SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- With the drop of a banner, the Rock Church replaced the old sign of the Body Shop Strip Club purchased by the church.The church says they’re unsure what they’ll do with the building, but Thursday, they made it clear it’s no longer a strip club.It was quite the presentation, dozens of people, a stage and a sound system. The announcement the church made yesterday officially unveiled Thursday.RELATED: Rock Church buys former strip club in Midway DistrictWith Pastor Miles McPherson leading the charge, a Rock Church banner draped over the sign of the former strip club. “I’m very excited for what this won’t be, and how we can help the girls moving forward,” McPherson said. The church and several investors brought the club and its license for .2 million.Councilmember Lorie Zapf said the move is the beginning of a new future for the Midway with a vision of parks, families and a new welcoming look. “Midway is no longer going to be the red light district of yesteryear.”The problem with the plan, however, is the building sits just feet away from another strip club. “They started harassing me in April, I was called about 15 times by their broker,” said Kathleen Morgan, who owns Les Girls Theater.“It’s easy to stigmatize this type of business. But we don’t even have male bouncers, we don’t even serve alcohol, we’re old school burlesque,” Morgan said.On stage Thursday, was a pledge to take over Morgan’s place. “I’m hoping that they can acquire the property next door. Once the Midway plan is approved, they’ll be able to plan for the future of what’s allowed here by the zoning,” Zapf said.Morgan says investors are trying to driver her out. The church says they aren’t involved in that. “That’s something that will have to take its own course, we’re not necessarily pushing that,” said McPherson.Morgan also says the business has been vandalized recently, adding if she sells, it won’t be to the church. “In 50 years we’ve never had this type of vandalism, we’ve never had these types of issues. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With unemployment near record lows through Labor Day, efforts are shifting from helping San Diegans get jobs to helping them land better ones.The San Diego Workforce Partnerships is teaming up with local employers to offer on-the-job training to workers so they can get certified and move up in their careers. The focus is currently on so-called middle-skill occupations, those that require something more than a high school diploma but less than a four-year degree. The state Employment Development Department says the five most in-demand middle-skill occupations in San Diego and Imperial Counties are accounting assistants, teacher assistants, medical assistants, heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers, and nursing assistants. The EDD says there are currently 2,500 openings for those positions. The Workforce Partnership recently teamed up with First Promise Care Service in El Cajon to offer its caregivers a two- to three-month certification program to become certified nursing assistants. "It does motivate because they know they're not just going to be there," said Dyna Jones, CEO of First Promise. "There's actually a promotion. There's growth, and people are looking for something like that."Jones said caregivers who complete the program could go from earning per hour to as much as as a team lead if they stay with the company. The Workforce Partnership has a new tool for San Diegans to look up information on different jobs, what they pay, and training requirements and opportunities. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — When the pandemic forced San Diego's breweries to close, many turned to canning in order to continue selling their brews.Virginia Morrison, CEO and co-founder of Second Chance Beer Company, told ABC 10News anchor Lindsey Pena canned beers is now the majority of their revenue."For us, that's really our only revenue stream now," Morrison said, adding that there was already a shift in popularity from glass to cans. "We've been putting out more cans since COVID than we've ever done before. We used to have maybe three or four releases, now I think at one point we had 14 cause that's all we can do. Every bit of beer we're making we're putting in cans."Now, the aluminum supply is having a hard time keeping up with demand. Morrison said a couple of weeks ago, the Brewers Association warned members of an aluminum can shortage.Morrison said the manufacturers her brewery works with are still able to fulfill orders, but she's unsure for how much longer."We need to know and plan and also work with them really closely to figure out how to minimally impact both our businesses," said Morrison.The Aluminum Association said in a statement, "The aluminum beverage can manufacturing industry has seen unprecedented demand for this environmentally-friendly container prior to and especially during the COVID-19 pandemic."But according to the Can Manufacturer's Institute, aluminum isn't in short supply, but can makers are struggling to keep up with the demand.To make matters worse for Second Chance and other local companies, they're competing for the same supply big beverage makers use. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two new studies published this week suggest people with blood type O have a lower likelihood of catching COVID-19 and developing severe illness than people with other blood types.Blood type is a characteristic we inherit from our parents and there are four major blood groups: A, B, AB and O.Danish researchers looked at nearly 500,000 people who tested positive for COVID-19 and found that people with type O were underrepresented.In a study published in the journal Blood Advances, the researchers found 38.4 percent of those infected had type O when that type actually makes up 41.7 percent of the population in that area.The researchers say the findings suggest people with type O are less likely to get infected in the first place.On the other hand, the team found that people with type A blood were overrepresented: 44.4 percent of those infected had type A compared to an expected value of 42.4 percent. The researchers suggest people with type A might be more at risk.Another study, also published in Blood Advances, looked at 95 critically ill patients in Canada. They found people with type O or type B blood tended to have a shorter stay in the intensive care unit, an average of nine days for those blood types compared to 13.5 days for people with type A or AB.They also reported that people with type O or type B were less likely to need a ventilator, with 61 percent of cases requiring mechanical ventilation compared to 84 percent for people with blood type A or AB.“Yes, there may be some of these associations. I don't think it's fully understood at this point,” said Dr. Christian Ramers of Family Health Centers of San Diego, who was not involved in the studies.The science on COVID-19 risk and blood type is mixed. These two new studies align closely with a previous study in China and another in Europe, but a third study in the U.S. found no significant link between severe COVID cases and blood type.At this point, doctors aren’t sure why blood type might affect outcomes with the disease, but there are several theories.“The immune system is an incredibly mysterious and complicated thing that we don't fully understand,” Ramers said. “Blood type sort of plays into that because people with different blood types actually have slightly different immune systems and immune responses.”Your blood type impacts the kind of antibodies you produce. That is why it is so important in blood transfusions to get the right blood type; blood from the wrong donor can trigger antibodies that attack those red blood cells.People with blood type O have two sets of antibodies, known as anti-A antibody and anti-B antibody. People with type A or B only have one or the other.Researchers in the Canadian study hypothesized that the anti-A antibody in particular may help control the coronavirus. People with blood type O and blood type B produce this kind of antibody. Individuals with type A or type AB do not.People with blood type O also have characteristics that make them less prone to issues with blood clotting, a major issue in severe cases of COVID-19.Experts say that if type O blood is protective against the virus, it’s not by a large amount.And this protective benefit doesn’t extend to all pathogens. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – With nearly a dozen casinos in San Diego County, a local gaming expert says the region has become oversaturated creating too much competition.This is forcing the county's gaming resorts to focus less on gambling and more towards becoming an entertainment destination to help drive revenues.Others are laying off staff.The news comes amid a string of critical headlines targeting some local casinos.RELATED: Controversial 0M Jamul casino opens its doors, creates traffic problems in area?Last week, the developers and operators of Hollywood Casino declared in a filing that it was pulling out of a contract with the Jamul Indian Village, citing nearly million in losses. The Pala Casino Resort and Spa also confirmed that there will be layoffs, citing pressure from an increasingly competitive casino market in Southern California.Longtime gaming expert Dave Palermo says with the addition of the Hollywood Casino, the market just got very competitive for San Diego County’s 10 casinos.RELATED: Sycuan Casino breaks ground on new hotel and resort expansion?As far as the overall gaming market in the state, Palermo says it’s holding pretty steady with annual gaming revenues increasing about five percent.
