CHENGDU, May 26 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Wu Bangguo arrived in Chengdu, capital of quake-hit Sichuan province Monday, where he visited a hospital and a distribution center of relief materials.     Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, immediately went to the General Hospital of the Chengdu Military Command Area upon his arrival. "You have created miracles of life. People across the country are thinking of you and hoping you to recover as early as possible. Let's believe no difficulty will stop us once we join hands," he said.     Wu thanked doctors and nurses at the hospital for working day and night to save lives.     He then went to the Chengdu Railway Station, which has become an important distribution center of relief materials from home and abroad.     Wu talked with volunteers working at the station. "Coming from every corner of the country, you are an important force in the quake relief efforts. I hope relief materials could be delivered to thousands of needy people through your hard work."

BEIJING, July 16 (Xinhua) -- As the special guests of Chinese President Hu Jintao, 88 students from the quake-hit areas on Wednesday visited Zhongnanhai, the compound of central authorities, and had a joyous time with grandpa Hu before going to Russia for recuperation.     "I hope all you schoolmates will rest well and recover as soon as possible with the help of Chinese and Russian teachers. I also hope that you will take this rare opportunity to make friends with Russian pals and be the little envoys for our two countries," Hu told the children.     These middle and elementary school students, who come from western China's Sichuan, Gansu and Shaanxi provinces severely stricken by the May 12 earthquake, represent 1,000 children who are going to Russia for further recovery. And it once again proves that we two countries are real good neighbors and friends," said Hu.     The death toll from the May 12 earthquake in Sichuan Province, southwest China, stood at 69,197 as of Wednesday noon, and a total of 18,238 people were still missing.

LHASA, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- At least nine people were killed in a strong earthquake that jolted a county near Lhasa, capital of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, on Monday, the rescue headquarters confirmed early Tuesday morning.     The previous "at least 30" death toll was inaccurate due to unauthoritative sources and needs further check.     Rescuers arrived at Yangyi Village, the worst-hit site in Gedar Township of Damxung County, late Monday night after repairing the road once paralyzed in the 6.6-magnitude tremor.     At least 147 houses in Yangyi and villages in a neighboring county collapsed. Rescuers recovered nine bodies from the debris, and 11 people were seriously injured while eight others received light injuries, Hao Peng, deputy chairman of the autonomous regional government and head of the rescue command, told Xinhua.     More than 600 soldiers, police officers, firefighters, traffic, medical and geological experts were rushing to the quake zone.     Food, drinking water, tents and other materials had been transported to the area. Rescue operation was underway. The injured were being sent to local hospitals.     An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale jolted Damxung,82 km from Lhasa, at 4:30 p.m. Monday. The epicenter was at 29.8 degrees north and 90.3 degrees east.     Tremors were felt in Lhasa, but no major damages were found in buildings or historical sites there, including the famed Potala Palace and the Jokhang Temple.     "We examined every palace and building right after the quake and no damages were found," said Jamba Gesang, head of the management department of the Potala Palace. Then everything returned to normal," Xinhua reporter Xue Wenxian said.     Classes ended early in some schools in Lhasa.     The national seismological network recorded another earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter Scale in the county at 8:10 p.m. Monday. The regional earthquake monitoring network said it had observed 15 aftershocks.     An emergency response scheme was launched across the region soon after the quake broke out. You have been on the frontline to assist quake victims when bearing great pains of losing the beloved. All of us should learn from you."     A day after the quake, Jiang learnt that ten members of her family living in Beichuan county, one of the worst-hit areas, passed away including her only daughter.     She was working as a police officer in the neighboring city Pengzhou.     "I felt that the sky was falling. I can't believe that. I had just talked with my baby girl on phone a day ago," she once recalled the dark moment in an interview.     But Jiang did not leave her post as more and more displaced people came to Pengzhou from quake-hit areas and the police had to help them settle down. In the week following the earthquake, she had worked at temporary shelter camps and barely slept until she fainted on the spot and was sent to hospital.     Jiang has showed the best of Chinese police officers, Zhou said.     He hoped that local police officers and those from other parts of China to assist quake relief would stick to such a noble spirit to work together and well serve their duty in a bid to help create a stable society in the quake-affected areas.     Jiang said she would not fail the Party and people's expectation and work harder in her own post.
