The roaring American economy will probably sink into a recession before President Trump stands for re-election in 2020.At least that's the view of Ray Dalio, the billionaire investor who predicted the 2008 financial crisis."The probability of a recession prior to the next presidential election would be relatively high, 70% or something like that," Dalio said on Wednesday evening during an appearance at the Harvard Kennedy School's Institute of Politics.  471

The U.S. decline in cigarette smoking could be stalling while the adult vaping rate appears to be rising, according to a government report released Thursday.About 14% of U.S adults were cigarette smokers last year, the third year in a row the annual survey found that rate. But health officials said a change in the methodology make it hard to compare that to the same 14% reported for 2017 and 2018.The adult smoking rate last saw a substantial drop in 2017, when it fell from 16% the year before. The new figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention mean there are more than 34 million adult smokers in the U.S.Meanwhile, about 4.5% of adults were counted as current e-cigarette users last year — about 11 million people. That rate appears to be up from 3.2% in 2018 and 2.8% in 2017. But again, officials said that comparing 2019 with earlier years is difficult because of the survey change. The CDC figures are based on responses from about 32,000 people.Health officials have long called tobacco use the nation’s leading cause of preventable disease and death.___The Associated Press Health & Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Department of Science Education. The White House declined to comment Friday about a purported remark about Sen. John McCain by a communications staffer."I'm not going to comment on an internal staff meeting," press secretary Sarah Sanders said of Kelly Sadler's remark that McCain, who is being treated for brain cancer, is "dying."Sanders confirmed Sadler still works at the White House. On Thursday, Sadler, a special assistant who handles surrogate communications, told other staffers that McCain's opposition to President Donald Trump's CIA director nominee, Gina Haspel, does not matter because "he's dying anyway," a White House official told CNN. 627

The White House has once again lowered the American flag to half-staff, after the flag was left at its full height for most of the day on Monday. In a statement released at about 4 p.m. ET, President Trump ordered flags be flown at half-staff until Sunday, the day of McCain's internment at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. The Trump administration faced criticism from politicians across party lines for choosing to fly the flag at full-staff while the rest of the federal government continued to honor Senator John McCain by keeping the flag low. Ohio Gov. John Kasich called the decision to keep the flags flying high "shameful."While protocol calls for the flag to be flown at half-staff the day and the day after a member of Congress dies, recent tradition has kept the flag at half-staff until sunset on the day of member's interment.   868

The Salt Lake Tribune reported late Monday night that at least one person has died in a 'shots fired' incident on the University of Utah's campus. According to the university, it asked those on campus to "shelter in place" Monday night as authorities looked for the gunman, and other possible victims. Traffic was reportedly blocked off, and mass transit was shut down in the immediate vicinity of the shooting. The suspect is said to be 24-year-old Austin J. Boutain, who was wearing a coat, jeans and beanie, with a teardrop tattoo on his face. The university added that he may have been driving a forest green pick-up truck with Colorado plates. As of early Tuesday morning, he was still on the loose, and considered dangerous. 767
