BEIJING, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and his Ukrainian counterpart Viktor Yanukovich expressed here Thursday the willingness to lift the friendly and cooperative China-Ukraine relationship to a new level.They also promised to strive to increase two-way trade to 10 billion U.S. dollars by 2012. He is also the first Ukrainian President to visit China since 2002.During the talks, Hu expressed readiness to further deepen and upgrade bilateral ties, as China has always placed importance on its relations with Ukraine, maintaining that the two sides should view bilateral ties from a strategic and long-term perspective.He expressed the readiness to work with the Ukrainian side to strengthen political dialogue and consultation through exchanges and inter-government contact.Hu said China will continue to strengthen cooperation with Ukraine in regional and international organizations to jointly promote global peace, stability and prosperity.Yanukovich said the two sides should work together to tap into the potential of bilateral strategic cooperation.He said the two sides should strengthen political dialogue, boost exchanges of high-level officials and increase exchanges between political parties and legislatures.Yanukovich expressed readiness to expand bilateral cooperation in the areas of trade, economy, investment, finance, science, technology, infrastructure development, agriculture and aerospace.Both Hu and Yanukovich said the consensus they reached during a meeting at the nuclear security summit in Washington in April added fresh impetus to bilateral ties.During his stay in Beijing, Yanukovich will also meet with top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao.Yanukovich will fly to Shanghai Saturday to attend the 2010 World Expo.

GUANGZHOU, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Devastating mud-slides triggered by historic rainfalls were blamed for the heavy casualty toll -- 70 dead and 65 missing -- in south China's Guangdong Province when typhoon Fanapi battered the region earlier this week, a government report said Saturday.The loss caused by mud-flows and landslides in Guangdong's mountainous western region is "very serious", said a disaster assessment report conducted by provincial disaster relief authorities. "Large-scale mud-slides occurred in many places, cutting off traffic and communications to towns and villages."In Magui Township, Gaochuan City alone, mud-slides left 66 dead or missing, it added. A military helicopter is seen on a drop-off point in Xinyi, south China's Guangdong Province, Sept. 25, 2010. Since torrential rainstorm brought by Typhoon Fanabi hit Guangdong this week and caused serious waterlog, China's army aviation regiment has bridged an air lifeline by airdropping daily necessities to disaster-stricken people.Xinhua reporters riding helicopters above the disaster zones saw a number of brown stripes of mud-slides laced the otherwise green mountain slopes. Flood-waters continued to flow down through the mud-slide tracks.Large swaths of farmlands were submerged in flood-waters while piles of rocks, debris, and trash dotted the basin at the foot of the mountains.By 6 p.m. Friday, about 99,500 people in Guangdong were evacuated for the Fanapi-brought disasters. Some 3,765 houses collapsed, 42,190 hectares of farmland were damaged, and the economic loss reached 2.4 billion yuan, latest official data show.Typhoon Fanapi, the 11th and strongest typhoon that hit China this year, landed in Fujian Province at 7 a.m. Monday, but wreaked most havoc in Guangdong, which neighbors Fujian on the south. No casualties have been reported in Fujian.In the country's most devastating mud-slides in decades, nearly 2,000 people were killed in Zhouqu, Guansu Province after days of torrential rains poured the region in early August this year.

  

PYONGYANG, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- The government of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) held a grand banquet here on Sunday to mark the 60th anniversary of the entry of the Chinese People's Volunteers (CPV) into the Korean front.Premier Choe Yong Rim of the DPRK's cabinet and Vice Chairman Guo Boxiong of China's Central Military Commission joined CPV veterans and hundreds of others on the occasion on the eve of the Monday anniversary.The CPV fought alongside Korean army and people during the war, helped the DPRK win liberation, and defended regional and global peace, said Yang Hyong Sop, vice-president of the Presidium of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly.He conveyed, on behalf of his country, warm greetings to CPV veterans as well as the Chinese army and people, adding that the DPRK is committed to enhancing its traditional friendship with China and passing it from generation to generation.In his address, Chinese ambassador Liu Hongcai recalled the profound friendship forged on the battlefields between the two peoples and two armies, saying their heroic feats contributed to upholding justice and opposing power politics, and their victory belongs to all peace-loving people across the world.China will always remember all those who had given their lives for peace and make concerted efforts with the DPRK to promote regional and global peace and development, he added.Before the banquet, Chinese delegates watched an adapted Chinese opera masterpiece performed by DPRK artists.
