A van covered in conservative political bumper stickers parked nearby where a suspect was arrested in connection with a series of package bombs sent to liberal politicians and donors was taken into police custody Friday. The van was plastered with large stickers in support of President Trump. It also included a sticker of Hillary Clinton in a sniper's crosshairs and a "CNN Sucks!" sticker.Police covered the van in a tarp and drove it to a nearby facility. It's unclear if the van belongs to Cesar Sayoc, the man arrested in connection with the package bombs, though it was located in a parking lot of the same auto parts store in which Sayoc was arrested. At least 12 package bombs were sent to liberal politicians and donors this week. None of the bombs exploded and no one was injured.  807

A reason some experts think the U.S. has had trouble containing the virus is because states have managed it differently. Inconsistency has jeopardized safety, according to the National Safety Council.“This pandemic is not finished by a long shot, so that's another reason why we put this report out when we did is because we can learn from this,” said Lorraine Martin, President and CEO of the National Safety Council. The council looked at five areas in how states have addressed the pandemic: Employer guidelines, testing, contact tracing, mental health, and substance use and roadway safety. They say states struggled with communication.“We also found while some states had good intentions, just getting the data to people in a very clear and concise way and making it available at people's fingertips, that also was sometimes a struggle,” said Martin.Testing and contact tracing need work in many areas. The report highlights another issue – overdoses are increasing in 40 states.“We had a good year last year where we started to bring some of that down,” said Martin. “It’s headed in the wrong direction again. We can all understand why there’s a lot of stress, restrictions getting the support that you need but it’s really important that we look at the states that have done this well.”Overall, states were put in three categories: On track, lagging and off-track. Only 12 got the best rating. 1405

A mother is grieving the loss of her teenage son, who was stabbed to death Monday morning in Palm Beach Gardens.Jovanni Sierra celebrated his birthday a day early. First, he and his friends played paintball and then they had pizza. He was about to turn 13. Sierra's mom, Karen Abreu recorded video of him with his friends, singing "Happy Birthday" to him, eating pizza. “I could just see it, that night he was so happy. I never thought in my wildest dream that I would get the news I got yesterday,” Abreu said.Jovanni went over to stay at his friend, Dane Bancroft’s house. They’ve known each other for years. “I had told him, are you sure baby? I want you to come home. I want to sing happy birthday, give you a hug and a kiss for your birthday tomorrow,” she said. “He’s like mom, 'It’s OK. I’m going to have fun, please, I love you,’ and that’s the last words he said to me."Palm Beach Gardens police say Dane’s older brother had his friend, 17-year-old Corey Johnson, over that night too. Johnson told police he waited until everyone was asleep around 4 a.m. to kill Jovanni, Dane and Dane’s mother, Elaine. Johnson was allegedly inspired by his Muslim faith, and violent jihadist videos, which encourage killing non-believers, he told police. Dane and Elaine were hurt. Jovanni was killed in a brutal knife attack. Karen says any rumors her son made fun of Johnson are wrong. “I don’t feel like my son is one to make fun of anybody. He’s always been accepting of everyone. It disgusts me because that’s not my son,” she said. Johnson was there Sunday night, celebrating Jovanni’s birthday. Jovanni had invited him. “We had the table reserved for 12 and Jovanni asked, ‘Mom, can Dane’s brother and friend (Johnson) join us?’ and I was like, ‘OK.’ We only had 12, but that was Jovanni. He always wanted everyone to feel welcome,” she said.  1927

A new campaign is bringing attention to an issue that hasn't been front and center since the pandemic started – missing children.“There has been a lot of awareness, a lot of things have changed, but regarding her case, unfortunately there's nothing,” said Jessica Nu?ez about her missing 15-year-old daughter, Alicia Navarro.Navarro, who has autism, was 14 when she vanished in the middle of the night last September from her home in Glendale, Arizona.Alicia played online games and her mother thinks she was lured away by someone she met online. They had even discussed the dangers in therapy.“And then she wrote me a letter where she sweared to me she was coming back, so that’s what has me very worried, because I know her intention was for her to come back and that’s why I won’t stop looking,” said Nu?ez. “I won’t stop looking until I get answers because it’s been so long.”In a new effort to bring attention to missing children like Alicia Navarro, their pictures will be featured on some gas station pump video screens. Alicia's picture will be up in Arizona. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children is coordinating the effort featuring various different missing children's pictures in the states they disappeared from. Her mother wants people to know she looks young for her age and has a noticeable scar on her right knuckles.“People tend to forget so my goal is to continue sharing her story and having her image out there,” said Nu?ez.There's also a Facebook page, called "Finding Alicia," where you can share her picture. 1557

A third leading candidate COVID-19 vaccine has entered a final stage of human testing in the United States. AstraZeneca announced Monday its potential COVID-19 vaccine has entered final trials in the U.S. to test the effectiveness and safety of the product. The Cambridge, England-based company said the trial will involve up to 30,000 adults from various racial, ethnic and geographic groups. The potential vaccine was invented by the University of Oxford and an associated company, Vaccitech.AstraZeneca said development of the vaccine known as AZD1222 is moving ahead globally with late-stage trials in the U.K., Brazil and South Africa. Further trials are planned in Japan and Russia.“To have just one vaccine enter the final stage of trials eight months after discovering a virus would be a remarkable achievement; to have three at that point with more on the way is extraordinary,” Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said in a statement. Two other vaccine candidates began final testing this summer in tens of thousands of people in the U.S. One was created by the National Institutes of Health and manufactured by Moderna Inc., and the other developed by Pfizer Inc. and Germany’s BioNTech. 1215
