CINCINNATI — A group of images meant to sell matching sets of Macy's festive family pajamas migrated onto Twitter this week, where they were presented as part of the company's holiday ad campaign and criticized for their depiction of the group's only black family. The images appear to depict four separate families: Two mixed-race, one all-white (with a fluctuating number of children, depending on the picture) and one all-black. The all-black family is the only one depicted with a single parent -- a mother with three sons. Some, including online activist Tariq Nasheed and Cincinnati Councilman Jeff Pastor, felt the picture played on stereotypes of black families, single mothers and what a Washington Post columnist once called "the dangerous myth of the missing black father." 807

(KGTV) - Chula Vista Police are asking the public for help solving three hit-and-run cases that have remained unsolved since January of last year — two of which resulted in deaths.The first occurred on Jan. 22, 2017, at about 6:45 p.m. at the intersection of Broadway and G Street. Police said 43-year-old Rafael Cruz Fermin was hit by a vehicle traveling southbound on Broadway. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene in what was described as a red, 2002-2005 Ford Explorer or Mercury Mountaineer.Fermin died at the scene, despite being given first aid. Read more.The second incident was on Sept. 14, 2017, at about 7:30 p.m. in the 700 block of E Street. A driver struck a 52-year-old man between the McDonald's and Motel 6, before fleeing the area. The victim was left with severe internal injuries, of which police say he still suffers from.The driver, described as a possibly older, white man with short white or blonde hair, was last seen in a gold, older model Pontiac, Lincoln, or Buick. The vehicle has a partial plate of "5BK." Read more.The third hit-and-run was on Jan. 4, 2018, at about 7 p.m. in the 1500 block of Third Ave. A vehicle traveling northbound on Third Ave. hit a 94-year-old man. The man was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.The driver, described as a man wearing a red baseball cap, was last seen driving a white, early model SUV, police said. (KGTV) — It’s a United States census year and so far, census numbers are not where they should be for San Diego, so Chula Vista leaders held a “week of action” to try to increase numbers.San Diego County has reported a 67.7% response rate compared to 68% in 2010. The goal is to surpass the 2010 numbers and hit 70% this year.Angelica Davis with the City of Chula Vista said they had planned many outreach events to connect with the community, but coronavirus has made that difficult, so they’ve had to find new ways to encourage people to fill out the census in a safe way.The final day of the week, residents could attend a drive-through event where the first 50 cars got whole pizzas and everyone was entered to win prizes and bikes. Anyone who came had access to translators, technology, and people who could answer questions.Davis said these resources are crucial in the Chula Vista community, especially with a push this year for 80% of participants to do the census online.“Not everybody has access to wireless or devices to be able to do it online,” she said.She also said many people in the Chula Vista community are worried about how their information will be used. Of the nine questions on the census, none of them ask about citizenship status and all responses remain private.“The information that gets obtained by the census cannot be taken by other reporting agencies, it’s all confidential,” said Davis.Davis said another problem is that people don’t realize what the census does, so they don’t bother to do it.”We’ve actually had people ask well what is the census, and I don’t think they make that connection that with that data, they determine where the funding is needed, where it needs to go,”The more people who live in a community, the more funding they’ll get, and that funding goes toward resources like rental assistance and food programs, which she said have all been needed the past few months with coronavirus.The U.S. Census Bureau is scheduled to start door knocks to encourage census participation in August. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The city of Chula Vista is hoping "Granny Flats" will help ease the county's affordable housing crisis. Tuesday night, the city council unanimously voted to approve a series of changes designed to make it cheaper and easier to apply for a permit to build a granny flat or "accessory dwelling unit." The ordinance brings the city into state compliance. California lawmakers passed a measure last year loosening the regulation and reducing some fees associated with building. Chula Vista added a regulation aimed at preventing the units from becoming short-term vacation rentals. Under Chula Vista's ordinance, the homeowner must live on the property. Max Zaker owns a real estate company in Eastlake. He's also running for Chula Vista City Council. He said the city must find a way to keep up with its growth. "The average price for a two-bedroom condo is about ,700 to ,800 a month, so imagine a kid right out of college, they just got their first job. There's no way they're going to be able to afford it. So, if there was a granny flat they could stay at home," said Zaker. The new rules also eliminate parking requirements in some cases. If the property is located within half a mile from a public transit stop, the homeowner is no longer required to provide parking. "The whole idea is to make these affordable and less cumbersome and less excessive requirements," said Michael Walker, Chula Vista's senior planner. Walker estimates the reduction in fees could be a savings of roughly ,500. On average, the city only gets roughly 10 permit applications a month. City leaders hope that will change with the relaxed rules. "We are hoping this will encourage other types of residential development to happen in Chula  Vista so we can increase our housing stock because we have to," said Zaker. A second reading is required before the ordinance is officially passed. The new rules are expected to go into effect in May.  2109

It's the first of its kind, replicating a 1950's town with storefronts and interactive activities.The nonprofit George G. Glenner Alzheimer's Family Centers is behind the new facility, called Glenner Town Square.The indoor, simulated urban environment uses reminiscence therapy to help those with Alzheimer's and dementia, bringing people back to a time where their memories are strongest.Glenner Center's Lisa Tyburski says while the memories experienced at the center don't last forever, they bring patients joy in the moment."They'll leave tired, they'll have had a good day," said Tyburski. "It helps in the evening with sleep, which of course will help with mood the next day."After an assessment with the facility, caregivers can drop off loved ones at the center.Services range from for a full day and per half day. The facility opens in April and will operate Monday through Friday from 8:45 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. 1029
