SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When a series of suspicious fires pop up and arson is suspected, law enforcement officials across California have a handy tool that could help track down or rule out potential suspects.“In California there’s a criminal arson registry put on by the California Department of Justice,” said San Diego Police Sgt. Rick Pechin with the Metro Arson Strike Team. “What that registry does is keep track of all arson registrants in the state of California.”The registry is similar to the Megan’s Law database, but it is not available for the public to access. “It’s a law enforcement computer database only,” said Pechin.RELATED: Video shows arsonist suspected of setting Ocean Beach, Point Loma firesOnce someone is convicted of the crime of arson, they must add their name and address to the registry 14 days after they get out of jail or prison. Offenders can even land themselves on the list even if they slip up just once, like burning a pile of an ex's clothing.“Sometimes it was a onetime mistake they may have made in the heat of the moment and it got them on the list for the rest of their lives,” said Pechin.Pechin and his team of detectives with San Diego’s Metro Arson Strike Team recently used the arson registry after a number of fires erupted across Ocean Beach and Point Loma in September.In the specific case, surveillance video revealed who investigators believed was starting the fires.RELATED: Arson teams investigating five suspicious fires in OB and Point LomaWith the description of the possible suspect, a fairly tall, white man with a thin build, MAST investigators went through the arson registry searching for people known to re-offend in the area.His description helped rule out a number of potential suspects.“It’s just as important as a tool used to exclude someone as it is to include them as a possible suspect,” said Mechin.There are random compliance checks for offenders on the list.“The compliance checks are basically just to make sure they still live in the same location that they gave the local police department when they moved in that area,” said Mechin.If the offender has moved, they must notify local law enforcement of their address change.RELATED: Suspect arrested in Carlsbad dealership arson, charged with insurance fraudPechin said officers have had some problems keeping up with chronic offenders.“If we find out that they are out of compliance we will try to track them down and they can be arrested,” he said.Although the registry helped rule out a number of known arsonists In the Point Loma and Ocean Beach suspicious fires case, a suspect was never arrested.Anyone with information is asked to call San Diego Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477 or the San Diego Metro Arson team at 619-236-6815. 2766

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While the bulk of rainfall has moved out of San Diego County for the week, high winds and surf while persist through the weekend.A large west-northwest swell will bring a high surf advisory to San Diego County through Saturday until 8 p.m., with surf reaching 6 to 10 feet along the county's southern coastline. Surf will subside gradually through the end of the weekend.During that time, however, an increased risk of rip currents will create a hazard along the area's beaches.WEATHER: 10News' weekend forecastHeading into Saturday night, another storm system will bring mostly light to moderate rain Saturday night and the possibility of snow in local mountains.High winds from the west are forecasted for portions of San Diego's mountains and deserts, with a wind advisory will be in effect from 4 p.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday. Wind gusts could reach 55 mph and isolated gusts could hit 65 mph.Those winds will make driving difficult in the area, especially for high profile vehicles. But a former SEAL from San Diego is turning the tables, writing a book about success in business called, “Taking Point: A Navy SEAL’s 10 Fail-Safe Principles For Leading Through Change.” In the book, author Brent Gleeson uses the principles of teamwork he learned in SEAL training and how that culture can lead to success for any growing company. These days you'll find Brent Gleeson in a blazer, on a stage, speaking all over the world to business leaders. But just a few years ago Gleeson’s attire of choice was desert camo, accessorized with the most high-tech equipment as a member of the world's most elite fighting force. However, before his time as a SEAL, Gleeson was in graduate school at SMU in Dallas, he worked in finance, and was an entrepreneur. The blending of those two lives led to this. His newly released book, “Taking Point.”     "It's not your typical SEAL book that gives you some leadership philosophies but actually teaches you how to successfully lead lasting change in any company or organization," said Gleeson.The book contains simple philosophies derived directly from his experience training for and on SEAL combat teams. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two people were hospitalized with serious injuries after their small engine plane crashed near Montgomery Field Airport on Thursday afternoon.The incident was reported around 4:30 p.m. near the executive airport at Kearny Villa Road and Balboa Avenue.According to the San Diego Police Department, a witness said the plane crashed behind a building near the airport and was helping the pilot.The plane had just taken off from the airport when it clipped trees and crash landed in an open space behind the Kyocera business building on Balboa Avenue, said Dan Eddy, Battalion Chief of the San Diego Fire Department Two male passengers were responsive when crews arrived but were transported with major injuries.Police said there was no active fire and no structures or vehicles were damaged.Eddy estimated at least 20 gallons of fuel spilled from the wrecked plane.The plane missed a high voltage area by about 30 feet, said Eddy.No further information was provided at this time. 1004
