TASHKENT, May 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Finance Minister Xie Xuren made three proposals to the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for its future development here on Monday.At a business session of the 43rd annual meeting for ADB Board of Governors that kicked off Monday, Xie said the ADB should fully tap its potential as a knowledge platform in seeking ways for Asia 's future development.It should also promote collective economic expansion of Asia by deepening regional economic cooperation, said Xie.Thirdly, the ADB should raise its assistance efficiency and enhance its capacity for institution building, while making active contribution to the regional prosperity and stability, he added.All Asian members are still facing difficult tasks of retaining economic growth and adjusting economic structure, because the basis for world's recovery from the global financial crisis has not been consolidated so far, said the Chinese minister.On the sidelines of ADB's first annual meeting in Central Asia, Xie also met with Uzbek President Islam Karimov, Uzbek First Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Rustam Azimov and heads of delegations including Bangladesh, New Zealand and Fiji.

PARIS, May 11 (Xinhua) -- The efforts made by China on its course of development has made it a successful example for other emerging countries, the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's chief said to Xinhua in an exclusive interview here on Tuesday, four days before her trip to China and the Shanghai Expo.The UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova will pay a working visit to Shanghai and Beijing from May 16, during which she will have a two-day stop for the Shanghai Expo, which has opened doors to the public on May 1."We've seen the efforts of China, which are spectacular in all areas of development ... it also shows that with political will, with the efforts of an entire people to focus on development, it is possible to overcome certain difficulties," she said.She praised China's "very impressive" development and said China should also share its experience with other developing countries because it "is a good example that can bring millions of people out of poverty by adapting to a globalized world."Additionally, she encouraged China to engage more into UNESCO affairs in Africa and in Asia on educational domain.As to the Shanghai Expo, the UNESCO has set up its own pavilion at the Expo site and Bokova herself has personally planned diversified activities, lectures and conversations at the pavilion to provide platforms for idea exchanges with Chinese people and foreign visitors, the veteran diplomat told Xinhua.The Shanghai World Expo "gives an opportunity for all countries and all organizations to make a sort of communication on their values and their activities," she said, seeing it "a great event for China and for the entire international community."Bokova is expected to launch a UN report on cultural diversity at the UNESCO pavilion, which is specially designed to focus on material and immaterial cultural heritages, education issues and scientific topics including climate change, water management and etc.She spoke highly of the great effort made by the Chinese authorities to organize the World Expo in Shanghai."I know that the 'motto' of this exhibition is about urban ( Better City, Better Life). NANNING, June 3 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from rain-triggered landslides and flooding in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region rose to 44 Thursday.Eight people were still missing, said a statement from the regional flood control and drought relief headquarters.In Rongxian County alone, the death toll climbed to 27 after four more bodies were recovered Thursday.In Cenxi County, 12 people were confirmed dead as of Wednesday night.Three deaths were reported in Tengxian County, Donglan County and Fangchenggang City.Rescuers search for trapped persons in Beigeng Township, Xincheng County, south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, June 3, 2010.Two primary school students, sisters aged 8 and 10, had been found drowned in Laibin City where flooding forced many schools to suspend classes.More than 600 residents in two villages in Laibin had been evacuated because of land subsidence Thursday. Four pits and cracks were reported near the villages, with the biggest having a diameter of more than 70 meters and depth of 20 meters.Increased water flow in underground rivers in wake of the torrential rains could have caused the subsidence, a Laibin municipal government official said.Heavy rains began pounding Guangxi Monday and triggered landslides early Wednesday.Across Guangxi, the rainstorms had battered 27 counties and 144,800 people had been evacuated by 4 p.m. Thursday, the regional civil affairs bureau said.In addition, 8,123 houses had collapsed and 161,830 hectares of crops had been damaged. The direct economic losses were estimated at 1.2 billion yuan (176 million U.S. dollars).

BEIJING, May 20 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States Thursday pledged to deepen clean energy cooperation as U.S. commerce chief led a large green power delegation to Beijing."As major energy producers and consumers, China and the United States can work together extensively in the clean energy field," Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang told U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke in Beijing.The driving force behind cooperation, Li said, lies in the fact that China is actively pushing ahead with clean energy projects while the United States has green energy expertise and technology.Li encouraged the two countries to work more closely in clean energy,greenhouse gas emissions reduction, technological development to add to the momentum of sustainable development.Locke is leading a delegation of business executives from American clean energy companies eyeing China's fast growing green energy market, the size of which the United States has predicted will be 100 billion U.S. dollars by 2020."These 24 companies we brought from America represent a cross-section, a variety of different sectors," Locke said at the start of the meeting."But they still represent the best the United States has to offer in terms of clean energy, energy efficiency, electricity generation and distribution," said Locke, who earlier travelled to Hong Kong and Shanghai on the trade mission that started Monday.The diverse trade mission, the first one led by a U.S. cabinet-level official since Barack Obama assumed the presidency, includes leading energy firms like General Electric and First Solar as well as less well-known companies.Locke, on his third visit to China since he became U.S. commerce chief, characterized clean energy as "an extremely promising industry to foster areas of growth and create new jobs."He underscored the U.S.'s commitment to working closely with China in clean energy.Locke will join U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and other cabinet officials for the Second China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue scheduled for Monday and Tuesday in Beijing.

BEIJING, April 3 (Xinhua) -- China's Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) of the non-manufacturing sector rose to 58.4 percent in March, a rebound of12 percentage points from February, when the index fell below the boom-bust line of 50 percent for the first time since a year earlier, an industrial association said Saturday.The PMI, designed to provide a real-time snapshot of business conditions, includes a package of indices including new orders, inventory levels, production and others that measure economic performance. A reading of above 50 percent suggests expansion, while one below 50 percent indicates contraction.The rise of the index indicated robust market activities in service sectors, which combined with an optimistic outlook that would encourage private investment and promote healthy and coordinated development of national economy, said the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing (CFLP) vice president Cai Jin.According to the CFLP survey, the new order sub-index for China's non-manufacturing sector climbed to 54.6 percent last month, up 8.4 percentage points than February. The outlook sub-index was 70.4 percent, up 2.4 percentage points.The CFLP survey covers 20 non-manufacturing industries, including logistics, wholesale, hospitality, supermarkets and construction.The PMI for manufacturing sectors rose to 55.1 percent in March, the 13th straight month that the index was above 50 percent.
