NANNING, May 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping has called for full preparations for possible flooding in Guangxi while urging the region to step up drought relief work.After suffering a severe drought that left more than 20 million people short of water since August last year, south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region is embracing its flood season.A rain-triggered landslide has already killed three people, including a 5-year-old child, in the region, authorities announced Monday. Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping (C Front) talks to local residents in Baise, south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, May 10, 2010. BRISBANE, Australia, April 4 (Xinhua) -- All the crew members are safe after a Chinese coal ship ran aground off the eastern coast of Australia on Saturday, said Chinese Consul-general in Brisbane Ren Gongping on Sunday.Ren told Xinhua that the 230-meter-long bulk coal carrier Shen Neng 1 ran aground about 70 km east of Great Keppel Island in Queensland State shortly after 5 p.m. on Saturday.The vessel, carrying 950 tons of heavy fuel oil and 65,000 tons of coal, is bound for China.Ren said he had phoned the captain of the carrier, Wang Jichang, who told Ren that drinking water and food are enough for the 23 crew members. The incident caused no injuries to the crew.The consul-general said the captain told him the incident is not serious and repair is underway.Ren added that he was very much concerned about the safety of the Chinese crew and he had contacted the local police immediately after learning the incident. The police had assured Ren that they would try their best to safeguard the crew in case of an emergency.Three police ships have reached the area and are ready to take the crew to safe place from the coal carrier.

BEIJING, May 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu has urged reconstruction authorities to protect the fragile ecosystem and improve living conditions during their work in the quake-hit Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture.Hui was speaking at a meeting held by the State Council on Friday in Beijing to evaluate a report on the reconstruction's impact on resources and the environment.A 7.1-magnitude earthquake jolted Yushu in the Himalayan northwest Qinghai Province on April 14, leaving at least 2,200 deaths.The State Council, or Cabinet, approved the report at the meeting and Hui said reconstruction planners should consider the impact of their projects on the ecosystem.The epicenter of the devastating quake was at the headwaters of three major rivers -- the Yangtze, the Yellow and the Lancang rivers -- that run through China and neighboring countries.The clearing of debris, selection of sites for new towns and development of other industries in the quake area should all prioritize environmental protection, and natural forests as well as vegetative cover should be protected and restored, Hui said.The government has pledged to finish reconstruction work within three years.

BEIJING, May 25 (Xinhua) -- China on Tuesday again urged all parties involved in the dispute over the sinking of the Republic of Korean (ROK) "Cheonan" warship, to exercise calmness and restraint and properly address related problems so as to avoid an escalation of tension.China has noted the investigation results released by the ROK and the response of all concerned parties, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said at a regular press briefing."China considers that international and regional matters should be handled in an objective and fair manner and based on facts," said Jiang."Under current circumstance, any measure taken by any side should be conducive to peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula, not to the contrary," she said.Jiang said China has always been committed to maintaining stability in Northeast Asia and the Korean Peninsula, promoting the six-party talks and denuclearization of the Peninsula."It is better to have dialogue rather than engaging in confrontation, and an eased situation is better than tension," she said.To safeguard peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia is in the common interests of all parties and is a shared responsibility of all countries in the region."China is resolutely against any behavior which is in violation of peace and stability in Northeast Asia," she said.

XIANGNING, Shanxi, April 5 (Xinhua) -- Sixty of the 115 workers who were pulled out alive after being trapped for over a week in a flooded coal mine in north China will be transferred to big city hospitals for better medical treatment, local authorities late Monday.Currently, the survivors are being treated at five hospitals near Wangjialing Coal Mine, which straddles Xiangning County, of Linfen City, and Hejin City, of Yuncheng City, in Shanxi Province.The Shanxi provincial government and medical experts dispatched by the Health Ministry have decided to transfer 60 rescued miners to key hospitals in the provincial capital Taiyuan Tuesday to receive better treatment.A special train will be deployed by the Ministry of Railways to take the patients to Taiyuan. The train will depart at 7:00 Tuesday morning and the trip will take 4 to 5 hours.Each of the patients will be equipped with two medical staff.
