SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. -- Those stuck at home and going stir crazy many have begun venturing out this summer. Air and car travel have been steadily increasing in recent months and visits to lakefront resorts have been on the rise. But some worry the economic boost in tourism could be short-lived.Located along the shores of Lake Michigan, the resort town of South Haven is a drivable oasis for busy urban dwellers looking for a quick escape like Naperville, Illinois, resident Edward Marcin.“People are friendly. The water here the boats… it’s almost like going to New England in two and a half hours,” says Marcin.Scott Reinert, the executive director of the South Haven, Van Buren County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau says the tourism economy here brings in about million of revenue to the area each year.“Lodging represents a little over 20 percent of the total spend when visitors come in,” he says.But the pandemic shutdown wiped out 10 weeks of business. Revenues for the beachfront community were down 90 percent.“They essentially put us out of business,” says John Marple. He owns the Old Harbor Inn in South Haven.Forced to lay off his entire staff, Marple lost 20% of his gross income.Federal stimulus dollars he says helped him keep from going under.But once the state allowed for reopening in early June, business began booming. It took just days for rooms to sell out completely through July and even into august.“The online reservations just blew up. I had the highest sales month I ever had in June of this year,” says Marple.It’s so busy Marple has removed the inn from travel sites like Expedia and Booking.com.Today, the town is bustling with tourists. The beaches are completely packed. Housekeeping can barely keep up with the enhanced disinfecting process.“Right now, it takes us approximately 45 minutes longer to properly prepare a room for a new guest by doing all the sanitation,” says Marple.Door stickers now indicate when a room has been cleaned and that no one has been inside. But rising COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in many states are changing consumer attitudes towards travel plans.“With so many visitors coming in from in some cases hotspots from around the state or around the Midwest,” says Reinert. “You know, how long can we stay safe?”According to a travel survey conducted this month by Longwoods International, 76% of travelers say the will change their plans because of coronavirus. That’s up from 69% at the beginning of June. And 45% say they will cancel trips completely. That’s up from 37% in June.“The past week for sure we have seen a rash of cancellations,” says Marple.While the current increase in tourism has helped recover some losses, another shut down Marple worries could be devastating to the seasonal businesses here.“I do worry that business may not return like it has in the past. I think this is going to be an issue for quite some time," he said. 2927

Since the COVID-19 pandemic started, hate-related incidents directed towards Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders have risen drastically.According to Stop Asian-American and Pacific Islander Hate, an advocacy group working to raise awareness about the issue, 2,538 have been documented since March.The group, based in the San Francisco Bay Area, says incidents are self-reported, as well as taken from news reports across the country.“Surveys have shown that over three-quarters of Asian Americans are aware and fear racial bias at the moment,” said Russell Jeung, a professor of Asian-American Studies at San Francisco State University, who tracks the incidents for Stop AAPI Hate.Jeung says his research has found the President Donald Trump’s use of the term “China virus” is having a direct impact on the harassment, as 30 percent of the incidents reported say the language used has mirrored the president’s.“We’re seeing vulnerable populations being targeted,” said Jeung. “Women are harassed 2.4 times more than men. Youth make up 14 percent of our cases so that means there’s a lot of school bullying going on, a lot of online cyber-bullying."“We’ve seen incidents of spitting, vandalism, hostility towards Asian-owned businesses during this time,” said Jay Cheng, a member of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce.Two months ago four Asian-owned businesses were vandalized and robbed in the city’s Outer Balboa neighborhood, one of San Francisco’s most diverse areas. Windows were smashed and derogatory language was written on several storefronts.“San Francisco is, in many ways, the capital of Asian-America, so this is the last place you would expect to see that type of racism,” said Cheng.Jeung says in Asian-American and Pacific Islander communities across the country, the harassment causes apprehension and pain knowing once an illness hits, these communities get blamed.“It’s not unexpected. I was ready, but I find the hate palpable and horrific,” said Jeung. “It’s just really sad to me that people are so angry, so fearful, and that they’re scapegoating other people for the pandemic rather than blaming it as a natural virus.”Jeung says the way forward is recognizing that words matter. He says a group similar to Stop AAPI Hate based in Australia has reported cases of Anti-Asian and Pacific Islander harassment that mirrors President’s Trump use of the term “China virus."“This November, there is going to be a very clear statement about whether or not this language, this type of attitude, is acceptable or not,” said Cheng. 2556

Someone broke into Queen Califia’s Magical Circle located in Kit Carson Park.The sculpture garden features many works of art, including a mosaic maze, totem sculptures, a fountain, and a wall in the form of playful serpents.  The vandals cut the lock to the gate leading into the property. Then they smashed more than 20 custom shaped mirrors in the mosaic maze.  They also damaged two of the totems. The damage was discovered this week.Lech Juretko, of Art Mosaic Inc, helped the artist, Niki de Saint Phalle, create the sculpture garden for the community. He is also the one charged with repairing it.“I cannot really explain it,” Juretko said about the damage, “It’s sad. It’s never happened.”Juretko estimates it will cost ,000 to ,000 to repair the damage. He did not have a timeline for the repairs.The City of Escondido released the following statement to 10News.“The City plans to keep Queen Califia’s Magical Circle open during the regularly scheduled hours, weather permitting. Signage will be posted, and areas that could possibly be sharp from the glass and tile breakage will be blocked off. In addition, we always have a volunteer docent on site at all times while the sculpture garden is open to the public. SOLANA BEACH (CNS) - A 77-year-old Solana Beach man diagnosed with dementia was reported missing Monday.Uldarico Baquero was last seen near his home in the 600 block of Nardo Avenue about 9 a.m., according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.Baquero is Hispanic, 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighs 140 pounds. He was last seen wearing a dark green jacket and gray shorts, the department said.Anyone with information on Baquero's whereabouts was asked to call the sheriff's department at 858-565-5200. 515
