SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California public health officials said Friday that the state's ICU capacity dropped dangerously low, prompting warnings to take the latest regional stay-at-home order seriously. The Office of the Governor announced on social media that, "there is less than 10% ICU capacity remaining statewide. We are at a critical moment. Calling all Californians - stay home & wear a mask to save lives. All hands on deck with our health & emergency teams as we address the capacity crisis."The state also broke a single-day record for new COVID-19 cases with 35,468 cases on Friday, and reached a new high in hospitalizations, with 12,013 patients, and ICU cases, at 2,669, Los Angeles ABC affiliate KABC said.RELATED: San Diego hospitals lay out plans to distribute vaccines to staffFriday, the state's COVID-19 data showed California's ICU capacity at 9% and a seven-day average 8.4% positivity rate. The Southern California region, which includes San Diego County, currently sits at 6.2% ICU capacity. The figures, however, don't necessarily give a real-time picture of staffed beds available since the state adjusts the percentage based on the ratio of COVID-19 positive and non-coronavirus patients.California's regional stay-at-home orders covered 36 counties, or about 77% of the state, as of Friday.Friday, FDA officials are expected to approve Pfizer's coronavirus vaccine for distribution. According to the CDC, front line medical workers are among the first set to receive the vaccination. 1522

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Beaches in San Diego are expected to be packed for the Fourth of July weekend as other nearby counties shut down their beaches over coronavirus concerns.Local law enforcement agencies are prepared for the influx in beachgoers, but many are hoping and wondering if people will follow San Diego County’s facial covering and social distancing requirements. On Friday, ABC 10News crews observed visitors at Mission Beach keeping their distance from each other and most of them wearing facial coverings. Many visitors came to the beach early to secure spots for what will likely be a busy weekend. The Cotus family, visiting San Diego from Arizona, heard about Gov. Gavin Newsom closing beaches where coronavirus numbers are rising. But the family took the chance that San Diego beaches would stay open.“We figured this morning we got the kids up. OK, let’s take a chance; either we can get to the beach or we can’t. If not, there’s a pool at the hotel,” Edward Cotus said.Law enforcement agencies said they will be out this weekend reminding people about the rules. However, they say it will be up to the public to follow them. The Cotus family said they understand why people don’t like wearing the face coverings, but they believe it’s everyone’s responsibility to do their part in controlling the spread of this virus.“We all have to be responsible and just try to really implement social distancing on our own. It seems like a lot of the public doesn’t understand; you just have to do that on your own,” Cotus said. 1539

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Apple says it will temporarily close all of its California storefronts, as the number of coronavirus cases surge in the state, according to multiple media reports. The company's Golden State locations, including stores in Carlsbad, Chula Vista, Escondido, and two in San Diego, were all listed online as "temporarily closed" on Saturday.Apple says each store will be open for pickup of existing online orders, previously scheduled in-store Genius Support appointments, and previously reserved one-on-one shopping appointments made through Tuesday, Dec. 22.No date was listed online for when the stores would fully reopen. The closures come as California continues to see a surge in COVID-19 cases. Both the Southern California and San Joaquin Valley regions hit 0% ICU bed capacity and the state reported more than 43,600 new virus cases on Saturday. 875
