Buried at the core of "Mulan" is the concept of deception. Deceiving others for the perceived greater good, deceiving an overzealous enemy and even deceiving one's self at a steep price.All of them are at play in the long-awaited, oft-disappointing live-action remake.There are some things going for the oft-dull film.Director Niki Caro, who proved adept at inspirational tales with "Whale Rider," "North Country" and "McFarland, USA," has a pulse on the heart of the feminist fable, about a woman who masquerades as a man to protect her family and homeland. The visuals are dynamic, and the casting is note-perfect.Martial arts legends Jet Li, Donnie Yen and Gong Li play significant roles, and the cinematography and choreography often recalls exaggerated, Ang Lee-style theatrics.The core of the film -- that Mulan could convincingly trick her military comrades into thinking she's a man -- falls flat. While Liu Yifei thrives with the athletic ability and emotion needed in the lead role, the makeup department did her no favors. She looks more like a supermodel than a rough-hewn male soldier. Scenes in which men assume her gender are unintentionally funny.The new "Mulan" takes a more somber and serious tone than the original, swapping out the Eddie Murphy-voiced comic relief dragon Mushu for a CGI Phoenix, and subduing most musical moments in favor of tense, overly dry brooding.It's been a long and rough wait for superfans. Originally slated for a July 24 release, the movie was bumped to August 21, before landing September 4 on Disney+ as a early access add-on. It will be free on the app December 4, and unless you're a superfan, you're best off waiting until then.At least fans will be able to be mildly disappointed in the comfort of their own homes, and be able to hit pause if they get a little drowsy.There is impressive artistry at work. The film is every bit as gorgeous and sweeping as Disney's best live-action remakes: "The Jungle Book" and "The Lion King."Add this one to the pile of disappointing live-action remakes of Disney classics, along with "Aladdin," "Dumbo," "Alice in Wonderland," "Lady and the Tramp" and "Beauty and the Beast."The movie's legacy may well be what it does for boosting Disney's app and changing the way studios sell movies to the public. CHICAGO, Ill. – Approximately 7 million Americans live with the movement disorder known as essential tremor. Another 1 million have Parkinson’s. But a new incision-less treatment that focuses ultrasound beams onto the brain is providing new hope to patients who suffer from movement disorders.Gary Sindelar, 75, began experiencing tremors in his hands and legs while in his early 60s.“They were kind of scary because I didn't know what it was. I didn't know why my hands were jumping and my fingers were moving, and I didn't want them to,” said Sindelar.The tremors made everyday activities, like eating, increasingly difficult.“I would cut, and I would cut and all of a sudden my hand would jump in and would throw the food right off the plate,” he said. Essential tremor is a neurological disorder that causes involuntary and rhythmic shaking. It can affect almost any part of the body, but the trembling most often occurs in hands, making simple tasks, like drinking water from a glass or tying shoelaces, difficult.“I didn't like you have to explain to my grandchildren all the time. ‘What's the matter with grandpa?’”After years of living with the condition, Sindelar’s doctors at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago determined he was a candidate for a new, non-surgical procedure.“There are some patients who are old or older and the surgical risk is high,” said Dr. Sepehr Sani, associate professor of neurosurgery at Rush University Medical Center. “And so, they choose to accept and a very poor quality of life with tremors.”Neurosurgeons used a mouse and a computer instead of a scalpel. More than 1,000 ultrasound waves coalesce to burn lesions in the brain and stop the tremors. The neurosurgeon is guided by real-time hi-resolution MR imaging.“We can actually see with our own eyes what's happening inside the brain as this is occurring and that allows us to control exactly where and how much of the lesion we make,” said Sani.The innovative treatment is now covered by Medicare in all 50 states.Sani says the new incision-less outpatient procedure could be a revolution in treatment.“Now the patients literally walk into an MRI machine and get the treatment and they can leave within about an hour, hour and a half.”Six weeks after undergoing the procedure, Sindelar’s left hand and leg are more still than they’ve been in more than a decade.“This side, I can hold it steady,” he said.Regaining that steadiness, he says has been life-altering.“I would have said to you that I think I probably had 10 years of life,” said Sindelar. “And I could have 50 years left now.”It’s an emotional reality that could provide hope to countless others. 2667

CAMPO (CNS) - One person was killed today in a traffic crash involving an overturned semi-truck on State Route 94, the CHP said.The fatal crash happened at 12:06 p.m. Saturday when a semi-truck was reported on its side in the right shoulder of SR-94 west of Buckman Springs Road with no other vehicles involved, according to a California Highway Patrol incident log.Caltrans San Diego said all lanes of eastbound and westbound SR-94 were blocked and asked travelers to use an alternate route. The CHP said the freeway would probably be closed for a couple of hours while investigators look into the cause of the crash.No further information was available. 663

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (KGTV) - Marines and Sailors are finding and rendering WWII bombs safe in the Republic of Palau.Back in September of 1944, the U.S. attacked Peleliu, an island in the Pacific Ocean. It was Japan's second line of defense in WWII and a hop away from the Philippines."There was a lot of casualties in the Battle of Peleliu, which is one of the islands here in Palau," First Class Navy Diver Alexander Grun said.About 1,500 U.S. and 11,000 Japanese soldiers died in that battle, but the war is still taking casualties today."One of the Palauans was telling me they were building a house and they accidentally hit one [a bomb] while they were building their house," Grun said.Dozens of bombs were left on the islands only to be discovered decades later, often by accident.The U.S. hand picked about 100 Marines and Sailors, many from Camp Pendleton and 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing in San Diego, for Task Force Koa Moana, which translates to Ocean Warrior.One of the missions of the task force is to find and render those bombs safe."We have robots that are able to search the beach for us now." Grun said they search as deep as 40 feet in the ocean for these bombs.They arrived July 21 and, according to Grun, found six bombs on the beach."We were able to recover three of them, but three were mines, Japanese mines, that we didn't want to mess with. They were too big," Grun said.The team flagged the bombs' location and will come back on future missions with more equipment to recover them. Grun said when they find a bomb, they deactivate it or, "if it's going to detonate, we make sure everyone's away and do a hard pull. If it detonates, it detonates, if not, they go through a whole procedure and render it safe."They hope to protect Palauans and get home safe to their families."I want to say hello to my family out in San Diego in El Cajon," 1st. Lt. Joseph Sporleder, Communications Officer said. He has a brand new baby and wants to tell his wife and children he loves them.Sporleder said the island is rich with history and it has been incredible seeing old tanks, railway embedded in coral and other remnants of the war.Grun also had a message to his family in Santee, "I love you guys and I'll be home soon."According to the Marines' website, the task force will leave Palau in September. 2324
