SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It sounds like a deal of a lifetime - guarantee a weeklong vacation at a coastal resort every year - for a one-time payment of 0.The county of San Diego is auctioning off nearly 900 timeshares, some in areas like Del Mar, Solana Beach, Carlsbad and downtown for as little as 0. Timeshares can also be transferred to out-of-town hotels, one year at a time. The county expects many to go at the initial offering price. A timeshare is when a person shares in the ownership of a property with others, so that each gets a week of vacation per year. Many of the timeshares were repossessed after the Great Recession, when owners failed to pay at least five years of property tax. "For one week of family bliss in a vacation once a year, this may be the opportunity for as little as 0," said Dan McAllister, the county treasurer-tax collector. "But it is a buyer beware sale."San Diego attorney Dan Eaton said there are many risks to buying a timeshare, and getting out of one can be very difficult."If you think you're just buying a 0 timeshare and you've got access to the timeshare for life without any further cost, that's a huge mistake," Eaton said. Timeshares include annual fees - including maintenance - that can get very expensive."If you stop paying those fees, they can foreclose," Eaton said. "It's an interest in real property."At the Solana Beach Sand Pebbles resort - starting bid 0 - annual fees range from 4 to 2 depending on unit size. And some of the timeshares don't include some parts of the year. Allison Russell, the resort's property manager, said it's vital people do their due diligence before buying. She said the resort books up early, and owners need to reserve their week sometimes far in advance.Eaton said timeshares can work if you plan to go to the same resort year after year, but with so many options now available - including airbnb - it may be best to keep that 0.The county auction is online and runs from May 4 to May 9. The 2020 Rental Affordability Report consisting of census data compiled by ATTOM Data Solutions broke down the figures for counties nationwide. Although the price of owning a median-priced three-bedroom home was more affordable than renting in 53 percent of U.S. counties studied, renting was a better financial decision in highly populated suburban or urban areas. Los Angeles County and the counties of Phoenix, Las Vegas, San Francisco, and Seattle were also included in the figure. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Long wait times have always been a problem at the DMV, the way to avoid that was to make an appointment online to skip the long lines. For people needing to renew their license like Debby Herscovitz, they had to plans months in advance, “I went online, booked an appointment, but I had no idea it was going to be in March”. Herscovitz got a notification from the DMV in the mail to renew her license back in December and immediately tried to make an appointment. She tells us the first available time slot was at the end of March, “I absolutely had no idea it was going to take that long”. A DMV representative tells 10News, drivers are trying to avoid the hours long line at the DMV by making an appointment online. Because so many people are scheduling appointments, the appointments are filling up faster than ever before. For Herscovitz, her appointment would have taken a total of 15 minutes to get her Real ID, however she didn’t have all the necessary documents. The DMV tells 10News to help people adjust to the new requirements and be prepared for their appointments they have a video people can watch before they make the trip in. Despite having to plan months in advance, the DMV says it’s still the best idea to schedule an appointment online before heading to a nearby office. Tips to keep in mind that could help with the scheduling process: don’t rule out nearby offices because some might not be as busy as others. Also, continue to check back online to see if any cancellations were made. Here in San Diego, there are also a few offices with extended hours and that are open on Saturdays. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Maintenance crews were hard at work at UC San Diego Tuesday fortifying campus buildings ahead of the rainstorms expected this week, all while several dorms continued to dry out from the last one.Workers shored up roofs and deployed straw wattles and 200 sandbags near the Marshall Lower Apartments. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It's a new twist on Black Friday shopping. Customers are flocking to buy ammunition before a new California gun law goes into effect. It’s called the “1 million round month.” Just a few hours after opening its doors, Poway Weapons and Gear Range sold half of their 1.2 million rounds of ammo. “Today is a direct reflection of the law,” says Danielle Rudolph, Director of Sales at Poway Weapons and Gear Range. “People are trying to stock up and save up now that way they don’t have to worry about it next year.” The new law starting in July says in addition to a gun permit, gun owners will have to pass another background check to buy ammunition. Retailers will then have to log the amount of ammo gun owners purchase in a database. The records will be sent to the Department of Justice. When asked about the store’s large sale, Ron Marcus with the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence said in part: “The bottom line is regardless of how people try to prepare themselves before the law goes into effect, majority of Californians voted on Prop. 63 that put these laws into effect."Store owners say they will order more ammunition for customers to purchase at a reduced price.
