SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - U.S. Coast Guard rescued 13 Mexican nationals from the waters off the coast of La Jolla Saturday.The rescue, located near the Children's Pool, was reported just before 8 a.m., according to the Coast Guard. The 13 individuals, one woman and 12 men, were rescued from a panga boat and brought to shore.Border Patrol officials took the individuals into custody and officials believe they were trying to enter the country illegally.RELATED: One person hurt, possible drug packages found after boat washes ashore in CarlsbadPanga boat attempts to illegally have seen a sharp increased since 2010, according to Border Patrol, as land borders have tightened.Just last month, one person was found injured around several packages of marijuana washed ashore in Carlsbad. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Where the 5 freeway meets the Coronado Bridge, under the loud noise of cars sits a historic gem, a staple of Barrio Logan, Chicano Park. "It's always growing, new murals, new activities."Vibrant murals, familiar sounds and a sense of community is often what you find and feel. "I think people feel that energy and see those colors and images of faces that are familiar to them." For 50 years, Chicano Park has united people of all backgrounds including hispanics, african-americans, latinos, and chicanos, in particular. "We like to clarify that we're more than that. Yes, we have spanish heritage but we also have native american and indigenous heritage," said Beatrice Zamora-Aguilar. Aguilar is an author, teacher and member of Chicano Park's steering committee. Her first visit to the park was in the late 1970's. "That was an eye-opening and exciting event, to see so many aspects of my culture in one place. Music, dance, speakers, mural art, paintings, and low riders. It was so many different parts of my culture all in one place being embraced in one celebration." Since then, she's become a part of the park's roots."It's a place we come together sometimes to take action on various issues through the community." But little do people know she said, Chicano Park almost didn't exist. "The story goes Mario Solis is walking through the neighborhood and sees these big construction equipment." She said Solis alerted everyone he could, and together they created a human chain to stop the city from building what would've been a highway patrol substation. This was after thousands of chicanos in the neighborhood were already displaced after zoning changes and factories were built. "They occupied land for 12 days and then started to talk with city officials about fulfilling their promise to build a park for the community." That story lives on through those who were there and now in a children's book by Aguilar. "Children need to understand places and landmarks they take for granted didn't just happen, it took people coming together who really cared about creating something for the children and future." The book titled 'The Spirit of Chicano Park'."Many of those elders have passed on now and I believe they leave a little bit of their energy and love in that park and that's what you feel." 2336

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Victims in a vehicle vandalism spree in Lakeside are hopeful for a break in the case, after the teen vandals apparently recorded and shared their exploits.From a broken side mirror and a cracked sunroof to the green-colored graffiti, Stephanie Starkey's Tuesday night discovery was painful."I cried. It hurt. I love my car," said Starkey.Starkey says she had taken 2011 Hyundai Sonata into a mechanic, who parked it on Woodside Avenue. Along that street, at least three other vehicles were spray-painted and one car was keyed. Some of that vandalism played out on cellphone video. Deputies say they're looking over an 8-second video, which has been shared on Instagram, showing a teen smashing Starkey's car several times with a skateboard. In the video, several voices can be heard laughing. "Can't even describe the feeling of emptiness. A hurt, broken feeling. I'm getting ready for a new job. Now I have no way to get to work ... It's obviously something they get an adrenaline rush out of ... Disgusted. Kids with nothing better to do," said Starkey.Deputies say they have not yet made an arrest. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While enjoying a moment at the park over the weekend, a Carlsbad family was on the receiving end of an act of kindness from a stranger. The family says they are now hoping to find that person to say thank you.After months of staying at home, the family was excited to spend a day at Buccaneer Park in Oceanside. Eleven-year-old Jacobi and 12-year-old Jordan couldn’t wait to get outside.“They’re too old of the playground area, the swings and things like that,” says mom Tamara Coronado. “They look forward to the open space, the grass area, and definitely the basketball courts.”But Coronado says park officials had not yet reinstalled the basketball hoops, something the boys were looking forward to. The kids were left to make up their own games. It caught the attention of one man.“Forty-five minutes to an hour later, he came back… with a crafting reef from Dollar Tree and a very small basketball that would fit inside.”The man used a power drill to attach the wreath to a tree to form a makeshift hoop so that the boys could play basketball.“All that he asked was that we leave the wreath and the ball in place so that after we left, other families could use it,” says Coronado. “But the fact that he went out of his way like he did was, I just couldn’t believe it.”The mom says even though a lot is going on around the country, she wants others to know there are still kind people in the world. The family didn’t get the man’s name, but they’re hoping to find him to say thank you.“He may have not thought twice about it, and hasn’t thought about it since, but he really touched me and my family.” 1632
