SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The former head of the Poway Unified School District appeared in court Monday for a preliminary hearing on five felony charges.Officials charged John Collins with misappropriating and misuse of public money.The complaint accuses Collins of misappropriation of public money dealing with vacation time and sick leave. Poway Unified fired Collins in 2017 after a scathing audit had alleged he received more than 0,000 in overpayments and unauthorized payments.The audit also claims there were an additional ,000 in other transactions that violated district policy and some questionable purchases for airline tickets, dinners and hotel fees.Collins attorney did not respond to 10News request for a comment, but in the past, Collins denied engaging in conduct that was dishonest.If convicted on all charges, Collins could face more than seven years behind bars. 894

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The door-to-door salesman accused of taking swings at a Pacific Beach woman and a string of threatening outbursts while canvassing neighborhoods is behind bars.An arrest warrant was issued on Dec. 6, 2019, for 45-year-old Corey Lamont Terry on felony charges of making criminal threats and attempted burglary, according to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office. According to San Diego Police, Terry was arrested by Sheriff's deputies on Jan. 9. He is currently being held on 0,000 bail.RELATED: Woman records confrontation with man claiming to be charity worker Police had been investigating Terry since November 2019 after several San Diegans complained of his aggressive language while he solicited money door-to-door, SDPD Lt. Shawn Takeuchi told 10News. Terry had reportedly been visiting neighborhoods in Pacific Beach and Ocean Beach, claiming to be raising money for charity.Several people told 10News he would become aggressive when he was denied donations."He chases me across the street, screaming that he's going to kill me," Sarah Jarzabek told 10News. "Scared to death, honestly."Jarzabek recorded video of a confrontation with Terry on Nov. 2, 2019. SDPD positively identified the man who reportedly swung at Jarzabek as Terry. He was detained and questioned the next day, but ultimately released.“It’s a little bit concerning he’s still out there,” said John Christenson, an Ocean Beach resident who said he encountered Terry on Oct. 16, 2019. “Basically said that he did want to knock me out, was getting in my face, calling me all kinds of names. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The nation's first kitten nursery, established in San Diego, is celebrating its tenth season running.San Diego Humane Society's kitten nursery has cared for more than 10,000 underage, orphaned, and otherwise kittens in need around-the-clock for the last decade, according to the Society.Currently, the nursery has more than 100 orphaned kittens."We are in kitten season," Jackie Noble, with the Humane Society, said. "We usually get two big peaks ... usually goes with the weather. As the weather gets warmer, more kittens are born and that's when we see the majority of our kittens come through the doors."And as Mother's Day nears, prospective owners are searching for lovable kittens to call their own."Yes everyone wants a kitten. We're getting a lot of people asking if they can adopt these babies." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The FDA Wednesday gave emergency approval to a San Diego company's test for COVID-19 antibodies.Easy Check, from Truvian Sciences, can test for COVID-19 antibodies in under 10 minutes."They've now given us the right to market the product and sell the product as a safe and effective solution for this type of testing," said Truvian President and CEO Jeff Hawkins.The test uses a drop of blood on a testing strip. Within 10 minutes, it shows a marking on the strip that indicates if you have the antibodies or not.Hawkins said these kinds of tests are vital to the future of the coronavirus pandemic."This type of testing, today, is helping us understand how many people had an infection," said Hawkins. "Over time, this type of testing may help us understand how long that vaccine is good for and how long you are protected.He added, "Using these very deployable, simple tests to monitor this is one way we can track people over time and see how this evolves."The Easy Check test went through independent testing by four separate laboratories. They found it is 99% accurate in detecting both the presence of the COVID-19 antibody and identifying it among other antibodies.Right now, the test requires a full blood draw, but Truvian is working on a version of the test that only needs a finger prick.Hawkins said his company will sell it to medical labs and offices for per test, keeping it affordable for patients who want to take the test, although individual tests may cost more to help doctors and labs cover their costs."Our core mission as a company before COVID was to make testing more accessible and make testing less expensive," said Hawkins. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The City of San Diego released Friday body-worn camera video and hundreds of pages of documents related to a 2018 officer-involved shooting. Raul Rivera was shot and killed by police on Hollister Street and Tocayo Avenue in May 2018 after police say he came at them with a knife. The new documents show police collected 28 9mm cartridge casings, nine bean bag cartridge casings, and four Taser cartridges from the scene. At one point, the video shows police tasing Rivera. He appears to rip off the barbs and continued to struggle. After several minutes, the violent scene comes to an end when police shoot and kill Rivera. They say he charged them with a knife. The San Diego County District Attorney's office did not bring charges against any of the three officers who fired.The report noted, "law enforcement officers were confronted by an agitated subject who was armed with a knife and was under the influence of narcotics. Mr. Rivera urged officers to shoot him as he advanced toward them."  At the time of the shooting, family members told 10News Rivera was in a bad mental state and wished the police had helped him, not hurt him. On Friday Rivera's sister told Team 10 investigator Adam Racusin she was too shaken to talk about the loss of her brother. She would only say that she loves him and is disappointed in the way police have handled things to this point.  1495
