SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego pilot is attempting a historic flight to promote global peace. Robert DeLaurentis will first be traveling to the South Pole and then to the North Pole, connecting the only two places on the planet where peace exists. "It's a mission of global peace. We like to say oneness. One planet, one people, one plane," said DeLaurentis.They have been working on upgrading the 1983 aircraft for several years now; DeLaurentis named it Citizen of the World. "It's like taking a classic car and turning it into a race car. It's been talking to us, letting us know what needs to be fixed or replaced," DeLaurentis says.It's not the first time DeLaurentis has attempted an ambitious journey. In 2015, he circumnavigated the globe, braving a failing engine at one point. "My dad says he'd prefer I have a country club membership than do these flights!" jokes DeLaurentis.But it was on that trip he learned no matter where you live, we're all more similar than we may think. DeLaurentis will be the first to complete the journey with this class of airplane. And will also be the first to use biofuel over the poles, which is better for the environment.He'll have a NASA experiment on board and will also be testing the air for pollutants every step of the way.DeLaurentis will face harsh conditions in the South Pole, like extreme winds and weather fronts. But despite the dangers, he says this is what he's meant to do."People work hard, and they get to the point where they decide they want to do some other things, for me, it's just to go out in the world and maybe make a difference. So I'll take my chances."The San Diego pilot is getting help from over 90 sponsors to make the trip a reality. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- All evacuation orders and warnings have been lifted following a brush fire that erupted in San Diego's Talmadge neighborhood Tuesday afternoon. The fire started after 1 p.m. on Fairmont Avenue and Aldine Drive near Central Elementary School. The fire could be seen burning up a canyon in the area as smoke billowed into nearby neighborhoods. At times, flames came within 200 feet of homes. Evacuations were briefly ordered for Norma Drive, Constance Drive and Natalie Drive. The Hoover High School football field had been set up as a temporary shelter.RELATED: Check today's forecastThe fire also knocked out power to thousands in the area, but electricity was restored around 5 p.m. The fire sparked amid elevated fire weather concerns. Gusty offshore winds are expected in the mountains and foothills through Wednesday with afternoon humidity between 15 and 25 percent. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego-area man and his grandmother filed a federal lawsuit against two San Diego County Sheriff's Deputies.The lawsuit alleges deputies responded to the wrong address and pulled a then-17-year-old out of his apartment. "I've never experienced something like that," said Cesar Jaramillo.Jaramillo says last October he was watching TV on the couch when he heard a knock at the door. He says deputies asked if someone from the residence called 911.According to his lawsuit, "Cesar informed defendants the call was not from his residence. When defendants asked Cesar if there was a young black female in the apartment, Cesar said 'No,' and informed defendants that they were at the wrong apartment building. Cesar knew who defendants were referencing and knew they lived in the other building. Cesar informed the deputies over half-a-dozen times that defendants were at the wrong building."Jaramillo tells 10News he complied with everything the deputies asked but felt like they didn't believe him."That's when I started closing the wide door, that's when he just reached in and grabbed my hand," Jaramillo said.The lawsuit claims, "Without warrant or probable cause, both defendants unreasonably lured Cesar to unlock and open the door, then entered into Plaintiff's residence and forcibly pulled Cesar by the forearms into submission, leaving instant bruises on both arms."Jaramillo's grandmother was in the back of the house at the time and said she woke up to the commotion."I saw my grandson laying on the ground, in handcuffs and I went crazy, and I said, what is happening," said Teodora Villalobos.According to the lawsuit, "Due to unreasonable seizure and force used on her grandson Cesar, as well as defendants' indifferent attitude, Teodora began having heart complications on scene."Jaramillo's lawsuit alleges negligence, battery, and unreasonable search and seizure, among other things.10News reached out to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department for comment, but a spokesperson they can't comment on pending litigation. 2066

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A tour this weekend will give San Diegans a chance to see all of the options they have to make their homes more energy-efficient and climate-friendly.The San Diego Green Homes Tour features 14 houses, all with unique ways to go green."We have a variety of homes from luxury and do it yourself tactics that everyday people can employ," says tour Co-Chair Katie Teare. "We're hoping people that attend the tour can learn and be inspired to put some of these techniques into their own home."Among the options, a home that is entirely off-the-grid and run by solar power, a home built from straw bales, a home that turned the backyard pool into a pond, and several homes that are LEED-certified as among the most energy-efficient.RELATED: Photos of energy efficient homes in San Diego (Slide Show)"If you're going to be building a new house it just seems like the right thing to do," says Kristin Brinner, whose newly built Solana Beach home is part of the tour. "We have a daughter, and we're really concerned about climate change and the world she's coming into, so we want to do everything we can to minimize our impacts."Brinner's home features solar power, a grey-water system, and a driveway that percolates water and pushes it to their yard instead of into storm drains.She and her husband took the tour three years ago to get inspiration as they started to design their new home."It might cost a little more to buy a nicer system, but if you look at the cost over time, since they're so efficient, you get back a return on the money," says Brinners husband, Chris Novak.Bill Powers agrees. He set up his home with a fully self-contained solar power system in 2014. He says it's time that these kinds of renovations become the standard, not the exception."This isn't fringe stuff. This is something you can do if you'd like to do and give you the flexibility to protect your own home when the grid's not available," says Powers.The tour is on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets to tour the homes are for both days or for one day.
