OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- Hundreds showed up early Saturday morning for the Oceanside half-Ironman. The race is a total of 70.3 miles of biking, swimming and running. For one local Camp Pendleton marine, the race meant so much more. Captain John Watkins participated in the Ironman in memory of his daughter, Amelia Mae Watkins, also known as Millie. Millie passed away when she was just 10-years-old from neuroblastoma last year. Since Millie's death, her family raises money to raise awareness about her specific type of cancer. The Watkins raised over ,000 dollars for this race. Ohio State announced that it has canceled its Saturday matchup against Illinois after head coach Ryan Day tested positive for the coronavirus, OSU announced on Friday. Day is the second head coach of a Top 5 team to come down with the virus in recent days.Ohio State confirmed that there has been an increase in the number of coronavirus cases in the athletics program, but declined to say how many have tested positive. Ohio State was slated to leave Columbus on Friday, but after Day and other unnamed members of the team tested positive for COVID-19, the team conducted more testing with the hopes of traveling to Illinois on Saturday hours before kickoff. Earlier this week, Alabama head coach Nick Saban announced he tested positive for the coronavirus, and would not be in attendance for the No. 1-ranked Crimson Tide’s contest against Auburn.The Big Ten requires that coaches isolate for 10 days following a positive coronavirus test. It’s unclear exactly when he tested positive. After tomorrow’s matchup at Illinois, Ohio State plays Michigan State on Dec. 5.The coronavirus has played havoc on the college football schedule in recent weeks.One other Big Ten matchup has already been canceled this week, a contest between Minnesota and Wisconsin. O'FALLON, Mo. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley is urging Attorney General William Barr to launch a federal civil rights investigation of St. Louis' elected prosecutor. Hawley is accusing Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner of abusing her power in her investigation of a white couple who wielded guns while defending their home during a protest. Mark and Patricia McCloskey are being investigated by Gardner's office for the June 28 confrontation when several hundred protesters marched by their .15 million mansion. The couple said the marchers knocked down an iron gate marked with "No Trespassing" and "Private Street" signs. OCEANSIDE (KGTV) - A big problem the homeless population faces is finding a safe place to bathe, that's why businesses are teaming up to help. Jordan Verdin has spent the last decade working with the homeless population in the North County. As a photographer, he’s always taking pictures and sharing their stories on social media. Part of Verdin’s love of taking pictures of the homeless is allowing them the opportunity of, “being seen and being heard but sometimes they might not want to be seen because of how they look so what we want to do I provide something that will eliminate that barrier”. He tells 10News, “One of the consistent needs shared with me is needing a place to shower”. After hearing that need repeated time and time again, he’s decided to work another project. Verdin mentioned the project to Oceanside business owner Jeanette Linnborn. Linnborn is the owner of coffee shop, Stay Golden. When Verdin brought the idea to Linnborn she jumped on board immediately. She tells 10News, “I was so excited about that I was like okay we can totally do this”. The shower trailer is made up of two sides, each equipped with a bathroom and shower. Verdin tells me 125 people will be able to shower daily. The shower trailer will stand as a liaison to help homeless back on their feet, “something as simple as a shower and a haircut just makes them feel human again” Verdin tells 10News. The cost of the shower trailer is ,000 and they have just reached the halfway point. There’s still a GoFundMe page set up to help them get the other half of funding. 1575

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A man died Thursday in an Oceanside home after a fistfight with a relative, police said.Officers were called to the home in the 600 block of Arthur Ave. at 7:17 a.m. because of an argument between two men in the front yard. When police arrived, they found Nestor Jurado, 37, not breathing. Jurado was pronounced dead at the scene."It appears he died as a result of the injuries he sustained during the fight," Lt. Kedrick Sadler said. Police arrested 35-year-old Joel Cardona and booked him into the Vista Detention Facility on a murder charge.Sadler said the reason for the fight is unknown and no weapons were found at the scene. Jurado's sister told 10News Cardona is their mother's cousin. 763
