(KGTV) -- SeaWorld continues to feel the financial strain of the COVID-19 pandemic, reporting a dramatic loss in revenue on Monday.SeaWorld Entertainment, Inc. revealed troubling earnings numbers from the second quarter and first six months of 2020, including revenue down 96 percent compared to the same time last year.When it comes to attendance, SeaWorld parks saw only 300,000 guests during the second quarter of this year -- a drop of 6.2 million from Q2 in 2019.According to the earnings report, SeaWorld had 6 million in cash/cash equivalents as of June 30. The company had 0 million on April 30.The pandemic forced the closure of the company’s parks, including SeaWorld San Diego, for several months, leading to a decline of 7.2 million guests from the first six months of 2019, the company stated.Following the park closures earlier this year, SeaWorld was forced to furlough 90 percent of its staff.A phased reopening of some parks began in early June, and overall, a total of seven parks were open for 98 operating days compared with all 12 parks open for 861 days during the second quarter of 2019. The reopened parks operated at limited capacity, limited hours and/or limited days.As for SeaWorld San Diego park, an opening date has not been set. SeaWorld said it is "in regular contact with state and local authorities and sincerely looks forward to opening in San Diego and welcoming back its guests as soon as it's safe and permitted to do so."The company said it also does not plan on opening the Aquatica waterpark in Chula Vista this year.SeaWorld Entertainment’s interim CEO Marc Swanson said in the earnings report: "I am extremely proud of our team's performance during this unprecedented and challenging time. (KGTV) - The state Supreme Court started hearing oral arguments Tuesday in San Francisco over San Diego’s pension changes that were approved by voters six years ago.More than 65 percent of San Diegans voted for Proposition B, the "Citizens Pension Reform Initiative" which switched most new city workers to a 401(k) plan instead of a guaranteed pension.Ever since then the measure has been challenged by labor unions. The Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) has been trying to overturn the pension cutbacks in court and now it’s in front of the state Supreme Court.The court will review the Fourth District Court of Appeal’s 2017 ruling on the issue.The focus then was on whether former San Diego city leaders illegally put Prop B on the ballot because they did not meet and confer with the labor union first. The appellate court ruled in favor of the city then.Now, political analyst John Dadian says if the Supreme Court rules in favor of the labor union, the city could be upside-down millions of dollars, directly impacting taxpayers.“Taxpayers should be very scared,” said Dadian.  “They could have to go back and retroactively give the original pension benefits to the new 3,000 employees and that would be horrendous.”Dadian says there is still hope for the city if the court rules in favor of the union.“If it rules against the city they have several options, they could craft a new one (prop) to go back on the ballot and it could possibly go to federal court,” said Dadian.After Tuesday’s hearing, the court has 90 days to make a ruling. 1575

(KGTV) -- The new school year begins Monday morning for the Sweetwater Union High School District, and classes will be very different this time around for students and teachers due to the coronavirus pandemic.Starting Monday, Aug. 3, classes will be taught online, with all students equipped with district-issued computers, laptops or tablets to connect with teachers.SUHSD students will be on a daily block schedule that puts them in three classes per day with 30-45 minutes of virtual face time with teachers. Students’ remaining time will be independent study to complete coursework.District officials said the 2020-21 school year will begin with distance learning through at least Oct. 2. (KGTV) — It took some months after opening for Disneyland to finally make good on its promise of living out your Star Wars dreams, but boy did it deliver."Rise of the Resistance" opens on Friday, Jan. 17 at the park's "Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge" land with one mission: Put riders in the middle of a galaxy far, far away. While not without a few slower moments, the attraction brings a new standard to theme park rides.While Galaxy's Edge has provided a decent amount of "Star Wars" enjoyment, there has been something missing. ROTR rises above expectations, using four ride systems to deliver that feeling fans have craved since the park's "Star Wars" expansion opened last summer.
