Former President George H.W. Bush will continue to recover in the hospital through the weekend, but he "is in excellent spirits," a family spokesman said Friday.Bush continues to focus on "regaining strength," but the 93-year-old former president "is looking forward to resuming his schedule and going to Maine next month," the spokesman, Jim McGrath, said in a tweet. The 41st president was moved from intensive care to a regular patient room at Houston Methodist Hospital on Wednesday afternoon. He was admitted on Sunday morning after contracting an infection that spread to his blood. Earlier Wednesday, a source close to the Bush family said the 41st president was doing much better, pointing to a tweet from Bush's Twitter account that thanked Houston authorities for their handling of Barbara Bush's funeral as a positive indication of Bush's recovery.Bush's hospitalization came just a day after the funeral of his wife, Barbara Bush. The former first lady passed away last Tuesday at the age of 92. The pair had been married for 73 years. 1054

Former New York Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner is set to be released from prison about three months earlier than initially scheduled, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons website. In May 2017, Weiner pleaded guilty to one charge of transferring obscene material to a minor in federal court in Manhattan. The charges stem from communications that the former congressman had with a 15f-year-old girl on social media sites between January and March 2016."This crime was my rock bottom," Weiner said in court. "I have no excuse. ... I victimized a young person who deserved better."Weiner was a prominent Democratic congressman before he resigned in 2011 following the release of sexually-charged, and sometimes explicit, text messages he exchanged with women other than his wife. During his run for New York City mayor in 2013, more sexually-explicit exchanges with other women were released before he was soundly defeated in that race.Weiner's estranged wife, Huma Abedin, was a top aide to Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. The federal investigation into Weiner ended up playing a critical role in the 2016 election when emails potentially relevant to the FBI's investigation into Clinton's email server?surfaced on Weiner's laptop. Former FBI Director James Comey announced the discovery of the emails less than two weeks before election day, only to conclude two days before the balloting that the emails changed nothing in the investigation. Democrats blame that announcement in part for Clinton's loss.Weiner was sentenced to 21 months in federal prison, and reported to prison November 6, 2017. He is currently located at FMC Devens in Massachusetts. His prison term of 21 months would have ended in August 2019, and this new release date is now set for May 14, 2019, according to the website."This projected release date includes credit for good conduct time earned and good conduct time that may be earned throughout the remainder of his sentence," read a statement from the Bureau of Prisons to CNN. 2048

Following a hand recount of ballots in Georgia, President-elect Joe Biden maintained a 12,000-vote lead over President Donald Trump. The conclusion of the recount means that Biden is the projected winner of the state and its 16 Electoral College votes, according to the Associated Press. The once Republican stronghold, Georgia went for a Democratic presidential candidate for the first time since 1992. With all 50 states now called, Biden is projected to carry 306 Electoral College votes compared to 232 for Trump. The hand recount of nearly 5 million votes stemmed from an audit required by a new state law and wasn’t in response to any suspected problems with the state’s results or an official recount request. The state has until Friday to certify the results that have been certified and submitted by the counties. The recount added an additional 5,262 ballots that had gone previously uncounted, representing roughly .1% of the overall vote total. In the recount, Trump added a net of 496 votes, coming well short of cutting into Biden's lead.Once the results are certified, the losing campaign can request a recount. 1133

For the first time since March, one of the five major team sports leagues in the US welcomed fans into the stands.FC Dallas welcomed nearly 3,000 fans to its 20,000-seat venue on Wednesday. Before the start of the game, the national anthem was played. During the anthem, both Dallas’ and Nashville’s starting lineups knelt as a smattering of fans booed. The teams knelt in support of Black Lives Matter, and in opposition to racial inequality. The on-field protests are akin to the demonstrations by former NFL quarterback Colin Kapernick in 2016.While kneeling during the anthem has become common place in the NBA, the MLS did not have the national anthem performed during its mid-summer tournament in Orlando because no fans were in attendance. The MLS has said that the national anthem will only be performed if there are fans in attendance. As the MLS shifts from playing its games in a “bubble” in Orlando to teams’ home stadiums, some clubs will begin allowing a number of fans inside. One FC Dallas player spoke out, frustrated by the response from fans.“You can’t even have support from your own fans in your own stadium. It’s baffling to me,” FC Dallas’ Reggie Cannon told reporters. “As a team we try to give the best possible product on the field and these last six months have been absolute hell for us. Absolute hell.”But Cannon’s club said it supports the opinions of those who disagree.“FC Dallas supports our players and fans in their right to express themselves in a peaceful manner,” the club said in a statement. “The National Anthem was played before last night's match while the players were on the field which Major League Soccer requires when fans are in attendance. While we understand the decision to stand or kneel for the National Anthem is a polarizing issue, we hope that FC Dallas can be a leader in helping our community accept diverse viewpoints in a respectful way as we all work together in the ongoing fight for racial equality.” 1968

