BEIJING, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- China's civil affairs ministers visited survivors of last year's 7.1-magnitude Yushu earthquake and Zhouqu mudslide prior to China's lunar new year.Dou Yupei, vice minister of Civil Affairs, led a team to Yushu in northwest China's Qinghai Province to visit quake survivors and local cadres beginning on Sunday.Dou told Xinhua that quake survivors in Yushu now had access to food, clothing, safe drinking water, shelters and medical services, and the reconstruction of quake-damaged houses was well underway.Further, the ministry has distributed 45,000 cotton-padded tents to Yushu to house survivors during the extremely cold winter on the Qinghai-Tibet plateau.So far, 160,000 tents have been set up to assure that all survivors have a roof overhead, according to the ministry's statement issued Wednesday.Yushu was jolted by a 7.1-magnitude earthquake on April 14, leaving 2,200 people dead and 220,000 local residents affected.Another vice minister, Sun Shaocheng, visited survivors from a massive mudslide that left 1,700 people dead or missing in Zhouqu, Gansu province.To provide warm shelters to survivors, the Zhouqu county government invested three million yuan (455,000 U.S. Dollars) in renovating vacant school buildings or installing facilities in newly-built apartments.All survivors who previously had taken shelter in make-shift tents were relocated to these buildings before Oct. 13, according to the ministry's statement.

WINDHOEK, May 21 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo on Saturday met with Namibian President Hifikepunye Pohamba on advancing the bilateral cooperation to further develop the partnership with Namibia.Wu, chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, China's top legislative body, extended Chinese President Hu Jintao's greetings to Pohamba and hailed an "all- weather" partnership forged between the two nations.Namibia is one of the youngest states in Africa, which became fully independent in 1990.Wu reviewed the profound friendship between the two countries, which established diplomatic ties one day after Namibia's announcement of its full independence.Wu said the two countries have reaped good harvests in cooperation in the fields of politics, trade, culture, education, public health and culture in recent years, which has already set a model for countries engaged in the South-South cooperation.He also highlighted the mutual understanding and support on issues concerning each other's core interests, and to bring the bilateral economic and trade cooperation to a new high, Wu put forward a three-point proposal concerning the importation of the husbandry and aquatic products, resource and mining as well as the infrastructure construction.Namibia is a nation with significant influence in the southern Africa, Wu said, vowing that China will work with the Namibian side to push the bilateral partnership to a higher level.For his part, Pohamba welcomed Wu's visit, the first one ever paid by a Chinese top legislator, and spoke highly of China's long-standing support for Namibia's national liberation and construction.Namibia will develop the long-term and strategic cooperation in a much broader domain with China and welcomes more Chinese businesses to invest in the country, the Namibian president said.On the China-Afrcia relationship, the two leaders stressed that the two sides should work closer under the framework of the Forum of China-Africa Cooperation to boost political mutual trust, substantial and pragmatic cooperation on trade and humanitarian exchanges, especially those among the young generations, so as to further enrich a new China-Africa partnership.Namibia is the first leg of Wu's 12-day African-Asian tour. CANBERRA, April 14 (Xinhua) -- Scientists on Thursday expressed disappointment to the decision to cancel the long-running Australian Science Festival in Canberra.The festival has been operating during August for the past 19 years with free and ticketed science education activities.However, the festival organizers on Wednesday announced to halt this year's program after failing to secure support from the Australian Capital Territory state government in time to arrange events.According to Australian Science Communicators president, Jesse Shore, thousands of school children have attended the festival over its history to learn more about science as a career."It's encouraged other activities to join it, it was very important in getting National Science Week started, and that's stimulated a lot of other science communication activities," he told ABC News on Thursday.Shore said the decision to close it down is unfortunate as the event has been very influential and instrumental promoting science communications activities.He said he hopes that a number of people would gather together in a new partnership, with new ideas and hopefully a new funding base.
