ULAN BATOR, June 22 (Xinhua) -- Mongolian Prime Minister Sukhbaataryn Batbold said Tuesday Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's visit to Mongolia early June contributed significantly to bilateral relations and cooperation, especially in economic and commercial ties.The high-level meeting mechanism played an important role in developing comprehensive Mongolia-China cooperation, Batbold said in an interview with China's English-language newspaper China Daily.Wen visited Mongolia on June 1-2. The two premiers agreed to strengthen the cooperation in areas including mining, infrastructure, culture and education, and to increase trade volume.As a landlocked country, Mongolia wants to boost the cooperation in logistics and transportation services.Batbold said the two countries had great opportunities to cooperate in developing agriculture and infrastructure, and providing jobs related to manufacturing value-added products.The Mongolian government would continue its open policies and would encourage the development of enterprises with environmentally friendly technologies and social responsibilities, he said.

HANOI, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi made five proposals to the 17th ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) here on Friday to enhance regional security.Firstly, Yang said countries should bear in mind the overall situation and interests when dealing with sensitive regional issues, and always safeguard the regional peace and stability.Secondly, Yang said countries should adopt a new security concept by seeking cooperation instead confrontation, and respecting and taking care of each other's core interest and security.Thirdly, countries should respect each other, strengthen political mutual trust, improve and develop long-term, healthy and stable relations.Fourthly, countries should exercise restraint when disputes arise and settle disputes through peaceful means.Fifthly, countries should make use of multilateral mechanism like Shanghai Cooperation Organization, ASEAN Regional Forum and Six-Party Talks to promote common interest and common security.Yang said on one hand, the situation in Asia-Pacific region is generally stable. On the other hand, the unstable and uncertain factors are increasing.Yang said ARF could serve as a security dialogue platform to push for mutual trust among members. Yang also urged ARF members to strengthen cooperation on non-traditional security issues including anti-terrorism, disaster relief, non-proliferation and maritime security.ARF comprises 27 members including the ten ASEAN member states namely Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, the 10 ASEAN dialogue partners namely Australia, Canada, China, the European Union, India, Japan, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, Russia and the United States, and seven other countries in the Asia and Pacific region namely Bangladesh, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Pakistan, Mongolia, Sri Lanka, Timor-Leste, and Papua New Guinea.

PIRAEUS, Greece, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Two Chinese naval escort warships arrived in Greece's Piraeus Port on Monday, kicking off a five-day visit.The vessels, destroyer Guangzhou and frigate Chaohu, are part of the fifth Chinese naval escort flotilla, which just completed the escort mission in the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters to protect commercial ships from pirate attacks.Chinese Ambassador to Greece Luo Linquan and some 200 Chinese nationals came to the port to welcome the arrival of the two Chinese warships. Waving Chinese and Greek national flags, the enthusiastic Chinese living in Greece greeted the Chinese sailors with cheers.They were excited when allowed to tour one of the ships."We are so excited to have a chance to board a Chinese naval destroyer," Wu Hailong, a Chinese businessman in Athens, said, adding that he and his friends come to Piraeus early in the morning from central Athens to welcome the Chinese navy soldiers.Zhang Buren, a Chinese national from Taiwan who has lived in Athens for more than three decades, said he was very impressed by the elegant demeanor of Chinese navy soldiers. "I feel very much proud as a Chinese and so happy to see China is developing fast."At a welcoming ceremony held at the port, the Chinese ambassador said the Chinese navy has made its effort in fighting piracy. "The Chinese naval escort flotilla has successfully escorted some 20 Greek commercial vessels in the waters near Somalia in the past few years," he said. BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- China's foreign exchange regulator said Thursday it will strengthen monitoring of cross-border capital flows to reduce risk.The regulator will keep a close watch on the economic and financial situation home and abroad this year, the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE) said in its annual report on management of foreign exchange posted on its website.It will also enhance its monitoring of abnormal cross-border capital flows by cracking down on illegal private banks and internet-based speculation in foreign exchange.The SAFE will maintain a prudent approach to managing foreign currency reserves and will continue to improve its diversification strategy.China's balance of payments continue to expand, albeit slowly, despite the impact of the global financial crisis.At the end of 2009, China's foreign exchange reserves hit 2.4 trillion U.S. dollars, a 453 billion U.S. dollar increase from the end of 2008.China had gold reserves of 1,054 tonnes at the end of last year, the fifth largest in the world.Although gold has commodity and monetary properties, the global gold market is relatively small and illiquid, the report noted, adding that because of its volatile price and high cost of holding and trading, gold has limited utility in asset allocation.

NANNING, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has urged that more efforts be implemented to fight floods, while reassuring those residents living in areas ravaged by flooding and inspecting flood damage, during his visit to Wuzhou city of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, which has been plagued by torrential rains.During the two-day visit ending Sunday, Wen checked on water levels and river banks in Wuzhou, and visited households in mountainous areas, urban downtowns and rural areas, pledging the government would use all means to prevent and fight flooding.Further, Wen called on local authorities to closely monitor weather changes and strengthen forecasting and warning systems to ensure an advanced emergency response.Further, more efforts were demanded to prevent damages from floods and landslides, Wen said. He highlighted the importance of relief work in schools, mines, railways and roads, as well as tourism sites.Wen required immediate reports and instant responses on risks of dam and reservoir breaks from local officials. More efforts should be taken to safeguard public safety, he added.Also, more relief funds and materials were needed to ensure food, clothing, accommodations, drinking water and health care are delivered to flood victims, Wen said.As of Sunday morning, mud flows and floods triggered by the intense rainstorms that began in mid-June had left 132 people dead and 86 missing in south China's nine provinces and regions, including Guangxi, Fujian, and Jiangxi, according to the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.More than 10 million people have been affected by severe floods, which has accounted for economic losses of 14.5 billion yuan (2.1 billion U.S. dollars), officials noted.
