The Department of Defense announced on Friday the formation of the Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force, which will be tasked with looking into reports of UFOs.The Pentagon says that task force’s mission is to detect, analyze and catalog unidentified aerial phenomena, better known as UFOs, that could potentially pose a threat to U.S. national security.“As DOD has stated previously, the safety of our personnel and the security of our operations are of paramount concern,” the Department of Defense said. “The Department of Defense and the military departments take any incursions by unauthorized aircraft into our training ranges or designated airspace very seriously and examine each report. This includes examinations of incursions that are initially reported as UAP when the observer cannot immediately identify what he or she is observing.”Sen. Marco Rubio confirmed the formation of the task force last month in an interview with Miami’s WFOR-TV."We have things flying over our military bases and places where we are conducting military exercises, and we don't know what it is and it isn't ours, so that's a legitimate question to ask,"Rubio said.In April, the Pentagon released videos of “unidentified aerial phenomena” captured by Navy pilots. One of the videos was from 2004, while another two were from 2015.“After a thorough review, the department has determined that the authorized release of these unclassified videos does not reveal any sensitive capabilities or systems, and does not impinge on any subsequent investigations of military air space incursions by unidentified aerial phenomena,” the Pentagon said in April. “DOD is releasing the videos in order to clear up any misconceptions by the public on whether or not the footage that has been circulating was real, or whether or not there is more to the videos.” 1846

The Florida House on Wednesday passed legislation that would impose new restrictions on firearm sales and allow some teachers and staff to carry guns in school.The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act was spurred by the February 14 shooting in Parkland, Florida. The bill, which passed 67-50, now goes to Gov. Rick Scott. He has 15 days to sign it.Earlier in the day, Scott expressed reservations about the provision to arm school personnel. He vowed to review the bill "line by line" before signing it."The group that I'm going to be talking to -- the groups that I care most about right now because it impacted them so much -- is the families," Scott said.Speaking on behalf of the 17 families who lost loved ones in the shooting, Andrew Pollack, whose daughter was killed, urged Scott to sign the bill."We stand united in asking him to sign this historic bill into law," he said after the bill's passage."We thank the House and Senate for voting in favor of protecting our children, but more needs to be done and it's important for the country to unite in the same way the 17 families united in support of this bill."Scott also concerned about waiting period 1187

The Dow Jones Industrial Average has nearly made a full comeback from the coronavirus doldrums its faced during the spring.After peaking in February at 29,551, the Dow Jones dropped to 18,591 just a month later. On Tuesday, the Dow closed at 29,420 points for its highest close since February 12.The Dow Jones has been spurred by news that Pfizer’s Phase 3 coronavirus vaccine is showing at 90% effectiveness rating. The COVID-19 pandemic is teaching us important lessons about the next potential infectious disease threat.“That includes things like dealing with the problems that are before us now, things like antibiotic resistance that kills too many Americans every day and preparing for things we don't know about by having good surveillance programs and public health infrastructure,” said Dr. Helen Boucher, Infectious Diseases Chief at Tufts Medical Center.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says antibiotic-resistant infections impact nearly 3 million people a year and are responsible for 35,000 deaths. That's less than COVID-19, but there is new evidence the two are colliding.A new CDC report points to an outbreak of a multiple drug-resistant bacteria at a New Jersey hospital already dealing with a surge of COVID-19 patients. From February through July, there were 34 of the bacteria cases. Half were in COVID-19 patients and 10 of them died.At the time, the hospital wasn't able to use the same standard of infection control practices due to capacity, shortages in PPE, medical equipment and staff.“Certainly, having health care workers healthy so they can take care of patients is very important,” said Boucher. “You might have seen that there had been some outbreaks, places across the country that have really impacted the ability to have adequate health care workers take care of patients, and that is the worst thing that could happen. And we know leads to unnecessary deaths.”COVID-19 hospitalizations are higher now than the previous two peaks in April and July.Recruiting additional medical staff is also more difficult now as more hospitals are seeing surges. In the spring, some medical facilities were laying staff off due to fewer patients.The CDC says drug-resistant infections decreased when COVID cases dropped.
