SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Valley Fire has scorched more than 17,000 acres forcing families and animals out of their homes, but during all the chaos, the Children's Nature Retreat in Alpine was able to find safe homes for most of its 143 animals. It's been a tough last few days says Executive Director Agnes Barrelet, who spotted the fire and a hillside, the minute it sparked."You can't panic. You have to worry, but you have to remain cool. If you panic, your animals are going to sense it, and it's going to be worse," said Barrelet.In all, the nature retreat had to evacuate 118 of their animal which wasn't easy."We evacuated the most fragile animals first, and then the one's that may panic. I evacuated all the horses, then the mini horses mini donkeys," Barrelet says.A majority of the animals were taken by Good Samaritan's and given places to stay at various locations in East County."They were calling us and we were determining what space they had, and how much space. We also needed to know the height of the fences," Barrelet said. "That gave us an indication of who would take which animals where."It's been a tough year for the Children's Nature Retreat, as they were forced to close earlier this year due to COVID-19, and now the fires have temporarily shut them down."The fire of course forced us to close down again. If we are closed down, we have no revenues at all," Barrelet added. 1409

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thirteen people overcoming a unique set of obstacles plan to conquer a 13.1-mile marathon this weekend.They're called the Lucky 13."It takes a lot of courage, and you've got to be really brave, even just to apply," said Paul Carey, the Lucky 13 Coordinator, and Head Coach.The Tri-City Medical Center program assists those who have had or are currently overcoming health obstacles to achieve their fitness goals. For six months, they're professionally trained and receive wellness support ahead of the Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Half-Marathon."Everything good I have in my life can be traced back to Lucky 13 and being part of that," said Carey, who was a participant years ago.For 30 years Carey felt trapped in his bipolar diagnosis.During that time, he was on heavy medications, had several psychiatric hospital stays, and underwent 50 sessions of electroconvulsive therapy.Then he found the Lucky 13 program."It's an endless foundation of support that's just something really remarkable," said Carey. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Unified School District is suing e-cigarette company JUUL, claiming its product “disrupts the education and learning environment across the district.”The lawsuit follows similar suits filed by school districts in Los Angeles, Glendale, Compton and Anaheim. The district is seeking an injunction and abatement to “stop the e-cigarette epidemic” which the district claims severely impacted normal school operations. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Padres made another trade on Monday, this time acquiring relief pitcher Taylor Williams from the Seattle Mariners just before Major League Baseball’s trade deadline.MLB.com Padres beat writer AJ Cassavell confirmed the Friars picked up the 29-year-old Williams in exchange for a player to be named later.Williams has a 1-1 record on the season with a 5.93 ERA and six saves.Ironically, Williams was the losing pitcher in the Padres’ wild comeback win over the Mariners on Aug. 27.
