TOKYO, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Officials from the Chinese Embassy in Japan have visited the Chinese fishermen illegally detained by the Japanese authorities last week in the East China Sea.The Chinese government and people care very much about their living and security conditions in captivity, officials from the embassy in Tokyo and the consulate general in Fukuoka told the crew members.Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and other senior diplomats have for several times lodged solemn representations with the Japanese side and protested the detention of the Chinese fishermen, they said.Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo summoned Japanese ambassador Uichiro Niwa early Sunday morning and demanded the immediate release of the Chinese fishermen and their boat. Dai urged Japan to avoid any misjudgment of the situation and to make a "wise political resolution."Dai was the highest-ranking Chinese official to make a public response after the fishing boat and its crew were seized.The Chinese embassy officials learned in detail the crew members' physical and mental conditions, bought food, fresh water and medicines for them, and contacted their families.The officials told the crew members that the Chinese government was sparing no effort in urging the Japanese side to release them, and asked them to keep good health and calmness, support the Chinese government's work and have confidence that the government can properly handle the issue as quickly as possible.The Chinese Embassy in Tokyo is continuing to make representations with the Japanese authorities, demanding the immediate and unconditional release of the crew members and their boat.

TIANJIN, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations' chief climate change negotiator applauded China on Monday for its efforts in dealing with the challenge of climate change, saying she was impressed by the determination of the Chinese people and their government.Christiana Figueres, executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change(UNFCCC), made the remarks in China's northern city of Tianjin at a welcoming reception held by the Chinese government.A new round of UN climate talks is being held in the port city on Oct. 4-9 in preparation for the year-end Cancun summit in Mexico."Here in Tianjin, I have seen much evidence of determination," said Figueres."(I saw the) determination of the government of China to reduce their CO2 emissions per unit of GDP by up to 45 percent by 2020, (and the) determination of the people of China to turn China into the world's leader in renewable energy technology and to find a visionary balance among economic development, poverty eradication and climate protection."Figueres also praised the host city, saying, "(I saw the) determination of the government of Tianjin, China's fourth-largest city, to be a model city for the circular economy, a pilot city for low-carbon growth and an exemplary city for sustainable development.""A striking example is the Tianjin Eco-City project between Singapore and China and with significant private sector investment, which will provide eco-friendly housing for some 350,000 people," she added.More than 3,000 delegates from 177 parties and observer states and over 200 non-governmental organizations are attending the Tianjin gathering, the final one prior to the United Nations Climate Change Conference to be held in Cancun at the end of this year.Figueres concluded her speech at the reception with a Chinese proverb, "Zhong Zhi Cheng Cheng," which means "With everyone's determination, we can do anything." She also urged all the participants to make concerted efforts to reach a consensus during the climate talks.  

CHANGCHUN, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Economic cooperation and investment among northeast Asia countries is accelerating, a senior trade official of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) said Thursday in Changchun, capital of northeast China's Jilin Province."Northeast Asia has the advantages of modern technology, abundant natural resources and huge markets, which lays a solid foundation for common prosperity through cooperation," Koo Bon-Tai, vice trade minister of the DPRK, said at the Sixth Northeast Asia Investment and Trade Expo.Northeast Asia plays an important role promoting regional development, prosperity and security, said Xie Zhenhua, vice minister of China's National Development and Reform Commission.He added that the development of the Greater Tumen Initiative (GTI) will become a new growth point for China and northeast Asia."All mining, communication and infrastructure projects approved by the Mongolian government are related to the development of northeast Asia," said Noroviin Altanhuyag, the first deputy prime minister of Mongolia.According to Chen Weigen, Vice Governor of Jilin Province, the sixth Northeast Asia Expo will showcase Changchun, Jilin and the Tumen River and attract domestic and overseas enterprises to join regional development and cooperation in the Tumen River area.The Expo began Thursday in Changchun, which attracted 50,000 businessmen from home and abroad, including those from 110 of the world's top 500 companies.

HANOI, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- China and Vietnam vowed to promote healthy, stable and long-term development of bilateral ties with the guideline of "long-term stability, future-orientation, good-neighborliness and comprehensive cooperation," according to a joint press communique issued here on Monday by the two defense ministries.The two countries vowed to advance bilateral comprehensive strategic and cooperative partnership and always be good neighbors, friends, comrades and partners, according to the joint communique issued on the occasion of Chinese State Councilor and Defense Minister Liang Guanglie' s visit to Vietnam.According to the communique, China and Vietnam will continue to strengthen defense cooperation to promote military ties and bilateral relations.The two sides agreed to maintain the fine tradition of exchanging high-level military delegations and give full play to the bilateral defense and security consultation mechanism, said the communique.China and Vietnam are committed to settling all disputes though peaceful means and safeguarding regional peace and stability, said the communique.The two countries reiterated to enhance coordination and interaction in multilateral forums like United Nations and ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting Plus (ADMM-Plus), an enlarged ADMM with participation of eight dialogue partners, according to the communique.China and Vietnam also expressed the willingness to deepen cooperation in tackling non-traditional security challenges under the framework of ADMM-Plus and deepen cooperation in humanitarian efforts like disaster relief, said the communique.Liang arrived in Vietnam on Sunday for an official and friendly visit. TEHRAN, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Li Changchun, a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC), on Tuesday visited the Confucius Institute at Tehran University, where he encouraged the Iranian students to constantly improve their Chinese level and become professional translators to make contributions to bilateral relations.Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, told the Iranian students in the institute that he was moved by their strong interest in learning Chinese.While presenting some Chinese culture-experiencing equipment and books to the institute, Li, who is on an official visit to Iran, said he hopes the institute can use these books and equipment to promote its Chinese-teaching capacities.President of Tehran University Farhad Rahbar said the Confucius Institute has been playing a very important role in promoting Chinese teaching in Iran and boosting bilateral cultural cooperation, adding that the university is willing to further boost cultural and educational cooperation between the two countries.Li also watched performances about Chinese martial arts, poetry recitation and Chinese lion dance by the Iranian students in the Confucius Institute.After visiting Confucius Institute at Tehran University, Li went to the site of Metro line 4 in Tehran, which was jointly constructed by Iran and China.Li said the operation of the Metro line 4 is a product of the bilateral economic and trade exchanges, and he hopes that with joint efforts by the two sides the Metro line 4 can be turned into a line of friendship and cooperation between the two sides."I hope more achievements about our cooperation can be acquired in the future," he added.The Confucius Institute, the first in Iran, is co-founded by Yunnan University of China and Tehran University. It was officially opened in Tehran on Jan. 1, 2009.Iran is the last leg of Li's four-nation tour which has taken him to Estonia, Montenegro and Ireland.
