If you're feeling a little — or maybe a lot — stressed about the election, you are by no means alone.That's the conclusion of a variety of surveys, which show that a majority of Americans are concerned about violence breaking out from supporters of whoever loses the presidential election, no matter who that is. However, there are ways to reduce election-related anxiety, and they're rooted in acting in one's own best interest, and in self-control, according to experts.The situation is exemplified by clashes seen over the weekend.In Times Square on Sunday, demonstrators in support of President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden clashed physically. Police separated the two sides and took a handful of people into custody.There were other such encounters, as well, many of which were posted online.The incidents, along with worries about the accurate vote count, the Postal Service properly doing its job on mail-in voting, long lines to cast a ballot, COVID-19 affecting ability to turn out to vote, and any number of other concerns, all add up to create a stressful election season.Experts who analyze election-related security issues agree.Gloria Browne-Marshall is a constitutional law professor at John Jay College, and author of "She Took Justice" and The Voting Rights War, both of which deal with challenges to voting."Because there have been so many uprisings of militia groups, and so many of these different tactics being used to disrupt protesters," Browne-Marshall said, "people are afraid that those entities are going to come out.""If [groups that are willing to do harm] see that they're losing the election, or their candidate is losing the election," Browne-Marshall continued, "they might come out to intimidate voters."Doron Kempel is a security expert, former Israeli Army commander, and founder of the personal security app Bond. He said that he's well aware of the anxiety that voters have."People feel so tense about what may occur, irrespective of whether you're on this or that side of the aisle," Kempel said in a Zoom interview. "Everybody's concerned that whatever happens, people are going to be upset, and are going to get emotional, and maybe there's going to be a little bit of violence."Polling bears that out.Earlier this month, a YouGov / Braver Angels national poll showed that a majority – 56% of people agreed or strongly agree with the following statement: "America will see an increase in violence as a result of the election."That’s far higher than the 11% who disagree or strongly disagree. Thirty-three percent of people polled said they neither agree nor disagree.The numbers indicate that more people are stressed than not.Research shows that there are ways to manage the tension and even turn it into action that's positive and protective."They should all have a voting plan," Browne-Marshall said, as she listed some ways people can reduce anxiety, by foiling any attempts to suppress voting. "And if things get disrupted by violence in the [voting] line, then don't wait till the last minute. Vote early if you can, in whatever state, vote in the way that's safest," she said.Kempel, the security expert, also said that there are measures that all voters can take to protect themselves during election season.First and foremost, said Kempel, there's reason to be more optimistic about the social and political climate, despite the fact that there's great tension."I don't think that Americans, in general, want to hurt each other," Kempel said. "So the fact that somebody's very upset, and is shouting, even is getting too close to somebody else's nose, and is being very vocal, that does not mean that he or she wants to hurt their counterpart.""Which means for all of us," he continued, "if we manage our egos, and we manage our emotions, there will not be violence."Dr. Steven Stosny is a psychologist who specializes in emotional issues and couples therapy. He coined the term election stress disorder, or ESD, and said that people in our region are experiencing it strongly.To counter it, said Stosny, "The most important thing you can do is connect with your family, your friends, people you love, even if you have to do it by Zoom.""If you're living with someone whom you love, hug that person six times a day," Stosny said. "That gives you a hormone that naturally regulates anxiety, makes you feel close, more trusting.""The second biggest thing," Stosny continued, "is exercise. That's the great reliever of stress. In a room of blue serenity, Amelia Moutin prepares for 90 minutes of what she describes as a completely unique sensation.“I think if you let yourself go, it takes about 30 minutes, and then once you kind of settle in and let your mind and body meld together, it’s such a euphoric-relaxation experience that is like none other,” Moutin described.The practice is called floating.“Technically, you lay in 10 inches of water, and 1,100 pounds of Epsom salt. And so, with the buoyancy of the salt, you float right on top of the water,” Samana Float Center owner Heather Clift said.Another term for it is sensory deprivation. The 94-degree water makes it challenging to know where your skin and the water meet creating a feeling of weightlessness. Clift says it was created by a gentleman named John C. Lilly in the early 1950s.“Sensory deprivation is where we void you of all of your senses, so with no light and no sound, there’s no smells in the float tank and there’s no real feeling,” Clift said.Moutin has been floating for a year now, and she tries to go once a month.“It’s kind of like floating in your own little ocean, but you have no fear at all. There’s no sharks, there’s no tide, there’s no possibility of drowning, so there’s literally nothing that can take away from the experience,” Moutin said.With no distractions, Moutin says she’s able to completely let go, relieving herself from the stressors of life. According to Clift, floating can help people who live with anxiety, PTSD, high blood pressure and insomnia among many other things.“It takes you from your sympathetic nervous system, which is your fight or flight, that’s what keeps you alive, and it puts you into the parasympathetic nervous system. And that is called rest and digest,” Clift said.Clift says shutting down your nervous system causes your body to drop its cortisol levels and replace it with dopamine. Dopamine is the hormone that makes our body feel happy and satisfied. It also boosts your immune system.Before the pandemic even started, Clift says the self-cleaning process of the tanks was already very effective at killing germs.“So, if there was anything that could live in 1,100 pounds of Epsom salt, the hydrogen peroxide would cling to it, it would go through the filter, and the UV light would blow it up, so it is impeccably clean," Clift said.However, in case that’s not enough, they’ve also started using ozone to clean all surfaces.“It kills SARS, coronaviruses…up to 99 percent,” Clift said.Clift says many people have made floating a priority this year because they need it now more than ever. Moutin agrees.“Ultimately as a world, we’re experiencing a traumatic event together, and trauma creates stress and issues in our tissues as we like to say,” Moutin said.Even if you don’t notice any physical health benefits, Clift says floating is a great way to relax.“I tell you to take a nap on some water for 90 minutes. How often can you do that? It’s really a special thing. Everybody should float at least once in their life,” Clift said. 3047
