DENVER, Colorado — A new study from the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus highlights a startling aspect of the United States' opioid crisis: Many emergency room doctors don't realize just how often they're prescribing the addictive pain meds.CU researchers, along with researchers at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, conducted a year-long study examining the prescription-writing behavior of more than 100 doctors at four different hospital emergency departments.The researchers first surveyed the doctors, asking how often they prescribed opioids compared to their peers, and found that 65 percent of the doctors actually wrote more opioid prescriptions than they thought they did.Out of a total of 75,203 prescriptions written over the course of the year, 15,124 of them — or slightly more than 20 percent — were for opioids.After researchers showed the doctors the actual data, the doctors started writing fewer opioid prescriptions."Everyone showed an overall decrease in prescribing opioids," said study author Sean Michael, an assistant professor of emergency medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. "After seeing their real data, the people with inaccurate self-perceptions, on average, had 2.1 fewer opioid prescriptions per 100 patients six months later and 2.2 percent fewer prescriptions per 100 patients at 12 months."The study only highlights a small piece of the opioid prescription problem, the authors state, since emergency room doctors hand out just 5 to 10 percent of all opioid prescriptions."Despite making progress on the opioid epidemic, we can't assume providers are behaving optimally and have all the information they need to do what we are asking of them," Michael said. "Most believe they are doing the right thing, but we need to directly address this thinking to be sure they are not part of the problem."The study is published in the journal Academic Emergency Medicine. 1961

DETROIT, Mich. -- The Detroit Police Department is responding to a video that shows an officer fatally shooting a dog in its own yard.Officers say it happened Aug. 3 on the east side of the Michigan city.The video shows the dog in a yard latching onto a police K-9's snout and not letting go. The officer then drew her weapon and shot the dog, which died from its injuries."It's unfortunate that it came to this. We do not like to see any animal hurt, especially these K-9 officers. They are truly dog lovers and champions for K-9s. But at this point, her dog was being severely injured and had no choice," Commander Darin Szilagy said.Detroit police did internally investigate and cleared the officer of any wrongdoing.That K-9 officer continues to be evaluated and treated for injuries. DENVER, Colorado — Authorities say one person is dead and four others have been wounded in a shooting in broad daylight in downtown Denver.It happened around 4 p.m. local time Monday near the busy intersection of 21st and Lawrence streets. A suspect or suspects remain at large. Police say the four wounded in the shooting were transported to Denver Health in stable condition. The fatal victim, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced at the scene. DALLAS — Southwest Airlines is moving closer to the first furloughs in the airline's nearly 50-year history. The airline warned nearly 7,000 employees this week that they could lose their jobs unless labor unions accept concessions to help Southwest cope with a sharp drop in travel during the pandemic. That's roughly 12% of the airline's staff.The jobs impacted include customer service agents, ramp agents, operations agents, provisioning agents and freight agents nationwide. Last month, Southwest warned another 400 mechanics could be furloughed. Southwest is seeking pay cuts of around 10% in exchange for no furloughs through 2021. In WARN letters required by law of the possible involuntary furloughs, Southwest says they were able to operate without any employee pay cuts, layoffs or furloughs this year because of the Payroll Support Program in the CARES Act from Congress. Once the protections and funding expired on September 30, the airline says they implemented voluntary separation opportunities, "with approximately 25 percent of Employees taking voluntary options," the airline writes. The airline’s top labor-relations official says negotiations with unions have stalled. DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) — Deputies are searching for a driver who recently hit a 39-year-old man in a Del Mar alley and sped off. The victim was walking southbound in an alley between 10th and 11th Streets at about 2 a.m. on Nov. 9, according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department. An unknown vehicle driving northbound in the alley struck the victim without stopping to check on him, and left the scene.RELATED: Man left for dead in Del Mar alley after hit-and-runThe victim suffered several injuries, including a broken pelvis, tibia, fibula, and femur, and several cuts to his body and head. The man is expected to survive his injuries, but is still hospitalized.Investigators believe the vehicle involved was a light-colored, compact SUV.
