Your two favorite tiger cubs are ready for visitors at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Friday the zoo released video of the cubs enjoying their new home. The approximately 3-month-old, rescued Bengal tiger cub and his 4-month-old companion, a Sumatran tiger cub are settling in nicely at the Tull Family Tiger Trail. “The two cubs are adjusting really well to their new home,” said Lori Hieber, senior mammal keeper at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. “They’re doing great. They are fully weaned from formula, and now eat an exclusively carnivore diet.As they continue to grow, the Bengal tiger will eventually outweigh the Sumatran tiger by about 200 pounds, given the difference between these two tiger subspecies.“We feel really fortunate to have these two cubs here,” said Hieber. “It was an unusual circumstance for us to acquire them, but we think they’re in the best possible hands, and they’re going to have a wonderful life while they’re here at Tiger Trail.” The cubs will be visible to guests daily from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. They may also be seen occasionally on the Safari Park’s online Tiger Cam.Like all tigers, the critically endangered Sumatran tiger and endangered Bengal tiger subspecies face many challenges in the wild, from loss of habitat to conflicts with humans, but the biggest threat continues to be poaching. Tigers are killed by poachers who illegally sell tiger body parts, mostly for folk remedies. People can help protect wild tigers by avoiding products made with non-sustainable palm oil, an industry that harms tiger habitat; and by refusing to purchase items made from endangered wildlife. 2528

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The number of rising COVID-19 cases is causing a nationwide shortage in testing supplies, and some San Diego institutions are looking for ways to tackle the deficit.“I think it’s going to get worse in the short term, so institutions all across the country need to be preparing as if it’s going to get worse,” said Dr. David Pride, the director of molecular microbiology lab at UC San Diego Health. “Across San Diego, institutions have been coming to us experiencing shortages of testing supplies.”Pride said UCSD Health has been looking at pool, or batch, testing as a possible solution to the shortage problem.“There’s the option of rather than having one patient per one test, to try to put multiple different patients together and try to perform one test on that pool of patients together,” he said.This type of testing could help UCSD’s current testing supply last much longer, he said.“They could take a nasal swab, a nasopharyngeal swab, and an oropharyngeal swab. We take those specimens, and we put them together,” Pride explains.He said the key is to spot the large number of patients who need to be tested but don’t appear to have symptoms of COVID-19.The group swabs would then be combined and tested at once.“If that pool is negative, then all the patients are negative, and if that pool is positive, then you need to go back and test each one individually,” he said.The strategy could be put to use in the next week or two, according to Pride.“It’s something that we certainly have validated to demonstrate that it can work,” he said. “We have submitted our strategy to the FDA and have gotten pretty good feedback about doing it.”However, Dr. Eric McDonald, the county’s epidemiology department's medical director, said with the current positivity rate across the county, the technique may not be too beneficial at all labs.The County of San Diego announced this week that it’s changing who can get a test as its free sites.The priority will be people who fall under the high-risk category, like healthcare workers and those with underlying health conditions.The county also announced a partnership with a local company that would provide up to 2,000 COVID-19 tests per day. 2215

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- This is the time of year that retailers usually announce how many workers they'll be hiring for the holiday season, but that's been slow to happen in 2020, according to a new report.Outplacement firm Challenger, Gray and Christmas released a list of about 35 major chains and delivery services, with only seven reporting how many they plan to hire. It says big box chains such as Macy's, Target and Kohl's have still not made their plans public. Firm CEO John Challenger said companies normally start announcing hiring plans after Labor Day. "They're deferring those announcements because they just don't know where they stand," he said. Challenger said retail spending is shifting more dramatically online, given the pandemic. He said that will create a new demand for jobs through distributions centers as opposed to retail stores. The report notes that Amazon has been hiring new people throughout the pandemic, which could explain why the online retail giant only plans to add 100,000 jobs this holiday season, down from the 200,000 it added last year. The report says UPS plans to hire 100,000, up for 95,000 last year; while FedEx will add 70,000, up from 55,000 in 20`19. Challenger said he still expects retail hiring to increase over the holidays because this is their biggest time of year. He said, however, that the jobs may be different in store - from temperature takers to curbside delivery people. Challenger said the competition will be quite keen amid double digit employment, with information potentially limited. "You need to be out there right now looking to get these jobs, talking with retailers, letting them know you're interested, because they'll make their hiring and then it will be more, catch as catch can," Challenger said. The uncertainty has also extended to Main Street. Luisa Jackson, a co-owner of Earth's Elements, a gift and beauty boutique with locations in Little Italy and Carlsbad, said normally this time of year is about planning for the holidays. In 2020, it's about surviving amid a global pandemic. "It's just a lot of uncertainty and we also don't know about how COVID is going to impact the fall," said Jackson, who noted the chain does have three jobs currently open, and plans to staff up more for the holidays. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- This year, the Drug Enforcement Administration is adding vaping products to the list of what they’ll accept on National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The agency will be accepting prescriptions and vaping products on October 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. According to the agency, nearly 10 million Americans misused controlled prescription drugs in 2018. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that there have been 33 deaths in 24 states and nearly 1,500 lung injuries from vaping in 2019.The agency is treating the events like an outbreak, saying the best advice is to avoid using all forms of E-Cigarettes. The DEA decided to add vaping products to their drug take back event to make sure they're safely removed."If people throw them away, if people dump them down the toilet, if people store them in a drawer, they're still not safe," says DEA Special Agent in Charge Colin Roane." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego State University Aztecs football team will play its 2021 home games in Carson due to construction of the team's new stadium in Mission Valley.Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson will be the site for Aztec home matchups in the spring and fall of next year. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Aztecs' 2020 football season was pushed into spring 2021.Although the spring schedule has yet to be announced by the Mountain West Conference, the Aztecs' fall 2021 slate includes seven home games, including matchups with Utah, Boise State, Fresno State, New Mexico, Nevada, New Mexico State and Towson.SDSU Athletic Director John David Wicker said, “Once the sale of the site was finalized with the city and we knew we could play football in Aztec Stadium in fall 2022, based on all the information we had gathered, it became clear the existing stadium had to come down in the first quarter of 2021. Our intention had been to play a final season in SDCCU Stadium. Unfortunately, COVID-19 has forced our hand and we must move the spring 2021 games as well.”In a news release, the athletic department said: "SDCCU Stadium will be replaced by a new stadium as part of the SDSU Mission Valley project. In addition to a 35,000-seat state-of-the-art multipurpose stadium for Aztec football, the project also includes a vibrant, mixed-use development that is transit-oriented, and will expand the university’s educational, research, entrepreneurial, and technology transfer programs. SDSU Mission Valley will also include transit, retail, housing, and the development of more than 80 acres of community parks and open space, including the 34-acre River Park."Construction on the new stadium site in Mission Valley is expected to be completed by fall 2022.Opened in 2003, the 27,000-seat Dignity Health Sports Park has played host to National Football League, XFL, Major League Soccer and World Cup championship events.
