SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It’s no mistake, the Marriott Marquis in Downtown San Diego is playing host to bees on the roof, and it’s all for the benefit of local business. The hive highlights a growing trend called urban beekeeping and the popularity of the practice is creating a lot of buzz. In 2012, the City of San Diego amended its municipal code to allow some residents, along with community gardens and retail farms to keep two beehives. The practice has several benefits, according to the city, including access to fresh, natural honey. The city says urban beekeeping also reduces the number of aggressive Africanized bees in the vicinity of the docile honeybee hive. Beekeeping is also known to reduce carbon footprint due to local production, however, there are some things to be aware of. The primary risk of beekeeping is getting stung. The city says if you plan to keep bees, you can count on bee stings every now and then. Before deciding to keep bees, the City of San Diego urges dialogue with neighbors. Click here for more on beekeeping in San Diego. Tomorrow morning on 10News at 6, Jared Aarons looks into what benefits the bees have downtown as well as some unique concoctions local restaurants are whipping up with the fresh honey. 1254

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Isabel Rosales was brutally attacked and nearly killed by her husband in January 2018."It was life or death, my ex husband attacked me in front of my kids," said Rosales.Rosales was married for 16 years. She and her ex-husband moved from Chicago to San Diego for a fresh start. But Rosales says the abuse only got worse."Sexual abuse, verbal abuse, physical abuse, everything," said RosalesShortly after their 16-year anniversary Rosales told her Ex-husband she wanted a divorce. She barely made it out of the family home alive."I was getting ready to go to work and we had been arguing...his behavior had been kind of erratic over the last few weeks. I thought he was agreeing with me when he said it ends here. I thought he was getting his suitcase and leaving. He followed me into the bathroom and he stabbed me. I ran into the kid's room and he stabbed me in front of the kids who were sleeping. I was able to push him out of the way and I ran out of the house. Before I ran out of the house though he attacked me again at the front door. I knew if I didn't make it out of the door it was over and by the grace of God the door opened."Rosales was in the ICU at UCSD for three days with a breathing tube. She says she fought to stay alive for her three children and her mother, who was killed by her boyfriend in 2011."My mother was murdered by her boyfriend in Mexico. And my ex-husband attacked me in a very similar way."Rosales says she had what her mother did not. Help. Hers came in the form of Operation for Hope, a San Diego non-profit that helps provide emergency services to victims of domestic abuse. Rosales was given emergency shelter and money to pay for a divorce attorney."It helped me have a future. It gave me exactly what it promises- HOPE."Rosales has this advice for other survivors."I was ashamed to ask for help. I didn't know services like this exist. I am here to tell you there's great courage in asking for help and taking that first step... I hope and I pray to change one other person's world out there by sharing my story. My heart aches for those who do not make it like my mom, for those who do not know how to get out or where to go, for those that think an abusive relationship is normal. Anything is possible and each and every person is deserving of a beautiful and safe life... I am happy now. These tears are tears of joy."During the pandemic, domestic violence incidents have increased. From January to June 2020, there were 8,495 domestic violence incidents reported to law enforcement in San Diego County, as compared to 8,235 during the same period in 2019; a 3% increase from the prior year according to the San Diego County District Attorney's office. The Victim Assistance Program advocates at the District Attorney's office served 2,940 victims from March-July 2020, as compared to 1,941 in 2019; a 51% increase in those served.Operation for Hope will hold it's biggest fundraiser of the year October 28, 20202. 10News Anchor Vanessa Van Hyfte will be emceeing the live event and silent auction. All of the money will go directly to benefit victims and survivors of domestic abuse in San Diego County. For more information click here. 3210

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It appears traffic along parts of Normal Street in Hillcrest will disappear for good, giving way to the Normal Street Promenade.City Councilmember Chris Ward says the city has signed on for the project as part of the Uptown Bikeways Project with SANDAG.The east side traffic lanes would stay but the lanes on the west side will be replaced by dedicated bike lanes and a pedestrian walkway along a two-block stretch from the Hillcrest Pride Flag to Lincoln Avenue."I'm excited.  Hillcrest is a close-knit community, and this will make it even more social," said Hillcrest resident Madison Layo."A great gathering space for everyone that people can rally around ... show a little pride," said Alex Craig, another Hillcrest resident.Ward says the public space can host events like the weekly farmer's market and Pride gatherings, along with events such as street fairs, movies and concerts.  The proposal also includes 70 extra parking spaces from Lincoln Avenue to Washington Street.  Supporters believe the project could also attract business activity to the area. The Uptown Community Parking District has allocated .8 million for the project.  Community outreach for the project will begin in early 2019 with construction expected to start in 2020. 1307

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It is a trend that happens around election time—an increase in hate crimes.“The weeks before and after, particularly the presidential elections, we do see a pretty marked increase in hate crimes,” said Leonard Trinh with the hate crime unit at the District Attorney's Office. “In 2016, the two weeks after the election were very busy. In fact, I think the busiest day for hate crimes was the day after the 2016 election. But that was true in 2012 and 2008 and before.”In June, a man was caught on cell phone video punching a Black Lives Matter demonstration in Imperial Beach. The DA’s office filed felony assault and battery charges and hate crime allegations against two men, Jeffrey Brooks and Henry Brooks Jr.In September, the St. Peter’s Chaldean Catholic Cathedral in El Cajon was vandalized with a mix of graffiti. Swastikas, “BLM,” and “Biden 2020” was spray painted on the exterior.Last month, Rabbi Yonatin Helevy said he was attacked by a teenager on a bicycle, who hit him over the head and yelled a racial slur. A 14-year-old was arrested.Trinh said as of Friday, there were 42 potential hate crime cases this year. Six of them were reported in the past few weeks. 17 people have been charged so far.He said they are currently reviewing two more potential hate crime cases that came in this weekend. “We work very with our law enforcement partners and with community leaders,” Trinh said. “We encourage them to report hate crimes and hate incidents whenever they happen.”Trinh said the pandemic has also affected the local Asian-American community. Two hate crime cases were filed in connection to anti-Asian sentiment. In the two previous years, there were no hate crimes filed involving hate against this community.Trinh explained the difference between a hate crime and hate incident.“A hate incident is the use of a racial slur or a homophobic slur or anti-Semitic slur where there’s no threat of violence directed at any person or group of people and no ability to carry out that threat,” Trinh said. A hate crime involves physical harm and actual threats.People should not dismiss hate incidents as harmless, Trinh said.“Those are still concerning because incidents are oftentimes precursors to hate crimes.” Trinh added.Imam Taha Hassane with the Islamic Center said they have seen an increase in reported hate incidents.“We’re working basically at this moment with our local law enforcement to secure our houses of worship,” Hassane said.He said they are preparing for the worst, but hoping for the best.“We don't want people to be at risk or threatened just because of this election,” Hassane said. “The whole world is watching. The whole world is observing and we want to show our civility, our respect to one another, no matter what the result of the election will be.” 2821
