TONAWANDA, N.Y. — Less than a week after baby Carter Dominguez was brought into the world, baby and mom are enjoying time at their Tonawanda, New York, home. It’s the journey here, and it's what Elizabeth ate before she gave birth that’s made this new mom experience anything but easy. “I just want everyone to know that this can happen,” she said. “I don’t want it to happen to anyone else.” When Elizabeth Dominguez went into labor, she was asked for a urine sample. “I did a urine test and it came back that I tested positive for opiates,” she said. “I called my husband freaking out saying, ‘how is this possible?’ I don’t do drugs." Her husband, Mark Dominguez, asked what she had to eat that day. “And I told him a bagel and a sub," she said. "That’s all I had. He told me it must be from the bagel.” The new mom had eaten a bagel covered in poppy seeds. Poppy seeds are derived from the opium plant. “In some cases eating a large amount of poppy seeds, such as the kind found in a bagel, has been shown to produce low levels of morphine and codeine in the urine,” said Michelle Rainka, a clinical pharmacist at DENT Neurologic Institute. “Potentially those seeds have not been washed and can contain that.” Rainka says anyone about to take a drug test should know this. “Anywhere from one to three bagels with poppy seeds can produce positive tests on a urine toxicology,” Rainka said. Elizabeth Dominguez gave birth later that day, and her baby’s tests for opiates came back negative. Still, the hospital monitored Carter for withdrawal and because she failed the drug test, hospital staff followed protocol and called Child Protective Services. She was discharged but Carter had to stay, separating mom and baby less than 24 hours after birth. “I felt absolutely horrible,” she said. “I felt like a terrible mother leaving him. I just want everyone to know that this could happen. It’s such a terrible thing and I don’t want it to happen to anyone.” Reports show she did have a false positive because of the poppy seed bagel. 2048

Three Muslim families were not allowed to board a New York City ferry after they were told they posed a "security issue," according to a discrimination complaint filed with the New York City Commission on Human Rights this week. The complaint was filed by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) on behalf of the families, which included eight children, against HNY Ferry, LLC; New York City Economic Development Corporation; the City of New York; and two employees referred to as John Doe 1 and Jane Doe 1.The suit seeks disciplinary actions, a formal apology and compensatory damages for "humiliation, embarrassment, and severe emotional distress," claiming that not being allowed to board was based on discrimination and that the security concerns were an "after-the-fact false excuse."A day out and a change of plansSeptember 21 was meant to be a day for three women and their children, ages two months to 14 years old, to enjoy before one of the families went to Pakistan for an extended period of time, the complaint said. Two of the women wore hijabs, according to the complaint. The plan was to visit Governor's Island, but after taking the first ferry from their Brooklyn home to Wall Street they realized that it was getting late and changed their plans to go to Brooklyn's Pier 6 instead, the complaint said. Instead of navigating the line with young children and a double stroller, the women got permission to wait to the side and board last. When their turn came, two ferry employees allegedly told them he had been informed by security not to let them on, the complaint said. But when he and another employee escorted the families to security, the officer "was confused and did not know why Jane and John Doe 1 were blaming security," according to the complaint. The families said the ferry left without them.As they were discussing the situation, another employee of HNY Ferry allegedly raised her voice, telling the families that they weren't allowed on the ferry to Pier 6 because the children were standing on the seats on their last ferry ride. But when they returned to their starting destination, a crew member they had spoken to early in the day said she did not remember the children behaving inappropriately, the complaint said. The families stated they "believe this was an after-the-fact false excuse in an attempt to explain away Respondents' discriminatory conduct and denial of services."CNN has reached out to HNY Ferry for comment, but has not heard back. The ferry is operated by a company called Hornblower, which could not be reached for comment. Both the NYCEDC and the mayor's office said the city would investigate the incident."Discrimination has no place in our city. The City will investigate these allegations, and if they are proven true, take swift and appropriate action to hold those responsible accountable," a spokesperson for NYCEDC said."Discrimination anywhere is an insult to ALL New Yorkers. My team is looking into this. Bigotry has no place in this city. We will confront it and hold those involved accountable," Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted.Struggling to explain to their childrenThe women and their children were "embarrassed and humiliated," the complaint said, adding that passengers were watching them as they were barred from boarding. Many of the children were crying and confused about why they weren't allowed on the ferry. The parents have struggled to explain to them why they were treated that way, the complaint said."If we look at the totality of the circumstances, the employees went from labeling and telling these families that they were a security issue to telling them the children were standing on the seats in a previous ferry ride." The narrative has changed "to excuse the discriminatory conduct," said Ahmed Mohamed, an attorney for the Council on American-Islamic Relations. After waiting for two hours, the families say they were allowed to board the ferry, but canceled their plans and went back home to Brooklyn. After filing a complaint to NYC Ferry, the families say that NYC Ferry called the incident a "misunderstanding," and offered to reimburse their fare. 4155

The State Department ordered Wednesday the departure of non-emergency US government employees from Iraq amid increasing tensions with Iran and warned US citizens not to travel to the country, citing a "high risk for violence and kidnapping."The department said in a statement that employees working in the US embassy in Baghdad and the US consulate in Erbil were instructed to leave Iraq, and that "normal visa services will be temporarily suspended at both posts."It added that American Citizens Services employees who were working in the embassy in Baghdad "will continue to provide consular services to U.S. citizens in Basrah."The department said the sudden changes were because the US government's "ability to provide routine and emergency services to US citizens in Iraq is extremely limited" and that as a result, the threat of "terrorism, kidnapping, and armed conflict" aimed at Americans in the country was too great a risk.Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made an unannounced visit to Iraq last week amid escalating tensions with Iran. While there, Pompeo said he spoke to Iraqi officials "about the importance of Iraq ensuring that it's able to adequately protect Americans in their country."US officials have told CNN the US had "specific and credible" intelligence that suggested Iranian forces and proxies were planning to target US forces in locations including Iraq. That intelligence led the Pentagon to recommend a carrier strike group be moved to the region. The State Department also said Wednesday that Americans "should not travel through Iraq to Syria to engage in armed conflict" as they may face similar threats in Syria and face "legal risks" from both the US and Syria. The orders from the State Department come a day after US Central Command, which oversees US military operations in the Middle East, said in a statement that the Pentagon has increased the threat risk for US troops in Iraq and Syria."US Central Command, in coordination with Operation Inherent Resolve, has increased the force posture level for all service members assigned to OIR in Iraq and Syria. As a result, OIR is now at a high level of alert as we continue to closely monitor credible and possibly imminent threats to US forces in Iraq," US Navy Capt. Bill Urban, a spokesman for Central Command, said in a statement Tuesday.Urban's statement also pushed back against comments made earlier Tuesday by the deputy commander of the US-led military coalition against ISIS, UK Major Gen. Chris Ghika, who said "there has been no increased threat from Iranian backed forces in Iraq and Syria." 2598
