SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Chula Vista city officials have placed the controversial statue of explorer Christopher Columbus in storage "out of public safety concerns."City spokeswoman Anne Steinberger said the bronze statue was removed early Friday morning from its platform at Discovery Park in the Rancho Del Rey neighborhood. The Columbus statue has been at the park on 700 Buena Vista Way for nearly three decades, but it has been a frequent target of vandals. Last Columbus Day, the statue was doused with red paint. The city had been hearing arguments for and against the removal of the statue with many people -- including local Native American tribes -- calling the sculpture a symbol of hate, theft of land, and genocide. The debate became heated Feb. 26 when representatives from both sides faced off in a Chula Vista Human Relations Commission meeting. The fiery session prompted Chula Vista police to respond. At the meeting, Chula Vista City Councilman John McCann, with members of the Knights of Columbus standing by his side, called for the statue to be left alone.VIDEO: San Diego man verbally attacked during woman's racist rantThe following night, the committee voted unanimously in favor of a proposal that includes the removal of the statue. The approved a resolution has been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic."Due to restrictions related to coronavirus, there has not been an opportunity to hold a public forum for community dialogue," said Steinberger. "It is expected that the item will be brought forward for further public input and consideration."It's unclear how long the statue will remain in storage or if the city has decided it will remain there permanently. In a statement regarding its removal, City Councilman Steve Padilla said, "Many have asked for its removal, and given all that is happening nationwide regarding America’s legacy of racism, the City decided to put it in storage.""I look forward to an important community conversation about the final fate of the statue, as well as further actions the City can take to ensure that ALL Chula Vistans feel safe and welcome in our community," said Padilla. The city's decision to stow the statue comes amid national-turned-global Black Lives Matter protests against racism and police brutality stemming from the in-custody death of a black man, George Floyd, who died after a Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck as he begged for air.READ: 8 Books To Teach Kids About Racism And Social JusticeIn response to call for racial justice, various cities and institutions have taken steps to eradicate symbols honoring controversial figures including public statues of Confederate soldiers. This last week, Nascar and the U.S. Marine Corps announced a ban on public displays of the Confederate battle flag.Demand for action has even extended to Disney. A petition posted on Change.org asks that company remove all references to its 1946 film "Song of the South" from the water ride Splash Mountain. 2994

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Deadly crashes rose in San Diego in 2018, according to a new report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. According to the report, there were 240 deadly crashes in San Diego County in 2018.In 2017, 223 deadly crashes were reported countywide, the agency said. According to the data, January and July were the deadliest months in 2018, each with 28 fatal crashes. RELATED: San Diego rain could lead to more crashes on wet roadsThe month with the least fatalities was May in 2018. The report didn’t specify why exactly certain months had more deadly crashes than others. The U.S. as a whole, however, saw fewer deadly crashes, showing a 2.4 percent decline from 37,473 in 2017 to 36,560.The agency says 2018 marked the second year in a row of reduced crash fatalities. RELATED: San Diego not the worst US city to drive in, but not the best either“This is encouraging news, but still far too many perished or were injured, and nearly all crashes are preventable, so much more work remains to be done to make America’s roads safer for everyone,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao said. Also promising: the data show that deadly crashes among children 14 and younger declined more than 10 percent while alcohol-impaired driving fatalities decreased 3.6 percent. 1313

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Children's minds cam become overwhelmed during the chaos of a pandemic. However, one local company has found a way to deal with these challenges, especially as kids get ready to start a new school year. Brain Balance of San Diego offers a holistic program that specializes in getting to the root of children's challenges."Those challenges might be academically, socially, or behavioral, says office director Amanda Lee. "We see a lot of parents who come in with children struggling with attention, and sensory processing."And at Brain Balance, they stay away from medications. "That just looks at the tip of the iceberg, and is a band-aid."They believe in the power of exercise, with workouts such as jump rope, balance beam, and planks just to give a few examples."It's fantastic for the brain, but the type of exercise we do here is very intentional. It works on very specific areas of the brain, but especially the connections between the different regions which are connected with development, processing, learning, and every day functioning."Many families are now seeing their kids struggle, as they deal with the pandemic and distance learning. "It's just been difficult," says the father of twin girls going through the Brain Balance program. "It's been nice because Brain Balance has been there, with emails as well as checking in with phone calls. But now having schools start with the distance learning, it's going to be hard to gauge them, but I can see they've gained."So what are the red flags to look for in your children? Lee says there are a few. "Are they able to really focus on the lesson at hand, and what about reading? A lot of kids are really struggling with getting through a paragraph or a sentence."Lee also says Brain Balance is by no means a cure, just a stepping stone to help children with their struggles."We know there are these road blocks in the brain. So we help them clear those road blocks, and to help them truly thrive, especially in the new school year." 2024
