(KGTV) - A U.S. Marine and a young woman were arrested Wednesday for the death of a man whose remains were found in Joshua Tree National Park.Curtis Krueger, 30, was taken into custody near Twentynine Palms Air-Ground Combat Center. Ashlie Stapp, 27, was arrested on the campus of Copper Mountain Community College in Joshua Tree, KABC reported.Investigators said Krueger and Stapp killed 54-year-old Henry Stange. His partially covered remains were found June 2 in a shallow grave in Joshua Tree National Park.The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department determined the crime scene was located in the city of Murrieta.Police did not immediately announce a connection between the two suspects or a motive for Stange’s death.Krueger and Stapp are charged with Homicide and Conspiracy. 810

MONROE COUNTY, Penn. -- Punxsutawney Phil is a wanted mammal, and Pennsylvania law enforcement officials allege his crime is "deception."On Groundhog Day, Phil saw his shadow, declaring to the world there’d be six more weeks of winter.The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office issue is simple, according to the wanted poster posted on Facebook: It's been more than six weeks since his prediction, and snow's still falling.Phil said winter would be over by March 16, but by the second day of spring, the county was in the middle of “yet another snowstorm.”For those on the lookout, Phil is a 22-inch-long male, weighing around 20 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A Nashville author shared a beautiful example of confronting racial bias.Carlos Whittaker says he formed a bias against his neighbor who has a large American flag draped on his front door and two white bunny statues in his front yard.In the four years the two have been neighbors, Whittaker says the neighbor in his 70s never acknowledged him, even when he waved, smiled or shouted “morning.”"My racial bias thought this old, white man who ignored me, with an American flag hanging in front of his door, in the Deep South, didn't like brown people," said Whittaker. "That's a bias that I had. We all have biases, right." On Monday, Whittaker says he spotted the man walk out his front door with a can of paint and he proceeded to paint one of his white bunnies black. The sight brought Whittaker to tears.“For the next 12 hours I was trying to come up with 1,000 other reasons why he painted that bunny black,” wrote Whittaker on Instagram. “Besides the reason my gut was telling me.”So, when Whittaker spotted his neighbor in his driveway the next day, he walked across the street to ask him why he painted the statue. The man said he was trying to “gently” show his support for the African America community, “with the motivation of what’s going on in the country.”According to Whittaker, the small act of kindness was his neighbor's way of saying black lives matter, because he couldn't go downtown to the protests. Whittaker proceeded to tell his neighbor that he’s trying to help his friends realize that we all can develop some form of racial bias against others.“There’s this thing called racial bias that I’m trying to help my friends understand that they have,” said Whittaker to the man. “Whereas, someone like me that travels full-time for a living will normally have a bias that says, ‘oh look it’s an older white gentleman with an American flag up on his door,’ that my bias automatically says, ‘he may not like me.’”Whittaker went on to express his gratitude for the neighbor’s kind act and then he apologized.“I just wanted to tell you that I’m so grateful and that I apologize if I ever assumed anything, because that’s one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen,” said Whittaker to the neighbor.Whittaker posted the touching moment with his neighbor to social media, encouraging others to have uncomfortable conversations and to admit their own biases.“Protests may change policy,” wrote Whitaker. “But conversations change communities.” 2486

NEAR CALIENTE, Nevada — Two single-engine planes collided Thursday afternoon while trying to contain a wildfire near Caliente, Nev., according to the Federal Aviation Administration.KTNV in Las Vegas, reports the collision occurred at about 1 p.m. MT between two Air Tractor AT8T airplanes. They were deployed to help battle the Bishop Fire, burning about 17 miles from Caliente and more than two hours northeast of Las Vegas.Officials say one person was aboard each aircraft at the time of the crash, and the Bureau of Land Management later confirmed the pilots died in the collision.“We offer our sincere condolences to the families of the two pilots and to all those working with the BLM Nevada Ely District,” said BLM Nevada State Director Jon Raby.Ground and aerial resources continued to take on the Bishop Fire in Rainbow Canyon as of Thursday afternoon, with the blaze approximately 500 acres.The airplanes involved are used to support firefighters on the ground and can deliver up to 800 gallons of fire retardant and operate in areas where larger air tankers cannot, according to the BLM. 1106

MINERAL WELLS, Texas – A young bull rider has died after being bucked off a bull during a competition in Texas.Rowdy Lee Swanson of Duncan, Oklahoma, passed away Thursday due to injuries sustained while competing at the Palo Pinto County Livestock Association’s PRCA Rodeo in Mineral Wells, according to the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Rowdy Swanson at the ProRodeo in Mineral Wells, Texas,” PRCA CEO George Taylor said. “The hearts of the entire rodeo community go out to Rowdy’s family in this tragic time. We will continue to keep Rowdy and his family in our thoughts and prayers.”The 20-year-old was a student at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater and was studying animal sciences.Swanson was part of the university’s rodeo team.