In 2019, reported hate crimes were the highest they’ve been in more than a decade, new stats released by the FBI show.What is a hate crime?“It’s different depending on the state. The federal government has their definition and each state really has their own definition,” said Stacey Hervey, Affiliate Criminal Justice Professor at Metropolitan State University of Denver.“Hate crimes are motivated by stereotypes, biases or prejudices against a certain group of individuals,” said Apryl Alexander, Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Denver.Last year, the U.S. saw the highest number of reported hate crime cases since 2008, as shown by the FBI’s recently released 2019 stats.“Hate crimes are often fueled by people who feel slighted in some way, that they have some sense of injustice for who they are,” Alexander said.She explained why people follow through with hate crimes.“When we’re referring to Mexican people as rapists what does that do to your psyche? Are you internalizing some of that and is that fueling you to commit some sort of hate crime or microaggression.”These thoughts can lead to words, or even violence. The more you hear them the more they can impact your thoughts.“We have a current atmosphere right now that those on the fringes, and it doesn't matter what side of the extremist fringe you're on, kind of condones that violence,” Hervey explained. “Social media, because we've been cooped up, definitely has a role in encouraging…giving people the opportunity to find like-minded people who have their same viewpoints.”Hervey explained that current events, mixed with everyone staying home, and different groups targeting people on social media during the pandemic, are all having a big impact.“You're seeing these organized hate crime groups grooming these loner type individuals looking for this collective identity. Also what you see with gang membership,” Hervey said. “Social isolation is leading people to find their collective identity or group online.”Of the 8,302 hate crime offenses reported in 2019, a reported 57.6% stemmed from race, ethnicity, and ancestry bias. The second largest category was motivated by religious bias at 20%, according to FBI data.“It used to be based on sexual orientation was the largest group for hate crimes, and now it’s really turned to ethnicity and race,” Hervey said.“It’s affecting communities. What’s happening right now is communities of color being fearful of going out in public knowing these hate crimes are existing,” Alexander said.While not all hate crimes go reported due to fear, or differing definitions based on jurisdiction, Hervey and Alexander said bystanders can play an important role in awareness.“People are afraid to get involved because of increased violence in our society. My recommendation for people who witness something is to document it either through their phone or through a written format, and then encourage people to call the police so it can be documented because it is an increased problem today in society,” Hervey said. 3056

It’s used to treat everything from pain to mood disorders and can be just what the doctor ordered for many.But now, there is mounting research uncovering misuse of and even a black market for this popular prescription.We’re talking about gabapentin. It’s approved for some types of seizures and nerve pain.Doctors also use it off-label to treat everything from insomnia to migraines to anxiety. Sixty-four million prescriptions of it were sold in the U.S. in 2016, up more than 60 percent from four years earlier.The thing is, experts say there is growing evidence it’s being abused, too. It’s even being sold on the streets under the name “Johnnys.” Dr. Joseph Insler, an addiction psychiatrist, says he’s seeing it all too often.“Sometimes, I've even experienced patients ask me for their “Johnnys” and then they'll, maybe, catch themselves and say, ‘No, no, no. I mean gabapentin',” he says.Why is this prescription being misused?“I think that some individuals may say that they use it to get high, and others may say they use it and get a drowsy effect. So, we're talking about the euphoria versus sedation, “ says Rachel Vickers Smith, Ph.D.Dr Vickers Smith wrote her dissertation on gabapentin abuse when studying drug abusers in Appalachia.“We found a nearly 3000 percent increase from 2008 to about 2014 in individuals reporting gabapentin abuse for the purposes of getting high,” she says.We wanted to see for ourselves, so we searched online. We easily found people talking about taking “Johnnys”, or gabapentin, to get high. There were also threads of people trying to spread awareness about the abuse.Experts say gabapentin is typically misused by substance abusers who mix it with other drugs.But, Dr. Insler says it’s also possible for people with legitimate prescriptions to misuse, too.He says, “If somebody’s taking excessively high doses or needing early refills” or if their mood changes, family members or clinicians should see these signs as red flags.A growing body of research shows the problem of abuse, especially among substance abusers is clear. But some experts also worry about the number of prescriptions being handed out.A recent New England Journal of Medicine letter warned that “clinicians who are desperate for alternatives to opioids” are “increasingly prescribing gabapentin” and that “evidence suggests that some patients misuse, abuse or divert gabapentin.”Dr Rachel Vickers Smith says, “ I think that's why it's really important to get out the message,” about abuse, in general.Gabapentin is not a controlled substance or scheduled drug on the Federal level.We reached out to several government agencies. There was little information on potential abuse although the National Institute on Drug Abuse pointed us to existing research and the DEA says it is beginning to receive calls.Dr Vickers Smith says, “ I don't think that gabapentin abuse is on the CDC, DEA’s, NIDA’s radar, in part because we had this opioid epidemic.”All experts we talked to stress that this is NOT the next opioid epidemic, but they believe gabapentin abuse is something to watch closely and believe more research is needed.We contacted two of the manufacturers of gabapentin, including Pfizer, which told us, “Gabapentin is an important treatment option for their approved indications”. 3416
