BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- China still has a long way to go in upgrading industrial processes, although it had managed to secure economic stabilization and was moving upwards, Zhuang Jian, a senior economist with the Asian Development Bank, said Thursday.     "China has achieved great success in bolstering the economy's growth through a series of plans to stimulate it, but it should also continue making efforts to upgrade its industries, as well as its energy-saving and pollution reduction measures, to sustain development," Zhuang said.     China's economic growth had slowed during the global downturn, but expanded 7.9 percent in the second quarter of 2009 year on year after sinking to 6.1 percent in the first quarter.     Zhuang said the improvement of China's industrial structure and increasing energy conservation were of critical importance to the world.     Government figures show the amount of energy consumed in China to produce a unit of gross domestic product (GDP) dropped 3.35 percent year on year in the first half. The decrease compares with 2.88 percent for the first half of last year.     China should also promote domestic consumption to boost economic growth, he said.

BEIJING, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- The People's Liberation Army (PLA) should study and practice the Scientific Outlook on Development in a practical way, Chinese President Hu Jintao said in an written instruction to the PLA recently.     Hu, also General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), made the instruction as PLA held a meeting here from Wednesday to Friday on its third stage of in-depth study and practice of the Scientific Outlook on Development.     It should be based on the grassroots situation and provide specific guidance; it should give prominence to practice and focus on solving real problems, the instruction said.     It should obtain actual effects and ensure all tasks of the army be completed, the instruction said.     CMC vice-chairmen Guo Boxiong and Xu Caihong and other senior military officials attended the meeting.

BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- China honored a common officer, who devoted himself to his work as a file clerk at the military archives, at a ceremony held here Sunday.     Liu Yiquan had worked as a clerk and then a consultant at the archives of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) for about 38 years. He had processed more than 830,000 pieces of military archives. BEIJING, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- Sirens wailed in a number of Chinese cities Friday to remind people of the Sept. 18 invasion and occupation by Japanese troops in 1931.     "We should not forget the past. The history tells us that we will be beaten if we are week," said Yang Jianhua, a 56-year-old worker who beat the bell at the 9.18 History Museum.     Dozens of cities across China including Harbin, Changchun and Xi'an also sounded the alarms at 9:18 a.m. to remind the people of the humiliating history.     On Sept. 18 in 1931, Shenyang resounded with the noise of cannons and explosions when Japanese forces attacked the barracks of Chinese troops. The move marked the beginning of a Japanese occupation that lasted 14 years.     A history museum in Changchun, capital of northeast China's Jilin Province, opened to the public for free as from Sept. 18. The Museum covers 10,600 square meters with more than 3,000 historical documents and materials.     An exhibition in Beijing displayed 220 photos and 260 items of historical relics on ordinary people's fighting against Japanese troops. The exhibition will run until April 30 in 2010.
