in federal prison.Following his release from custody, Jeffrey John Lenhof, 41, will also be on supervised release for 10 years, during which he will be required to comply with conditions that include a prohibition from having contact with minors or accessing the Internet.Lenhof pleaded guilty last year to a receipt of child pornography count, following a law enforcement investigation into suspected child pornography on his computer.Homeland Security Investigations found that from as early as March 2017, child pornography files were made available from his home via a peer-to-peer file-sharing program, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.A search warrant served at his home in April of 2019 resulted in the seizure of three computers, an iPhone and an SD card that contained child pornography or were used to download or view child pornography, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.Investigators also found videos that appeared to have been recorded with hidden cameras in his home and other locations.One video showed a teenage girl, aged 13 or 14, entering the bathroom of his home, undressing and showering, with no indication she is aware of the camera's presence, court documents state. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A wrongful death lawsuit was filed Monday on behalf of the family of a 24-year-old woman who died last fall at the Las Colinas Detention Facility in Santee.Elisa Serna died Nov. 11, 2019, a few days after she was booked into the county jail.Earlier this year, the sheriff's department said Serna died from complications of drug abuse, with a contributing factor of early intrauterine pregnancy.The lawsuit filed in San Diego federal court alleges jail staff were aware of Serna's substance abuse and subsequent withdrawal symptoms, but did not provide her with treatment. Though Serna was fainting, had low blood pressure, was vomiting regularly and displaying odd and incoherent behavior, jail staff "ignored the obvious signs of medical distress" and "failed to provide proper medication as Elisa's condition was worsening," the complaint alleges.Sheriff's officials could not immediately be reached for comment on the suit, which names San Diego County and Sheriff Bill Gore as defendants.Plaintiffs in the suit include Serna's parents, Michael and Paloma Serna; her husband, Brandon Honeycutt, and a minor child referred to as S.H.The sheriff's department has come under fire recently over a spate of deaths among county jail inmates, which were referenced within the complaint.The lawsuit cited news reports indicating the county had the highest jail mortality rate among the state's largest counties, and said prior deaths from inmates suffering from withdrawal symptoms should have made jail staff aware of the potentially fatal consequences of those symptoms.The suit also alleges staff are inadequately trained and in-custody deaths at county jails are not being properly investigated."Even though inmates are dying or suffering catastrophic injuries at an alarming rate at San Diego County jails, the medical and correctional staff whose actions or inactions cause the deaths are not investigated; not informed of their failures; not given further training or remedial instruction; and are not monitored or closely supervised after these adverse events," the lawsuit alleges. 2111
