SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - One person was killed in a chain-reaction crash on Interstate 805 in the South Bay that forced lane closures and led to a heavy traffic backup during the Wednesday morning commute.Shortly after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, the California Highway Patrol reported a crash involving a Nissan pickup truck colliding with a Caltrans truck that was working along the side of northbound I-805 near Bonita Road.CHP officials determined that a Toyota Yaris struck the pickup, causing it to slam into the back of the Caltrans truck, which was hauling asphalt.CHECK TRAFFIC CONDITIONS10News learned the Nissan's driver died at the hospital after sustaining injuries from the wreck.Yaris' driver, a 29-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter.No other injuries were reported, and CHP officials said the crash is under investigation.The crash and clean-up led to the closure of at least two lanes on northbound I-805 at Bonita Road. The onramp from Bonita Road to northbound I-805 was also shut down.The closures caused a traffic jam that extended south past Palomar Street in Chula Vista.To alleviate some of the gridlock, the CHP opened the HOV lanes to all vehicles. 1207

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Mostra Coffee, the San Diego-based coffee company that recently won the award for Best Roaster in the U.S., has opened its second brick-and-mortar store.The move is a risk, as many small businesses had to close or scale back during the coronavirus pandemic."Being an entrepreneur, it's just something that you pretty much fight for, and you are you're kind of programmed to just take a leap off the cliff even though you don't know what's happening," said Jelynn Malone, one of Mostra's co-owners.The new location is in 4S Ranch, an area of town that asked Mostra to move in. A petition in 2019 calling for the new location got more than 1,500 signatures."It was something that the community rallied for, and we felt that the community deserved it," said Malone. "So we just piecemeal this thing and slowly worked our way through to the point where we can actually open."But Malone admits it was scary taking that kind of risk during the Pandemic."Being a small business with over 20 employees, including my own family, it was very troubling and scary," she said.The company went through layoffs in the spring, and work on the new location slowed to a crawl. To keep the business going, Mostra built a website and app to allow for curbside pick-up and online ordering.Now that the new 4S Ranch location is open, Malone and her co-owners say the struggle has made their success more enjoyable."I'm so happy we made this decision, and I'm so happy with how the shop turned out. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Owners of sportfishing and diving charters in San Diego expressed their grief and condolences Monday after learning of the deadly boat fire near Santa Cruz Island. John Conniff, the owner of Islander Charters, was at sea guiding a trip when he heard chatter over the radio. "It was in the middle of the night, and I could actually hear it from where I was sleeping, but we could only hear the Coast Guard side of things, at first I heard that there was a fire on a boat," said Conniff. "We couldn't hear the Conception side of the story, but I could hear Coast Guard responding to a serious mayday outside of Santa Barbara."It wasn't until Conniff returned to San Diego that he learned just how devastating the fire was. "My heart goes out to them… my first thought when I heard it on the radio was my own family and then of the families of the 25 people sleeping below decks on our boat," said Conniff. Coniff runs sportfishing and dive trips anywhere from one-and-a-half to five days. He says the whole industry is grieving. Patrick Douglas, with Horizon Charters, posted this message on their Facebook page. "Like many of you in the California dive community we woke up to the devastating news of the Truth Aquatics dive boat fire off Santa Cruz Island last night. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — More than one million of the 1.95 million mail-in ballots sent to San Diego registered voters have been returned, according to the county.The County Registrar of Voters said Friday they've received more than a million mail-in ballots back with four days left until Election Day.The Registrar said at the same time before the 2016 Presidential election, the county had only received 442,802 ballots back.Saturday, the county opened polling locations from Saturday, Oct. 31 through Monday, Nov. 2 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. All locations will be open again on Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.Residents can locate their polling place online here. Voters can also check the back of their sample ballots and voter information pamphlets for assigned polling places.Anyone casting their ballot in person will be required to wear a face covering and to maintain physical distance at polling locations.Poll workers will have a face mask for anyone who forgets to bring on. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Nine drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol during a downtown San Diego checkpoint Friday night.The checkpoint was set up on the 1400 block of G Street between 11 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday.Throughout the course of the night, police checked more than 1,100 vehicles. Nine people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. Another individual was arrested on other criminal charges, police said.“A major component of these checkpoints are the deterrent effects it has on those who might drive drunk or drugged impaired, bringing about more awareness and encouraging everyone to use sober designated drivers,” police said in a news release. 711
