Cocoa Beach is usually packed on Labor Day weekend.“Oh, it’s umbrella city; just an absolute zoo,” says resident Tom Burns. “That’s why we don’t come here on Labor Day.”However, that’s not the scene this year. There isn’t much for Burns and his wife, Melissa, to do but prepare and wait to see how Hurricane Dorian will impact them. “You just get prepared and hope for the best," he says. Gentile is helping board up a friend’s house that’s located just blocks from the beach. “This is a sitting duck right here,” she says. “It’s a bullseye right here." Gentile isn't leaving for the storm.“Obviously preparing for the worst and hoping for the best," she says.It's the kind of preparation Floridians like Sharon Smith have done before. "Our house is fully hurricane proof, and it did about 120 (mph) a couple of years ago," she explains.Speaking of houses, Tom and Melissa Burns closed on their new home in Cocoa Beach just three days ago.“Buying a house is stressful enough, but once we got done with that, they forecasted it and now it was like a whole new chapter of stress," Tom Burns says.They, too, have been played the hurricane waiting game before. “Just hunker down and enjoy our new house and hope it’s still there after the storm," he says.At this point, with boards and shutters up, and much of this area shut down, that’s all residents say they can do until Hurricane Dorian has passed. 1807

Avery Becker loves getting ready for his job, because it’s given him a new lease on life.“A lot of people just judge you and your outside appearance,” Becker said. “They don't really get to you or the person behind it."Becker has a severe auto immune disorder, which gets in the way of landing or even holding a job."I have lots of medical things,” he explained. “I have a disease called Churg Strauss. That is an auto immune disease that basically attacks all my major organs.”"If he has a fever, he has to go straight to the hospital,” explained Becker’s mom, Pam.While his mom worried companies won’t hire her son, one company, Brewability, welcomed him."We have people with autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, blind and deaf,” said Brewability owner Tiffany Fixter.Besides being able to serve up a cold one, inclusion is most important, Fixter says.Last year, only 19.3 percent of people with a disability were employed, according to the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics.“A lot of places that I have applied for said I can't work for them because I’d end up in the hospital or end up sick,” Becker said.Fixter takes on that responsibility to allow her staff to shine."We are all a part of the community--not one group should be put away and hidden," Fixter said.Despite her employee’s health being a determining factor on their ability to work certain days, Fixter has learned to make it all work."I try to pair someone who might have more medical needs with someone with less medical needs that way we can make sure we have someone here," she explained.Brewability offers their employees the chance to be a part of society in a way they never thought possible."It gives me a sense of purpose, and the fact that I get to work with disabled people like me, has made me feel less ashamed of it," Becker said.You can check out the Brewability Lab in Englewood, Colorado. 2017

Children's museums around the country are speaking out against inhumane treatment of migrant children in US detention centers.Following a call to action from the Association of Children's Museums, museums in Indiana, New York, Massachusetts and other states have pressed for more humane treatment of immigrant children and urgent action from politicians."Through forced separations and inhumane treatment in overcrowded, unsanitary facilities, the United States is denying children their basic human rights," said the Association of Children's Museums, which represents museums in all 50 states and 19 countries."What really drives children's museums is a deep passion around making the world a better place for children," ACM Executive Director Laura Huerta Migus told CNN.She added that ACM got involved because of concerns from member museums and because poor treatment of young migrants is an issue that threatens the well-being of children and causes trauma.The association also called for a more permanent policy effort to ensure that inhumane treatment of immigrant and refugee families does not continue in the future.The Children's Museum of Indianapolis echoed the call for better treatment, posting on Facebook, "We stand with our colleagues in the children's museum field in our belief that all children are valued citizens."Neighborhood North Museum of Play in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, and Kidzu Children's Museum in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, shared the statement and added that they "hold inclusivity and equity as core values."The concerns about the treatment of migrant children follow recent reports of unsanitary conditions and overcrowding at several US Customs and Border Protection facilities in Texas.
