DENVER – Psychologists and social workers from Denver Public Schools were on-hand at Joe Shoemaker Elementary School Monday morning after a fourth-grade student died as a result of suicide late last week.The Denver County Coroner’s Office on Monday confirmed the boy, 9-year-old Jamel Myles, died as a result of hanging shortly after 11 p.m. on Thursday.On Friday, Shoemaker Elementary School Principal Christine Fleming sent a letter home to families at the school that Jamal had died. Fleming did not discuss the manner by which the boy had died, but shared a guide showing signs of stress that students might be showing in the wake of the boy’s death.“Our thoughts are with the student’s family at this time,” Fleming wrote. “We will continue to process this sad news as a school community, and again, please feel free to reach out as needed for ongoing support.”Jamal's mother Leia Pierce told the Denver Post that the suicide was a result of being bullied after the boy came out as gay. “My child died because of bullying. My baby killed himself,” Pierce told The Denver Post on Monday. “He didn’t deserve this. He wanted to make everybody happy even when he wasn’t. I want him back so bad.”Pierce went on to say, “He was scared because he is a boy and it’s harder on boys when they come out. I smiled at him and said, ‘I still loved him.’ This world is missing out.”Denver Public Schools spokesman Will Jones said Fleming did not name the boy or the manner of his death out of respect for the family’s privacy.In addition to having crisis team members on hand Monday, there is also a phone line and a room at the elementary school set up for families who have questions about the incident.Jones said fourth- and fifth-grade teachers would be calling the families of their students at the end of the day Monday to check on the kids and that additional support would be available if necessary.“We are deeply committed to our students’ well-being. And while hope is quickly evaporating after losing a few key races, Dems may still have a path to controlling the upper chamber — through Georgia.That's because the Peach State is choosing not just one, but two new Senators in 2020. And because Georgia uses a runoff system to elect its Senators, some candidates will continue campaigning in the state for a few weeks.In Georgia, Senate candidates need to win 50% of the vote on election day in order to secure their seats. If neither candidate reaches the 50% threshold, the top two vote-getters advance to a runoff election in early January.This year, first-term Republican Sen. David Perdue is up for re-election and faces a stiff challenge from Democrat Jon Ossoff, who won a primary election earlier this year. Prior to election day, polls showed a tight race between the two candidates.As of Thursday morning, Perdue currently has just barely 50% of the vote — but the margin is razor-thin and shrinking. As election officials continue to count mail-in ballots, which tend to skew blue, Democrats hope votes for Ossoff and Libertarian candidate Shane Hazel drop Perdue's vote count under the 50% margin to force a runoff.In addition, Georgians this year were also tasked with selecting a replacement for third-term Republican Sen. Johnny Isakson, who retired in 2019 due to health problems. Though businesswoman Kelly Loeffler was tapped by Gov. Brian Kemp to replace Isakson, Kemp announced that a special election would be held in 2020 so voters could select who finished Isakson's term.Because the special election had no primary vote, it was always expected to end in a runoff. Raphael Warnock, a Democrat, currently has the most votes (about 33%) among all candidates — but likely because Loeffler and Rep. Doug Collins waged an expensive inter-Republican fight for the right to compete in a runoff. Loeffler (26%) tallied more votes than Collins (20%), meaning she'll face Warnock in a runoff election early next year.As of Thursday morning, both the Republican and Democrat caucus hold 48 Senate seats, with four races still to be called by the Associated Press. (KGTV) - Work to repair two washout areas near the train tracks on the Del Mar bluffs will lead to a partial rail closure this weekend, the North County Transit District said Wednesday. A project team was able to move up the repair timeline from January to Dec. 14-15, according to the NCTD. The washouts were first reported during a storm over the Thanksgiving holiday. All rail operations from the Solana Beach train station to Santa Fe Depot downtown will be halted and replaced with bus bridges for COASTER trains.
