SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club has canceled its racing program this weekend, July 17-19. The cancellation follows 15 jockeys recently testing positive for COVID-19. Racing is slated to resume July 24."Assuming these individuals continue to show no symptoms, they will be isolated for a total of 10 days and should be able to resume their usual activities, including riding after that time,” said Dr. Eric McDonald, Medical Director, Epidemiology & Immunizations Services, County of San Diego.Racing at the track is set to return on July 24.The 15 jockeys who tested positive are believed to be asymptomatic, officials said. “Contact tracing procedures are underway in conjunction with the San Diego Health & Human Services Agency. However, a common factor among all but one of the riders that tested positive is that they rode at the recently concluded Los Alamitos meet.”The track ordered testing of all jockeys after two riders, Flavien Prat and Victor Espinoza, tested positive for COVID-19.Espinoza, who rode American Pharaoh to horse racing’s Triple Crown in 2015, spoke about his coronavirus diagnosis earlier this week on “The Winner’s Circle” podcast.Espinoza told podcast host Bram Weinstein that he took a COVID-19 test on July 7 and did not go to Del Mar’s opening weekend because he did not receive his results until July 10.The famed jockey described his symptoms as body aches and join pain, but he did not have a cough, fever or shortness of breath."It's different from a cold. Tuesday at 5 o'clock, it hit me hard for two hours. The next day I wake up normal like nothing happened. I feel fine ... The following day, my body starts hurting, every joint in my body, especially my legs, every joint from my hip to my ankles. And there's not much I can do, anything,” Espinoza told Weinstein.Espinoza added, "I've been in quarantine since March. I've been so careful to take care of myself, and it was one of those little things; you let your guard down, I went to Los Alamitos and that was it.”"Honestly, I can speak from my experience, I don't wish nobody to have this disease. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Tens of thousands of unemployed San Diegans are about to see the biggest chunk of their income disappear. That's because the extra 0 in weekly unemployment payments from the Federal Government are expiring this month. The loss will reduce the maximum weekly unemployment paymeny to the 0 that comes from the state. City Heights resident Abby Heilbron is about to see her weekly checks go from ,050 to 0. Heilbron, whose husband is still working full time, said a dozen of her friends moved out of San Diego during the pandemic, unable to afford the region's high cost of living."And it is going to be a really scary time for a lot of people here, very quickly," Heilbron said. The extra 0 was part of the Federal stimulus package passed by Congress and the president in late March. The state Employment Development Department says the payments will end July 25. Whether to extend the benefits is now a political issue on Capitol Hill. The loss of the income comes when San Diego County restaurants are not allowed to serve indoors, meaning one of the area's biggest sectors is not hiring. "I've heard the argument that this gives people the incentive not to work, but the problem is that there are fewer alternatives for those people to go work at," said Alan Gin, an economist at the University of San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Coronado Police Department released an image Monday of a vehicle that may be related to BB gun incidents in Coronado Sunday. 10news has learned five people were struck in the downtown area. Police spent the morning scouring the ground near State Street and West Broadway. An officer told 10news four people were crossing State Street late Saturday night or early Sunday evening when three of them were hit. The extent of their injuries are unknown. At the corner of L Street and Sixth Avenue in the East Village, a woman was shot in the arm early Sunday morning, according to San Diego Police. She was walking in a small group and one of the men was an exhibitor at Comic Con, staying at the Omni Hotel, where they were headed before the shooting. The early morning shooting was not the only one that occurred overnight. In National City and Paradise Hills, at least a dozen cars were hit, and in Coronado, police said at least 23 businesses, homes an cars were struck by BBs.10news brought the image of a white sedan released by Coronado Police to Roman Beck, who has worked as an accident reconstruction expert for two decades."I believe it's a 2005 to 2010 Chrysler 300 sedan. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Students distracted and bitten in class at Madison Senior High in Clairemont are hoping for some help to make the mosquitoes go away.The west side of campus, against Doliva Dr., is where people told 10News they were bitten. The same area houses special needs classes. 10News was sent two pictures, one of a student, with special needs, whose calf was bitten by a mosquito, and another of a dead mosquito. It appears to be black with white spots or stripes."It was really bad and it was burning and everything," Junior Arryonna said. She was bitten in art class Thursday."I feel like my ankle starts itching so I'm like what's on my ankle, so I look and I got two bumps on the side of my ankle," she said reaching down to scratch. She said she's allergic, making the bites that much worse.The school district says the first report of a mosquito bite came mid-September, around the first time Aryonna said she was bit. Pest Control came out twice and deployed an organic compound in the drain to kill mosquito larvae. The County was scheduled to come out next week, but after 10News called, they showed up Friday afternoon, according to the district. 1176

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The city of San Diego has turned to two community leaders to assist with gang prevention and improve communication between police and the community.Mayor Kevin Faulconer on Tuesday announced the hiring of Rev. Gerald Brown to oversee police-community relations, and Pastor Jesus Sandoval to lead its commission on gang prevention."At age 16 I had been shot and stabbed, didn't think I would make it to 18," said Sandoval, once in a gang himself. "Since then I've been dedicating my life to helping other people."Brown will take over the Citizens Advisory Board on Police-Community relations, which meets monthly at various locations in the city. He said he is already working on arranging for clergy to spend 10 hours a month with police.Brown also wants to make himself accessible to the community and says he will bring concerns directly to the chief of police. "Really focus on how do we bring communities together? How do we bridge that gap, especially when working with African American community and law enforcement, find ways we can seek peace," he said. But some say the city needs to do more. Kate Yavenditti is a member of Women Occupy San Diego, which is seeking more police oversight. She said she has been attending the police-community relations meetings for about two years and hasn't seen many results.She said she would like the groups to be more than just advisory."So they can send recommendations up to the mayor and the mayor doesn't have to make any changes, and that's pretty much what's been happening," she said.The police-community relations board next meets 6 p.m. Monday at the Taylor Branch Library in Pacific Beach.    1706
