(CNN) -- Vice President Mike Pence made an unannounced trip to Iraq to visit US troops ahead of Thanksgiving, landing in the country Saturday amid violent anti-government protests.Pence visited the Al Asad Air Force Base in western Iraq, where he was greeted by the US Ambassador to Iraq and several military officers. He received a classified briefing from the commanding officer on the base and spoke by phone with Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi. On the call, Pence told Mahdi that he traveled to Iraq in part to "extend gratitude to the men and women (of the US military) serving in your country," according to the TV travel pool with the vice president.Mike Pence and his wife Karen Pence later served the troops a Thanksgiving lunch, with the Vice President serving turkey and Mrs. Pence handing out yams.As service members came up to them, the Pences asked each where they were from and thanked them for their service.Vice President Pence then delivered remarks to about 150 service members in a hanger. "The President and your Vice President and the American people are behind you 100%," Pence said, according to the TV travel pool.Pence told the service members that the Trump administration was "fighting to secure another pay raise for the men and women in the military," but added "we need Congress to do their jobs," the TV travel pool reported."Congress should have finished their work months ago but you know that partisan politics and endless investigations have slowed things down," Pence said, according to the pool, referring to the House impeachment proceedings into President Donald Trump and Ukraine.Pence also mentioned the 1663

A federal judge on Tuesday blocked a Missouri law banning abortions after eight weeks from going into effect."The various sections specifying prohibitions on abortions at various weeks prior to viability cannot be allowed to go into effect on August 28, as scheduled," writes Judge Howard Sachs in an 11-page opinion.Tuesday's ruling comes after two other federal judges blocked similar abortion restrictions in Arkansas and Ohio earlier this summer, as the slew of state laws looking to challenge Roe v. Wade, the 1973 landmark ruling legalizing abortion nationwide, make their way through the courts. The Missouri law in question would penalize medical professionals who perform abortions after eight weeks into a pregnancy -- before many women know that they are pregnant, and well before the 24-week viability standard established by Roe -- with up to 15 years in prison. The law does not include exceptions for instances of rape or incest, only for instances of "medical emergency," such to prevent a pregnant woman's death or "substantial and irreversible physical impairment."Planned Parenthood, the American Civil Liberties Union and Paul, Weiss -- the law firm that argued in support of legalizing same-sex marriage in a landmark Supreme Court case -- filed the case last month. The law would ban abortion outright should the Supreme Court overturn Roe. It also includes bans on abortion at 14, 18 and 20 weeks, which could go into effect if a court finds the eight-week ban invalid. 1502

The senior, who was critically injured, was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital."There are no words sufficient to describe the loss of someone so young and full of promise — and mere weeks from graduation," university President Joseph M. McShane, said in a statement. "Fordham will confer a bachelor's degree upon Sydney posthumously, which we will present to her parents at the appropriate time."A mass was scheduled to be held for Monfries on Sunday evening at Fordham University Church. A man opened fire outside a federal courthouse in Dallas on Monday before he was shot and killed by federal officers, authorities said.No officers or other citizens were injured in the shooting on the south side of the Earle Cabell Federal Building, police said. The gunman, identified as Brian Isaack Clyde, 22, was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead, according to FBI special agent in charge Matthew J. DeSarno.DeSarno said during a Monday afternoon press conference that Clyde was discharged from the Army in 2017. The FBI is working with the Department of Defense "to examine his record and identify any associates," DeSarno said. The shooter's firearm was also recovered and federal authorities are trying to trace the gun's origins and how the shooter obtained it.DeSarno also said the suspect had more than five 40-round magazines on him. Authorities don't believe he entered the courthouse, DeSarno said. 935
