Less than two weeks after announcing that he had contracted COVID-19, Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, appeared at Judge Amy Coney Barrett's confirmation hearing in-person on Monday and delivered his opening remarks without a mask.On Oct. 2, Lee announced that he had tested positive for COVID-19. He was one of about a dozen high-ranking government officials — including President Donald Trump — who attended Barrett's Sept. 26 nomination ceremony at the White House and later contracted the virus.Lee said he had received a letter from Congress's attending physician, Dr. Brian Monahan, clearing him to return to his in-person duties — though the letter did not note that Lee had tested negative for the virus."Based upon current CDC guidelines, you have met criteria to end COVID-19 isolation for those with mild to moderate disease," Monahan's letter read. "Specifically, it has been greater than 10 days since symptom onset, you have had no fever in absence of fever reducing medication for at least 24 hours, and your other symptoms have improved. The CDC does not recommend repeat SARS-CoV-2 PCR testing if these criteria are met.”It's unclear if Lee was tested prior to appearing in the Capitol Building on Monday. A call to Lee's press office in Washington was not returned.Lee was wearing a mask when entering the hearing room, and photos show that he continued to wear one when not speaking. However, Lee did remove his mask for his opening statements.Senators on the Judiciary Committee were permitted to attend Monday's hearing virtually. Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vermont, Sen. Ted Cruz, D-Texas, and Sen. Kamala Harris, D-California were among the committee members who gave their opening statements via video teleconference.Sen. Thom Tillis, R-North Carolina, a Committee member who announced a positive COVID-19 test the same day that Lee did, chose to deliver his opening statements via teleconference.Lee's appearance comes after Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham refused to take a COVID-19 test ahead of a debate against his Senate seat challenger, Jaime Harrison. Graham's refusal to take a test forced a change in format for the weekend debate.During his opening comments, Leahy claimed that Republican senator's aversion to COVID-19 tests was a political tactic to remove any risk that would delay Barrett's nomination until after election day.In his opening remarks, Graham said that his committee had consulted with Monahan and the Capitol architect officials to set up the hearing room "in a fashion we can safely do our business."Following senators' opening statements, Graham explained that the Capitol architect had deemed the hearing room to be in compliance with CDC social distancing guidelines. He said that he wanted to make sure the room was safe but added that like the rest of America, the Senate needed to get "back to work."He also added that he had tested negative "last Friday" following brief contact with Lee, and said that he would not be tested for the virus at the request of "political opponents."Earlier this year, Monahan asked senators to wear masks while on the Senate floor. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has required them for lawmakers.President Donald Trump — who announced his positive COVID-19 test the same day as Lee and Tillis — has also already resumed in-person activities. (KGTV) — Police are searching for a man who disappeared from an independent living facility in la Mesa.La Mesa Police say Attila "Al" Buki left his home in the 7900 block of Culowee Street at about 7 p.m. on Sunday and did not return.Buki was on foot and does not have access to a vehicle, police say. He also has cognitive delays and suffers from dementia.Buki frequents the area near La Mesa Springs Shopping Center, police added.He's described as a Caucasian man, who was last seen wearing a long grey polo shirt, dark grey sweatpants, and Velcro sandals.Anyone with information as to Buki's whereabouts is asked to call La Mesa Police at 619-667-1400. 679

LAS VEGAS — Four contestants of the Mrs. America Pageant 2018 have accused the pageant's executive director of racial bias during conversations he had with them at the event in August.The contestants made the claims while speaking to media with their attorney, Gloria Alred, in New York today.The pageant took place in August 2018 in Las Vegas.Alred said some black participants allege that they were subjected to racially insensitive comments. They were made by the executive director and co-founder of the pageant, David Marmel. He "subjected them to listening to racial stereotypes about African-American Women and African-American men," Alred said.A white participant overheard the conversation, she said. The people who heard the comments shared that information with their families after it occurred.The contestants have come out with the information now to ensure pageant participants in the future will not endure the alleged racial bias. The women do not plan to file a claim or lawsuit, they simply want the pageant to be a place where everyone is respected and feels safe, Alred said.Marmel, who is white, has been accused of using the "n" word when referencing blacks, and telling the contestants that black women should stop having babies with multiple men, and called them "baby daddies."He also told the contestants they should be thankful for what he has done for the black community and saying the most racist people he's ever known are the leaders of "Ebony" and "Jet" magazines, according to the women who spoke at today's news conference.The contestants said they stayed quiet at the time for fear of being removed from the pageant. (KGTV) — An East County father who lost his young son in a terrorist bombing in Sri Lanka is reacting to the death of the ISIS founder, who claimed credit for that attack.Alexander Arrow and his son, 11-year-old Kieran Alexander Shafritz de Zoysa, often found themselves on the trails of the Oakoasis County Preserve in Lakeside."We couldn't possibly pass anyone on the trail without him saying hi," said Arrow.Arrow says Kieran was friendly and exceptionally bright, with dreams of becoming a neuroscientist so he could help people. This past Easter, Kieran was in the city of Colombo, Sri Lanka, on a semester abroad. He was having lunch with mother and grandmother, when a suicide bomber walked into the restaurant, and blew himself up. The shrapnel killed Kieran, while his mother and grandmother survived.As a father wrestles with his grief, the man who claimed credit for the Easter day bombings that killed nearly 260 people, is dead. ISIS founder, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, blew himself up after U.S. special operations team cornered him in his compound in Syria this weekend."I am grateful to the U.S. commandos who did their job ... grateful to the armed forces trying to make our world a safer place," said Arrow.While al-Baghdadi claimed credit for the bombings, Sri Lankan authorities believe the suicide bombers were inspired by ISIS, but didn't get any direct aid from them. Arrow says because his son's killers also died that day, he was never consumed by a quest for justice.
