BEIJING, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Authorities are planning to build 20 underground flood pools in downtown Beijing to improve the Chinese capital's flood-control capacity after a devastating rainstorm killed 79 people last month.
Typhoon Haikui, which made landfall early Wednesday morning in east China's Zhejiang province, has destroyed 7,561 houses and 388,180 hectares of cropland in Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Anhui provinces, and Shanghai, according to a statement on the website of the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.
China hopes all relevant sides will respect China's maritime rights, such as freedom of navigation, the statement said.

The center maintained a rainstorm alert this morning, as heavy rains or rainstorms are expected to hit regions in Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hunan, Guangxi, Guizhou, Yunnan and Sichuan provinces.
