A 4-year-old girl was left alone inside a minivan overnight in a Milwaukee tow lot, Public Works Commissioner nominee Jeff Polenske said Tuesday at a news conference. Late Monday night, an impaired female driver was pulled over and arrested for an OWI when the vehicle was towed. Officers removed a 10-month-old child from the vehicle, but neglected to remove a 4-year-old girl from the backseat.Polenske said it wasn't until a tow lot employee heard the young girl crying that the girl was removed. Officials towed the car to the lot on around 12:30 a.m. The child was not discovered until around 8:30 a.m. Upon discovery, the child was checked by fire officials for immediate harm and later transported to the hospital for further review. Data from local meteorologists shows temperatures dipped as low as 19 degrees Monday night while the child was in the car.Milwaukee Public Works is reviewing more on the situation.   976

2020 ends with so many communities in the West looking for a place to begin to rebound after historic wildfires destroyed towns.Virginia Camberos' home survived the fires that destroyed the towns of Talent and Phoenix in southern Oregon in September. She is an advocate with Unite Oregon and is working with many members of the Latino community who lost everything to the flames."I¡¯ll tell you that our community is still in dire straits. The fact that they don¡¯t have a home. The holidays are upon us and we have just helped as many folks as we can giving out 0 gift cards to help them alleviate the struggle of getting shoes for their children, food, all the hygienic supplies that they need," Virginia said.In the weeks leading up to the 2020 Presidential Election, Virginia helped those who lost their homes register to vote. Oregon is a vote by mail state and there was the potential that ballots would be sent to addresses where people no longer lived. She posted signs in English and Spanish around southern Oregon, making sure people knew how to receive their ballot even if they lost everything. Now that the election has passed, the focus stays on not only the recovery from the fires but also the pandemic."I think that one of the things I wanted to convey to you all today is that COVID went out the window for many of the families," Virginia said. "They ended up having to go in and live with their relatives or friends and all that, and we¡¯ve had a surge of cases that have risen here in southern Oregon because of that.¡±We hope folks all across the country are doing their best to help many of these families by giving donations to our organization, which we in turn then give to families so they can pay their rent, buy food, clothes, whatever they need, and that¡¯s some of the things that we continue to do.¡±For more information on Unite Oregon's efforts head to their website here. 1908

(KGTV) ¡ª State wildlife officials are warning people not to feed deer in Northern California to help control the outbreak of a fatal disease in the animals.Department of Fish and Wildlife officials say they have confirmed outbreaks of "adenovirus hemorrhagic disease" in deer across several Northern California counties, including Napa, Santa Clara, Sonoma, Tehama and Yolo counties. The disease is typically fatal to deer and can be spread by animals in close contact with each other. The virus is not known to affect humans, pets, or domestic livestock.Adenovirus hemorrhagic disease, or CdAdV-1, isn't new. In 1993-1994, an outbreak of the virus was reported in black-tailed deer and mule deer in 18 counties. Since that outbreak, the virus has been identified as the cause of sporadic and widespread hemorrhagic disease in deer in California and other western states. The disease causes excessive salivation (drooling or foaming at the mouth), diarrhea, regurgitation, or seizures in infected deer, however, those animals infected are often found dead with obvious symptoms, sometimes near water.Deer fawns are at the greatest risk of the disease, according to CDFW.Officials say feeding deer can cause the animal to gather and spread the virus to each other."Providing attractants for deer ¨C food, salt licks or even water ¨C is against the law for good reason," said Brandon Munk, senior wildlife veterinarian with CDFW¡¯s Wildlife Investigations Laboratory. "Because these artificial attractants can congregate animals and promote the spread of disease, it¡¯s particularly imperative to leave wildlife alone during an outbreak. There is no cure or vaccine for this disease, so our best management strategies right now are to track it carefully, and to take preventative measures to limit the spread."People can help officials track and study the disease by reporting sightings of sick or dead deer. 1909

(KGTV) A same-sex couple says a staffer from a private school in Solana Beach told them to not submit their son¡¯s application.Matthew Bosse and Joe Mosca are looking at middle schools for their 10-year-old son. They say Garrett earns exceptional grades and is as much a musician as he is a lacrosse player so several friends referred them to Santa Fe Christian Schools in Solana Beach.Bosse says during a phone call he told the SFCS staff member that he was married to a man.¡°That¡¯s when she essentially said the values that are taught at the home are the values that are taught at school and we don¡¯t think your family would be a good match,¡± said Bosse. The family regularly attends an Episcopalian church and says they¡¯re a same-sex couple with Christian values.¡°You never expect to encounter such over discrimination,¡± said Mosca, who is also the Deputy Mayor of Encinitas.Since Santa Fe Christian Schools is private and receives no public funding, it does not have to follow state or federal anti-discrimination laws.In a statement to 10News SFCS wrote:"While we do not provide details on matters involving students or prospective students, I can say that our policy is to encourage the family of any student committed to academic excellence and spiritual development to apply. As a matter of practice, we do not attempt to persuade or dissuade prospective families from applying. At the same time, as part of the admissions process, we make clear to prospective applicants that they will be joining a Bible-based community designed to disciple students to embrace biblical truth. This is our mission and our purpose, and a vital component of the SFCS experience.¡±Bossa and Mosca say they have no ill-will towards SFCS, but they are sharing their account in order to start a dialogue. ¡°We hope that they do some introspection,¡± said Bosse, ¡°really, they discriminated against our son.¡± 1901
