BALTIMORE — On a cold day in February, Evelyn Businsky was on her couch when the sliding glass door behind her spontaneously shattered."I was glad that the curtain was closed because it just burst out," Businsky said. The inside pane of the door shattered into a thousand little pieces on her living room floor. Her and her husband immediately called the remodeling company that installed the windows and doors about 20 years ago. They chose Homefix Custom Remodeling for their lifetime warranty. An estimator came out the next day but the Businskys say they were unable to get an answer on when the door would be replaced and how much it would cost. The company eventually called the couple to let them know they were going to replace the door at no cost.As for why or how the door shattered, the Businskys figured it was the combination of the polar vortex and the hot air coming from their space heater. However, Mike Geraci, director of marking and business development at Caplan Glass in Baltimore, isn't convinced that's what caused the glass to give out."I doubt very seriously because of the cold weather and heater, looks like five or six feet away, that it caused that door to explode," Gerarci said.He said it could've been stress, potentially some temperature imbalance or the materials inside the glass."One of the ingredients in float glass is nickel alloy, and if there's a large concentration of that particular ingredient in the glass, that could cause the glass to fracture or split," Geraci said.However, this is rare and uncommon."Very rare for that to happen. There's thousands and thousands of tempered glass being produced every hour," Geraci said.And yet, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission received nearly 30 reports in the last six months of shower doors, TV stands, casserole dishes and glass appliances exploding out of nowhere."There's a process called heat soaking where they take the glass, they heat it up and then they put it right into warm water and in that bath any kind of informality in the glass should make it explode in water to prevent it from happening after purchase but it's hard to say. Again, these are very rare cases," he said.When deciding on windows and doors in your home, you do have another glass option. On impact, tempered glass shatters into tiny little pieces while laminated glass splinters but stays in place. These are designed to protect the consumer from being injured. While laminated glass may appear to be a better option to protect against break-ins, tempered glass is actually four to five times stronger. Laminated glass is also typically more expensive, however, it can be replaced faster.Homefix Custom Remodeling said the Businskys door should be ready in six to eight weeks. The couple is happy it's getting taken care of, but the lengthy timeline and fluctuating weather gives them some concern."I have COPD, and if I get a cold you've got to figure it's like somebody else getting pneumonia. And if I get pneumonia, I could die," said Evelyn Businsky.Homefix Custom Remodeling said they're not an emergency glass replacement company and are unable to expedite the replacement. In an email, a spokeswoman for the company wrote: "We are eager to see the door replaced, and are doing all that we can to facilitate that outcome." California marijuana users can now turn to their smartphones to find out if a dispensary is legit.The Bureau of Cannabis Control on Thursday announced a program encouraging licensed cannabis retailers to post QR codes in their store windows. CANTON, Mich. — Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has dismissed a case against a 10-year-old Canton, Michigan, boy.The boy was previously formally charged with aggravated assault after a schoolyard game in April.On April 29, students at the Canton school were playing a game called "Tips" in the schoolyard with a rubber ball similar to a dodge ball. According to a release, the game doesn't involve throwing the ball at other players.Reports state that once the game was over, it is alleged that the 10-year-old took the ball and intentionally threw it with force, causing the 9-year-old to suffer a concussion and cuts to his face.The injured child's mother then made a complaint to local police.Worthy released the following statement on the dismissal of charges. Read the full statement below:This case came to us as a not-In-custody case - that means that there was never an arrest. Efforts were made to resolve this matter before it was sent to us for a charge consideration. The mother of the alleged victim had every right to go to the authorities and the authorities had an obligation to investigate. When this case was reviewed by my office, no one paid attention the race of either party. It is categorically wrong to suggest that this was charged based on race or geography.There has been quite a bit of inaccurate reporting in this case. There are also facts that played into our decision that have not, due to ethical rules, been reported. I will never try our cases in the court of public opinion or outcry. Petition drives, protests, and other public so called pressure certainly have their place in a democracy. But they should never impact what is done in a case and should not affect outcomes. Justice always should. The Juvenile Justice System, while by no means perfect, is markedly different from the adult systems in many ways for many reasons. There are certainly more options available and there should be. As I stated yesterday, often times in the appropriate matter, the result is dismissal, getting services provided, diversionary programs, and other options. Many times, cases should not be in the systems if other solutions can be implemented. Many times we will “go back to the table” and craft results and can do that if all parties cooperate. I have always been willing to keep an open mind when warranted, especially in juvenile cases. Admirably, that was tried here but we were not the table.I have no doubt that both families involved love their children and want the best for them. But I do think that there is a better way to go forward at this time. And the cooperation of all parties is needed.While the charge in this case is certainly sustainable, I have instructed my staff to dismiss this case today. It is my earnest hope that both sides will come back to the table to work out a solution that benefits both of these children. Again, I am confident that both of them are highly valued.
