VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Between the hustle and bustle of serving hungry customers at Commune in Virginia Beach, you'll find small pops of beauty. That beauty took a new form on Friday when Dan Pew walked through the doors. He was visiting from Ohio with his fiance and said he wanted to spread love and positivity during his time in the Resort City.A few days before vacation, he was scrolling through the social media platform Tik Tok when he came across posts about the Venmo Challenge. It encourages people to give back to their community."You ask your social media followers - [it can be] your friends, your family, or businesses or anybody and you say 'hey if you want to donate through Venmo Challenge tag 'the awesome human being' or 'for the food service worker' and then you donate and then you surprise a food service worker with a tip," Pew said.Pew was inspired by the videos of people surprising waiters and waitresses, so he took the plea to his followers on social media. In a message he said, "We're going to Virginia Beach for vacation this week and we want to surprise a food service worker with a huge tip."After putting the challenge out there, the internet got to work. Pew racked up hundreds of dollars in his Venmo account in just a few days. Then on Friday, after being helped by Aubrey Seykerbuyk at Commune, Pew pulled out 0.Seykerbuyk recalled the moment that made her jaw drop to the ground, "He had like a wad of cash and started counting it out in front of me and I honestly didn't know like what was happening. I didn't know if it was like a social experiment to see if I would take it or not."It was no experiment. The young waitress was nearly brought to tears. She said the act of kindness couldn't have come at a better time. "My vision has been clouded by so much negativity just by everything going on recently and that little glimmer of kindness that I received yesterday was just enough to remind me that there is still good people, there are still good people in this world and we need more of them."Even better, the other servers got a piece of the pie.Chelsey Miller is the front house manager at Commune who was working when the surprise took place."We all tip share so it kinda went to all of us and they didn't even realize that was going to be the case either so it was really awesome," she said. "We're all really grateful to be a part of one of those pay-it-forward things."Miller said the 0 was split between the 5 servers working."They had the means and they decided to help which is all anybody can ask for right now," Seykerbuyk said. Before making his exit from town to share the love elsewhere, Pew said "It's not about me, it's not about the money, it's about the message of spreading positivity and love."Miller said it’s awesome to see people appreciating restaurant workers and helping out after their businesses have been closed down due to COVID-19.This story originally reported by Erin Miller on wtkr.com. 2972

Viewers to Friday’s White House news briefing heard press secretary Kayleigh McEnany claim that Paw Patrol had been canceled.“We saw a few weeks ago that Paw Patrol, a cartoon show about cops, was canceled. COPS was canceled. Live PD was canceled,” McEnany said. "Lego halted sales of their Lego City Police Station. It's really unfortunate."But a Nickelodeon spokesperson refuted that claim Friday afternoon, saying that the show has not been canceled. Also, Lego is still selling Lego City Police Stations on its website.Paw Patrol is a children’s cartoon that shows dogs in rescue situations. The cartoon includes dogs working as police officers, firefighters and other rescue type jobs. The show claims to be the No. 1 ranked TV program for pre-school children. While Live PD and COPS succumbed last month to pressure to cancel amid national unrest over policing and racial injustice, Paw Patrol has remained on the air. There were a few social media posts made that claimed that the show depicts policing in a positive light, and thus should be canceled. The show also caught flack for joining other TV shows in a social media blackout on June 7, which said “muted and listening.”President Donald Trump’s son Eric said that the people who were calling to cancel Paw Patrol are “truly insane.”Besides Paw Patrol remaining on Nickelodeon, the cartoon series is slated to have a full-length movie. The movie is slated for an August 2021 debut. 1450

WASHINGTON (AP) — As coronavirus cases rise in more than half of the states, the Trump administration is urging the Supreme Court to overturn the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as Obamacare. The administration’s high court filing Thursday came the same day the government reported that close to half a million people who lost their health insurance in the economic shutdown to slow the spread of COVID-19 have gotten coverage through HealthCare.gov.The administration’s legal brief makes no mention of the virus. Some 20 million Americans could lose their health coverage and protections for people with preexisting health conditions also would be put at risk if the court agrees with the administration. 716

WARREN, Mich. – A suspect is in custody for the execution-style murders of three people in Michigan, including a 6-year-old boy, his father and the dad’s fiancée.Last Friday, a person of interest in the heinous murder of the child and 28-year-old woman was being questioned by officers, according to Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer.Warren police say they will present their case to the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office Tuesday morning.According to Dwyer, officers did a wellness check at an Otis Avenue home in Warren around 10 a.m. on Oct. 1. The front door was open, but there was no sign of a forced entry. That’s when police discovered the bodies of the boy and woman, both fatally shot execution-style in the basement, Dwyer said.Warren police are working with Detroit police after it was confirmed the 6-year-old victim was the son of a 31-year-old man whose body was found in a burned-out vehicle on Detroit’s east side. The 28-year-old woman is the girlfriend, police confirmed.According to Detroit Major Crimes Commander Eric Decker, officers responded to the vehicle fire report around 2 a.m. Further investigation revealed the vehicle was a rental car, which was then used to identify the 31-year-old victim and trace his connection to the home in Warren. The man’s initial cause of death was from a gunshot wound. The vehicle was burned after the shooting.Dwyer said the department has secured video from around the Otis Avenue neighborhood, which will be later released. Authorities have also executed a search warrant on the home and have recovered evidence to test for possible suspect identification.Federal agents are being asked to join the investigation as Warren police anticipate seeking the death penalty in the case.“When you murder an innocent 6-year-old baby, you deserve the death penalty.” Dwyer said. “It was a terrible, terrible scene. Very difficult for the officers who had to process the scene.”Right now, police say it is possible the victims knew the suspect(s), and there is a possibility the motive may be narcotics related.“Let’s bring justice to the family,” Dwyer said. This story was originally published by staff at WXYZ. 2174