Former President George H.W. Bush will be eulogized by his son, former President George W. Bush, along with a mix of family and friends on Wednesday at the Washington National Cathedral, the most high-profile event in a week of proceedings that will remember the remarkable life of the president who died on Friday at 94.Along with his son, George H.W. Bush will be eulogized by former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, whose time in power overlapped with Bush, former US Sen. Alan Simpson, who became a close friend to Bush, and presidential historian Jon Meacham, the late president's biographer.President Donald Trump will not speak at the funeral, sources with knowledge of the plans tell CNN, but has said that he will attend Wednesday's memorial. Despite the fact that Trump's rise to power included lambasting past presidents, including both Bushes, the President has responded to Bush's death with repeated laudatory comments. The plans for Bush's funeral were all put into place before Trump was ever elected, sources tell CNN. Presidents are traditionally asked to eulogize presidents who have died -- and in past state events like this, that has been the case -- but the Bush family is unlike any other and has another president in the family who will fill that role.Trump will pay a condolence call to the Bush family on Tuesday at Blair House, according to the sources, a government house across the street from the White House.Bush's passing has led to an outpouring of remembrances for the humble and gentlemanly statesman, whose life and service was seen to stand in direct contrast to the vitriol and partisanship that has enveloped elected politics in recent years. Many have also heralded Bush's 73-year marriage to his wife, Barbara Bush, who died months before her husband in April 2018.Those reflections will continue throughout the week, when Bush's casket travels from Houston, Bush's hometown, to Washington, DC to lie in state in the United States Capitol. Trump directed the presidential plane -- called Air Force One when the sitting President is aboard -- to pick up Bush's casket and transport it to Washington."We'll be spending three days of mourning and three days of celebrating a really great man's life," Trump said in Argentina where he was attending the G20 summit. "So, we look forward to doing that, and he certainly deserves it. He really does. He was a very special person."Bush will lie in state until Wednesday morning when his casket will then be transported to the National Cathedral for the first of two funeral services for the former president.Vice President Mike Pence will offer brief remarks Monday at the evening ceremony at the Capitol before the public can visit the president lying in state. It is anticipated that foreign leaders will also be paying condolence calls to the family on Tuesday. On Thursday, Bush's casket will travel back to Houston, where he will be memorialized at St. Martin's Episcopal Church and eulogized by his grandson, Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush, and former Secretary of State James Baker, a man who has been by Bush's side since the former president's failed 1970 Senate campaign in Texas.Members of the family, including children and grandchildren, will be taking part in each service.Bush's Secret Service detail will be with him until he is interred and in the second vehicle in the motorcades that will lead to all the ceremonies.Bush's death has also led to a series of symbolic moments.Bush had come to be known in recent years for his colorful and symbolic use of socks, wearing different pairs to express his mood or mark occasions. Jim McGrath, Bush's spokesman, tweeted on Monday that the 41st President "will be carried to his final rest wearing socks that pay tribute to his lifetime of service, starting as an 18 year-old naval aviator in war."McGrath also tweeted a photo of Sully, Bush's service dog, laying in front of the late President's casket on Sunday night with the caption, "Mission Complete".Sully is named after former airline pilot Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger III, who became famous for landing a damaged passenger jet on the Hudson River and saving all 155 passengers and crew in 2009.Following the week of services, Bush will be laid to rest on his presidential library grounds at Texas A&M University, where his wife and Robin, his daughter who died of leukemia in 1953, are buried. 4425
