Buried at the core of "Mulan" is the concept of deception. Deceiving others for the perceived greater good, deceiving an overzealous enemy and even deceiving one's self at a steep price.All of them are at play in the long-awaited, oft-disappointing live-action remake.There are some things going for the oft-dull film.Director Niki Caro, who proved adept at inspirational tales with "Whale Rider," "North Country" and "McFarland, USA," has a pulse on the heart of the feminist fable, about a woman who masquerades as a man to protect her family and homeland. The visuals are dynamic, and the casting is note-perfect.Martial arts legends Jet Li, Donnie Yen and Gong Li play significant roles, and the cinematography and choreography often recalls exaggerated, Ang Lee-style theatrics.The core of the film -- that Mulan could convincingly trick her military comrades into thinking she's a man -- falls flat. While Liu Yifei thrives with the athletic ability and emotion needed in the lead role, the makeup department did her no favors. She looks more like a supermodel than a rough-hewn male soldier. Scenes in which men assume her gender are unintentionally funny.The new "Mulan" takes a more somber and serious tone than the original, swapping out the Eddie Murphy-voiced comic relief dragon Mushu for a CGI Phoenix, and subduing most musical moments in favor of tense, overly dry brooding.It's been a long and rough wait for superfans. Originally slated for a July 24 release, the movie was bumped to August 21, before landing September 4 on Disney+ as a early access add-on. It will be free on the app December 4, and unless you're a superfan, you're best off waiting until then.At least fans will be able to be mildly disappointed in the comfort of their own homes, and be able to hit pause if they get a little drowsy.There is impressive artistry at work. The film is every bit as gorgeous and sweeping as Disney's best live-action remakes: "The Jungle Book" and "The Lion King."Add this one to the pile of disappointing live-action remakes of Disney classics, along with "Aladdin," "Dumbo," "Alice in Wonderland," "Lady and the Tramp" and "Beauty and the Beast."The movie's legacy may well be what it does for boosting Disney's app and changing the way studios sell movies to the public. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - A brush fire broke out in Carlsbad Friday morning along busy Palomar Airport Road.The fire started about 11:15 a.m. and sent a plume of smoke above the area near Palomar Oaks Way, between Aviara Parkway and El Camino Real. Flames were contained to about five acres by 1 p.m. They appeared to be confined to eucalyptus trees east of The Crossings golf course and near office buildings.Carlsbad Police reported on twitter they briefly evacuated businesses on Dryden Place about noon. The evacuation was lifted about 20 minutes later. There was no word on what caused the fire.Westbound traffic on Palomar Airport Road was stopped at Camino Vida Roble.Check traffic 696

CHICAGO, Ill. – According to the Mueller report, during the last election, Russian hackers breached the computer network of the Illinois State Board of Elections, gaining access to information on millions of registered voters. It was just one example of the vulnerabilities in the U.S. election system.Intelligence officials and security experts agree that cyber-attacks like the one’s perpetrated during the 2016 presidential election are not a thing of the past.“There's no reason to believe that attacks like that would not happen in this election,” said Jake Braun, executive director at the Cyber Policy Initiative at the University of Chicago. He’s also the author of “Democracy in Danger: How Hackers and Activists Exposed Fatal Flaws in the Election System.”Braun says the two most serious vulnerabilities lie in voter registration databases and election night returns data. He says the hacking of either could cause chaos at the polls or spawn conspiracy theories about the election’s outcome.“We're already seeing ransomware attacks on databases and we're already seeing things like fake websites to mimic election websites being put up,” said Braun.Mary Hanley, Associate Director of the Cyber Policy Initiative, says they are trying to help protect against those kinds of attacks. For the first time through their cyber surge program, they’re connecting a network of 250 volunteer cybersecurity technologists with U.S. state and local election officials ahead of the 2020 election.“We can help answer basic questions about general cyber hygiene, but we can also help election administrators understand how to remediate vulnerabilities that they've already identified,” she said.Volunteer cyber technologists like New Mexico-based Chris Perkins say election officials need to be able to see where potential assaults can present themselves.“Once you have that visibility on your attack surfaces, then you can start to detect those anomalies and things that start to look like suspicious activity,” said Perkins.In a highly polarized atmosphere, cyber experts say it’s even more important to ensure that security breaches are quickly identified and contained. 2176

Carl Kasell, a fixture on NPR for more than 30 years on "Morning Edition" and later its quiz show "Wait Wait ... Don't Tell Me!," died Tuesday from complications from Alzheimer's disease. He was 84.Kasell began his career at NPR as a part-time employee on "All Things Considered" in the mid-1970s, then became the news announcer for the first broadcast of "Morning Edition" in 1979.In that role Kasell became one of public radio's most recognizable voices. Yet after years of being associated with breaking news, he had the opportunity to showcase a lighter side of himself starting in 1998 as judge and scorekeeper on "Wait Wait," hosted by Peter Sagal. An early prize for winners was to have Kasell record the outgoing message on their answering machine.In a statement, Sagal called him "the kindest, most decent person I have ever known," adding that after listening to him for years, "Hearing him say my name, that very first time, made me feel like I had somehow made it." Burning Man co-founder Larry Harvey passed away on Saturday, according to festival CEO Marian Goodell. He was 70 years old.Goodell made the announcement through a blog post on Burning Man's website. She says that Harvey suffered a massive stroke on April 4. He passed away peacefully on April 28 in San Francisco with family members at his side."Burning Man culture has lost a great leader and an inspiring mind," Goodell wrote in the blog post. "The loss of his presence in our daily lives will be felt for years, but because of the spirit of who he is, we will never truly be without him."The annual celebration of "radical self-expression" and "radical self-reliance" brings hundreds of thousands of people to the Black Rock Desert in Nevada.
