Facebook users briefly reported widespread issues with the social media site Thursday afternoon, according to Down Detector, a website that crowdsources telecommunication and social media outages.Down Detector reported that it received more than 6,300 reports of problems on Facebook at about 2 p.m. Thursday. ESTERO, Fla. — A Florida man saved his dog from certain death after he wrestled an alligator that snatched the puppy and dragged the pooch into a pond."He just came out like a missile," 74-year-old Richard Wilbanks of Estero said of the gator that attacked Gunner, his cavalier King Charles spaniel.Wilbanks jumped into the water, pried open the gator's mouth and freed Gunner from the gator's jaws.The rescue was caught on camera by the Florida Wildlife Federation.Wilbanks told CNN that his hands were "just chewed up," but Gunner is doing OK."We live on a shared landscape," Florida Wildlife Federation spokeswoman Meredith Budd told WINK-TV in Fort Myers. (KGTV) - A North County school district said it was hacked last week, forcing them to shut down parts of their network during registration week.The San Dieguito Union High School District sent out an email to parents on Thursday alerting them to “an attempted malware attack” on August 9.While they called it “attempted,” Superintendent Robert Haley confirmed to 10News that district IT employees detected malware implanted in the district’s system. However, Haley assured parents that no data had been viewed or taken from their network.As of Thursday, the parent portal remained shut down, which is where parents were supposed to input information for the start of the school year.In the email to parents, Haley said the portal would remain unavailable through the weekend. They have extended the deadline for parents to submit the required information.“SDUHSD is sorry for the inconvenience, however, protecting student and staff privacy is of the utmost importance,” wrote Haley. 1009

ENCINITAS (CNS) - The city of Encinitas announced its intent Tuesday to join a countywide joint-powers authority that would provide energy service to residents and compete with private companies like San Diego Gas & Electric.The Encinitas City Council voted Aug. 21 to join the JPA, which will be headed by the city of San Diego, because it aligns with the city's Climate Action Plan. In February, the San Diego City Council voted to begin the process of establishing a so-called community choice energy program with the intention of inviting other cities into the fold as the program expands.The county of San Diego and the cities of Chula Vista and La Mesa have also expressed a willingness to join the CCE program in recent weeks.
