SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A child suffered severe injuries from a pit bull attack Monday in Logan Heights.The child was bitten on Irving Avenue around 2:30 p.m., according to the San Diego Police Department.Paramedics took the child to Rady Children’s Hospital to be treated for head lacerations and a possible puncture to the eye.20-month-old “Ookie” the pit bull was impounded by Animal Control officers. The dog was relinquished for euthanasia by its owner.According to the infant's adult sister, the 2-month-old has a cracked cranium and possibly a punctured eye socket. Witnesses say group was in the backyard when the dog licked then bit the infant's face. The owner of the dog reportedly had to pry the dog's jaw off the baby.  745

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A beloved Poway tradition is facing accusations of animal cruelty and breaking the law.A lawsuit filed this week claims horses were illegally shocked in the 2018 Poway Rodeo to cause them to buck wildly for crowds. Two animal activist groups filed the suit; Showing Animals Respect and Kindness (SHARK) and Animal Protection and Rescue League (APRL).Investigators with SHARK captured video during the 2018 Poway Rodeo, which they say proves an illegal device was used. The video appears to show someone with the rodeo shocking a horse in the holding chute just before releasing them into the rodeo arena.California law outlaws an electric prod or similar device from being used on any animal once the animal is in the holding chute, unless necessary to protect the participants and spectators of the rodeo.The plaintiffs are seeking a temporary restraining order before September's rodeo in hopes to get a court order preventing these devices from used.The animal groups notified the San Diego Humane Society of the alleged abuse, but humane law officers say they got the complaint too late to do a proper investigation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A flying eye hospital is bringing medical care to countries in need. One of the doctors who boarded the Orbis International plane in November is from San Diego.“Orbis International is a unique nonprofit focused on training eye surgeons around the world in advanced techniques of surgery," said Dr. Srini Iyengar, an Encinitas-based Oculoplastic Surgeon who volunteers for Orbis. The ultimate goal is to reduce blindness in countries with inadequate access to care.“In the world, preventable blindness is something that is a big concern, not only for the individual but also populations. Every blind person takes two people out of the workforce, not just them, but also someone who is caring for them," said Dr. Iyengar.The nonprofit just returned from Ghana, where 4 out of 5 people are blind from preventable causes. The plane has an operating room in front and a classroom in the back. “Local doctors, they come to the airplane, and they sit in the front seats and watch on the screen what’s going on in the back, and so they’re watching live surgery being performed," said Dr. Iyengar. The local doctors can then train more eye professionals in their country, helping people long after the plane takes off. Dr. Iyengar says both kids and adults receive care. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A dog was rescued and reunited with his owner after getting into the water off Sunset Cliffs Sunday.The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department said the dog somehow got into the water but could not get back to its owner, prompting two lifeguards to spring into action.The lifeguards helped pull the dog onto a rescue board and brought him safely back to shore.The dog was not hurt.Lifeguards said the area is known to be dangerous for dogs. 460

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A group of good Samaritans is receiving praise after knocking down a brush fire in Carmel Valley on Tuesday afternoon.After spending all day on top of a roof, Ubaldo Lopez and his team at Palomar Solar & Roofing were on their way back to the office."We were going down the hill, and it started to smell," Lopez said. "At first, I thought somebody crashed, but then I saw the fire."Many people slowed down on Carmel Valley Road as the flames crept closer. Others called 911 for help. But before the firefighters arrived, Lopez and his team pulled over and jumped into action."I got the extinguisher and a couple of my buddies here, they got the shovels and started putting dirt on it," Lopez pointed at his team. Right beside him attacking the growing flames were his son Damien and co-workers, Cirinio Rios and Miguel Esteban.Although the men are not trained firefighters, they are familiar with fire. They work on what is called "torch down roofing," a process where a flame is used to melt a rubbery membrane on a flat roof to make it waterproof. So they know the dangers of what could happen if the winds picked up."The weather was crazy and the red flag [warning]," Lopez said. "The fire department, they've been so busy, so you know, that could have gone out of hand."With the help of a few other good Samaritans, the team stopped the fire from spreading. Minutes later, they drove off, without knowing they would be praised for their swift actions all over social media."Omg that would have been really tragic had it spread," one person wrote on Facebook."Wow.
