A high school teacher from San Diego and her students are up for an Academy Award, KABC reports. They’re all taboo subjects in the United States, periods, menstruation and bleeding. But a group of high school students and their teacher, Melissa Berton, are trying to change that. Berton is originally from San Diego and graduated from Patrick Henry High School. Now, she's a producer on “Period. End of Sentence” and an English teacher at Oakwood High School in Los Angeles. “I think it has been a profound experience from start to finish,” Berton said. In 2013, she advised a group of students who were selected as United Nations delegates to advocate for women and girls. That’s when their journey to normalize menstruation began. “Who better to sort of be the voice for that than high school young women who are in that moment,” Berton said. Originally, the short documentary was a marketing tool for their bigger vision. A non-profit they created called Pad Project. Their mission was to get a machine that creates biodegradable pads to a rural village in India. “We never thought it would be an Oscar nominated film but the idea was always, if we could just make an educational film, to raise awareness about this issue, then that would be the jewel in the crown of our non-profit”The students were in charge of fundraising and creating the non-profit as well as bringing the documentary to life. Seven executive producers on the project are either in college or grad school and several associate producers are in high school. They put the documentary through the film festival circuit and received award after award and an Academy Award nomination. The students along with Berton say that their biggest achievement of all was normalizing periods for women around the world. “I think the students have felt different responses from their classmates and have felt a little less shy about something that maybe we don't need to feel so shy about,” Berton said. 1972

A group of siblings are back together after being separated in foster care.A Texas couple with three biological children officially adopted the five siblings over a Zoom call in May, doubling the size of their family.Andi Bonura says she and her husband, Thomas, had been wanting to adopt after years of pregnancy issues. Their three existing children, Joey, Sadie and Daphne, were born premature. They also lost one child during a pregnancy and another died in the NICU.So, in 2017, the couple got licensed to become foster parents. Their first foster child was Bryson, who is now 2 years old. The couple then began fostering two of Bryson’s older siblings, David and Gabrielle.Eventually, the two final siblings, Thomas and Carter, started visiting the Bonura home and asked if they could also come live with them, according to Bonura.Bonura says that one day, she got a call saying their foster children’s biological parents were terminating their rights to the kids and they were given the option to adopt them. They said yes.Bonura says finally adopting the children was so freeing and felt wonderful.“We had been working so hard for years to get them all together, to bond as a family and it just feels so amazing to all of us, knowing we are a family, finally,” said Bonura.If you’re considering becoming a foster parent or adopting, Bonura says to do it if you can.“It will be the single most important and meaningful thing in your life,” she said. “The struggles to get to the place, your goal, is worth every tear. A federal appeals court handed the Trump administration a partial victory Monday, granting its emergency request to allow parts of its latest travel ban to go into effect while the appeal is pending.A three-judge panel -- all appointed by former President Bill Clinton -- on the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals decided Monday to keep the lower court's order in place, freezing the ban, for foreign nationals who have a "close familial relationship" with a person in the United States, but granted the Trump administration's request to allow it to go into effect for everyone else.The 9th Circuit panel is set to hear oral arguments on the case on December 6.President Donald Trump signed an executive order in January banning foreign nationals from specific Muslim-majority countries from traveling to the United States, but the restrictions have been tied up in the legal system and have since been revised multiple times.In October, a federal judge in Hawaii blocked the third iteration of the travel ban one day before it was scheduled to take effect.At the time, Judge Derrick Watson said it "plainly discriminates based on nationality."The ban targeted foreign nationals from eight countries -- Chad, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Syria, Venezuela, Somalia and Yemen -- with varying levels of restrictions.The second version of the travel ban, issued in March, had barred residents of six Muslim-majority countries -- Iran, Syria, Libya, Sudan, Somalia and Yemen. 1487

A faulty engine part that could cause vehicles to stall has led to a recall of 400,000 worldwide.The recall affects Toyota Motor Corp. and Subaru Corp., MarketWatch reports. About 80,000 of the 400,000 are Toyotas.Subaru is recalling some of its most popular models, such as the Forester sport-utility vehicle and Impreza and BRZ sports car. Toyota is recalling the Subaru-made 86 and Scion FR-S sports car, MarketWatch said.The automakers announced springs in the engine valve could fracture. That would cause the vehicles to stall and possibly lead to an accident.Earlier in October, Toyota recalled approximately 2.4 million vehicles worldwide due to a problem in which the cars may not enter a fail-safe driving mode as intended, which can cause the vehicle to lose power and stall. About 807,000 of those vehicles are in the United States. If this happens while driving at higher speeds, it could cause a crash. The recall affects 2010-2014 model year Toyota Prius and 2012-2014 Prius v vehicles.There was a second recall involving certain 2018-2019 Tundra and Sequoia vehicles and 2019 Avalon vehicles. About 168,000 vehicles sold in the United States are affected by this recall, which is due to a programming problem in the airbag electronic control unit (ECU) that could disable one or more of the sensors used to detect crashes, possibly causing the side and curtain shield airbags and/or front and knee airbags to not deploy as intended.  1502

A deadly crash involving semi-trucks has shut down eastbound Interstate 10 west of Tonopah, Arizona. According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, multiple semi-trucks were involved in the crash near milepost 79. DPS says a semi rolled over in the area and a second semi was able to come to a stop to avoid the rolled-over truck. At that time, a third truck hit the second semi, killing the driver of the third truck. The impact of the wreck caused the second semi to hit the rolled truck, causing injuries to the second driver. Eastbound lanes are expected to remain closed for some time while crews get "heavy duty tow trucks" to remove the vehicles and debris.The Arizona Department of Transportation says drivers can use the following detour: I-10 EB detour at Vicksburg Road (milepost 45) north to US 60, east to Salome Road and drive southeast back to I-10 past crash site. 925
